July 28, 2013 - Update from Cousin Brenda White Jones:

The White Squirrel Cafe was jointly owned by Papa and Daddy (Gene).
Daddy worked the day shift and Papa worked the night shift. When Papa
died, Mama and his brothers and sisters gave Daddy Papa's part, of the cafe.
Several years later,  Dad sold the cafe to Bob Berry.

"Cafe Destroyed by Fire"

Story #1 - White Squirrel Cafe - by Mike White

My name is Mike, son of Benjamin White, who is the fourth child of Newt and Emma White.

The Cafe was owned by Relatives, Papa seemed to be the owner, as he seemed always there...
The Cafe was on old route 67, a popular stop for Train crews off the SSW Railroad (Cotton Belt),
now owned by Union Pacific RR, and cross country truck drivers and the locals.

In the late 1950's, in my youthful years, I visited Maud TX and the White Squirrel Cafe.
At this time the Cafe was still segregated with Whites on the one end and Black folks on
the other, separated by the kitchen. Papa told me once, "if he had it his way, everybody
would sit together".

A 'White Squirrel' was stuffed, and in a glass case, which hung on the wall behind the counter. As a
city boy, and hadn't ever seen a white squirrel, I thought it was a fake or dyed, ha ha.

After Papa passed away, July 5th 1964, the Cafe caught fire and burnt down, (date unknown).
When on leave from the Army in the late 1960's, my brother Perry and I  drove back
to visit Mama, on our way, we passed the Cafe and discovered only a concrete foundation was all
that remained, today only an vacant lot.

During other visits and trips to Maud and the Cafe, which was always fun, Papa always made sure we
performed a few chores for him, in exchange for a GREAT Burger or two...

I was from California, and always enjoyed traveling back to visit, we traveled with Uncle Thomas
and Aunt Jerry several times, have fond memories, of the trips. Families is what it's
all about. Sure the folks raised, in and around Maud could tell you some wild stories about the
"White Squirrel Cafe".  God bless them all...

P.S.
On a recent visit to Maud TX, I was told that the Cafe was across the street in the town portion for
some years before being bought and moved to where I'm standing now, buy a relative.

Story #2 - White Squirrel Cafe - Betty Paul Mabe
(Granddaughter of Charles & Elizbaeth, daughter of Dr Henry F * Willie Nell [White] Paul)
Story Provided by: Sister Janet Ward

 Told by Betty Paul Mabe:

The White Squirrel Cafe at Maud was located on US Hwy 67 where State Hwy 8 merged from the south. It was The Place to go in the 1940's and was the only place to meet other than Church, Mr. Chandler's Ice Cream Store or somebody's house. There was a large Wurlitzer junk box that played six records for a quarter. I remember big juicy hamburgers and coke in a bottle. There was a counter to sit at and several tables for gathering to eat. And, a Dance Floor!! (Betty forgot to tell that this is where she learned to jitterbug!)

The owners were Mr Huntzberger and Charles ?. Mr. Huntzberger was a middle aged man, slightly heavy, and very friendly. Charles was perhaps 40, taller a bit, and thin. He was a chain smoker, I remember, and rather David Nivenish in looks. Very debonair to our young teenage eyes. He never talked much but was always around.

Behind the cafe was a pretty garden, lighted, and we occasionally had a school banquet in the spring there. At one of them, a girl yelled across the tables to one of our teachers, 'get that fork out of your hair"! We got a huge lecture on Monday about manners!

I'm not sure when Mr H. & Charles left. I do know they went to Daingerfield and ran the food court at Daingerfield State Park.  Maud School had a party, at the park, in the spring and we would see them there.

I'm also not sure just when Gene and Uncle Newt began operating the White Squirrel. I do know that the colored cook sent word to Gran and Uncle Gus to send the chittenlings to the kitchen when they butchered hogs. An so they did, but they didn't clean them correctly; and the cook told Uncle Newt to tell "Mr. Gus and Mr. Charlie to not clean the next ones, but bring them and he (the cook) would do the cleaning." end, I would e-mail you a copy of this, but, I don't think you can read it.

My memories are not as clear as Betty's. I do remember the cafe, the white squirrel in the glass case, and the hamburgers. I also remember going to town with Granddad, getting an ice cream, and sitting on the benches outside the stores while he talked to others. I thought I was so big. This would have been in the 50's.

It is so much fun and interesting to have Betty tell me things that she remembers. She had the advantage of being 15 yrs older than I and being able to spend time with the relatives. She remembers great grandfolks that I never knew. She has promised to write down more of her stories. I hope she does.

Notes by Mike White: The Charles and Gus mentioned above
may have been the brothers of Newton J "Newt" White, sons
of Thomas & Marthia White of Maud TX - Charles & Gus
were merchants by trade in Maud. Gene was the son of Newt his
name Durward Eugene "Gene" White. The original owner was a
T. A. Huntzberger, who named the cafe after a white squirrel
he had captured himself, talk of the town, in the 1930's, as
white squirrels were a rarity, he had a Zoo at his home with
30 animals, was mentioned in two newspaper articles of the region.

A Serious discussion about the
"White Squirrel of Maud"

From an Online Posting:
(Thought this was funny..)

"...there was a haberdashery in Maud that was named WHITE SQUIRREL CAFE.
Upon the wall behind the long lunch counter was a white squirrel that a taxidermist
had mounted in a glass container. The squirrel was either an albino or the result of
a creative taxidermist..."

Mike says: "boy! these none believers...
"

The White Squirrel Lives On!  :o)

Final comment:
Mr. T. A. Huntzberger would 'turn-over-in-his-grave' if he read this online posting... :o)
