The Death of Theodosia Ruddell

Obiturary Theodosia Ruddell

Published in Arkansas Gazzett, "Oct 6, 1830,
|page 3, Column 1:

[Communicated]

" Departed this life in the 69 years of her age,
at her residence in Independence County, on the
20th day of September 1830, after a protracted
and painful illness of several months, Mrs.
Theodosia Ruddell, consort of George Ruddell
Esq. In this estimable lady were combined the
qualities of a kind and dutiful wife, obliging
neighbor, and affectionate mother. Mrs. Ruddell
was a native of Pennsylvania, and was one
among first settlers of Kentucky (after Col.
Boone). She was taken prisoner at the siege of
Ruddell's Station, by the British and Indians, in
1779, and continued with them about two years,
in upper Canada, undergoing many privatiions
difficulties without a murmur. She received a
slight wound during the above siege, while engaged
in preparing balls for her husband and others, but
this did not deter her from the ardous task which
she had undertaken. Her noble example stimulated
others, at the 'time that tried men's souls.' "

Little Prairie - Pemiscot (Pemiscon) Bayou

" Captain George Ruddle, an inhaditant of Little Prairie,
who served in the militia as Lieutenant and Captain, both
before and after the purchase of Louisiana, in 1796 opened
a farm on this bayou.
His family, when he settled in the
Spanish possessions, consisted of a wife and six children.
He was a slave owner, and a man of substance.  Crondelet
made a grant of land directly to him.

Abraham Ruddle also settled on Pemiscot bayou, (then called
Pemiscon).

They were both sons of Isaac Ruddle, of Ruddle's Station, KY.
When Ruddle's Station was captured by the Indians and the
English under Col Bird, the family of Isaac Ruddle was taken
to Ohio and divided among the Indians.  Then Abraham and
Stephen, then young boys, came to be assigned to the Shawnees
and were taken to Piqua where they were adopted and raised by
the Indians.  As boys they were playmates of Tecumseh. "

----------------------
Note from Mike:

This certification would have been after their release from the British,
note worthy, " Issued Rifles ", would imply, they were in a Militia and
this during the Revolutionary War, which in turn in my eyes at least
makes George Ruddell a Veteran of this War.

George's wife's obituary confirms that the George Ruddell and wife
were taken captive by the British, also Theodocia's father mentions
her captivity in his Will...

If a person could be considered a Vet by suppling a Militia with food,
and being paid, I would think being issued a rifle in George C Rogers
Illinois Regiment would be proof of service in the Rev War.... this is
my personal opinon, I have no current knowledge of any existing papers
or vouchers for George, but this is an important fact
we should remember, in his honor.

    GEORGE RUDDELL APPOINTED JUSTICE
BY GOV. WILLIAM CLARK - MO TERRITORY
    Lawrence County MO
    'Strawberry Settlement' - 1815

    ...On January 5, 1815, the legislature of the Territory of Missouri passed the act creating Lawrence county from the southern part of New Madrid county In that territory. For the next four years it was Lawrence county in Missouri Territory. During that time it was under the jurisdiction of Governor William Clark of Missouri Territory, and his first action pertaining to the government of the county was the appointment, in January,1815, of two justices of the peace for each of the four settlements of the county. The justices appointed were as follows: Richard Murphy and Perry G. Magness for the Settlement of Spring River; William Russell and William Harris for the Settlement of Fourche de Thomas;
    George West and
George Ruddell for the Settlement of Strawberry and John C. Lutteg and James F. Moore for the Settlement of White River. After these appointments, justices were appointed for townships instead of settlements. The number had increased to nine in 1819.

On March 3, 1819, Congress passed, and President Monroe signed, the Act that created the Territory of Arkansas out of the southern part of Missouri Territory, and Lawrence county thereby became Lawrence county, Arkansas Territory, instead of Missouri Territory, as it had been for four years. This event is the ending of the first period of Lawrence county history and the beginning of the second, and it is the end of this narrative.

    Obituary of Abraham Ruddell
    (Brother of George Ruddell)

    OBITUARIES

    Written By C. F. M. Moland

    ABRAHAM RUDDELL

Died - At his residence in this county on the 25th ultimo, ABRAHAM RUDDELL,
    Sen'r

The life of this extraordinary man, is one of thrilling interest, and the pen of
Byrd, Kennedy or Hoffman, could have found in it, incidents enough for a heart
Stirring volume. Mr. Ruddell was born on the Holstein River in the state of Virginia
On the third day of August, 1774, and emigrated with his father to Kentucky in
1777. On the 22nd of June 1780 he was taken prisoner by the Indians; at the taking
(by them) of Ruddell's Station. He was adopted into the family of Tecumseh, and
Perhaps no man living knew so well the character of that distinguished red warrior.
He described him as a brave skilful warrior, of the "prophet" he had a contemptible
Opinion, and believed that Tecumseh only gave credence to his prophecies, the
Better to carry out with his people the plans of his mighty genius. After Wayne's
Treaty with the Indians in 1794, (Ruddell) returned to the whites. While among the
Indians he acquired a character for great boldness and in their skirmishes with the
Delaware's, he was always a leader. He was one of that gallant band who were
Defeated under Winchester in 1811 at the river Raisin, and belonged to that wing of
the army which suffered so much. Tecumseh was absent at this battle, being on a
Mission to other tribes. Once while heading a scouting party, Mr. Ruddell crossed
the trail of Tecumseh, - could they have met and a recognition have taken place
Before blows, there would have been in all probability a scene of deep interest, -
The ties of friendship produced by so long an association and the confidence of the
Indian Chief in him might perchance have checked the former in his deed laid
Plans of vengeance against the white men. - But they never met.

In 1816 he removed to this county, where he has ever since resided - respected
And beloved by all who knew him. His wife, and but one son and daughter out of a
Large family of children survives him. His habits were such, as might be expected
From his early life. He was passionately fond of hunting - in the woods he was at
Home. His skill ever make him comfortable, and where night overtook him he
Went to rest, with nothing but the blue sky of heaven above him, as contented as the
Proudest potentate of Europe does to his bed of down. Go in the woods with him -
Mark his elastic step and caution tread, and you had before you a living breathing
Likeness of Cooper's leather stocking. He had held communion with nature in the
Depths of the wilderness - had watched the stars - and studied the mighty and
Stupendous works of providence, until he had acquired a knowledge of books. The
Habits of beasts and insects - from the majestic Buffalo to the busy Bee were as
Familiar to him as those of Durham cattle to the scientific grazier. But he has been
Gathered to the tomb, ripe in years and ripe in goodness.

:Peace be unto his ashes." (From the Batesville News, March 4, 1841, p. 2.)

An article entitled "Early Days of Historic Ruddell Family" by Pearl Ruddell
Rieves, published in the Chronicle." Vol. 1 No. 1 (October 1959, 20-27, contains
