Below is a story replayed many times: War comes, parents die, mother die's young, grandmother
takes over primary guardian, in this case, Grandmother die's the children are assigned guardians
in different counties in Texas.  When we send a parent to War, and something like this happens
look at the consequences generations later, lives that could have been much different, however,
don't ask the children of their's, has they are here, as I am, because of the events of history, but
life's events shape who we are, it is up to each of us to overcome the negatives in these events,
it is not pre-ordained that we live in poverty, remain down-and-out, these are events each of us
can overcome in a free country, & lead rewarding lives, of happiness & love or contentment

Jefferson was assigned a Guardian
after 1870 when his Grandmother died

I am still trying to locate him

Note:  Thomas C Bobo, on naming his Children: You can see his father and mother, his name, all of his Siblings, as first or middle names
It appears also, these names are of Jeremiah Bobo's family, Mary Jane Bobo's, his 1st cousin's father's family, Wm, Lewis, Mary, Ann.
You can tell they were very careful or mindful in their naming convention, making sure those special in their lives, were remembered.

Timeline of Family Events:

Theory Begins here:  The Case for Lewis Bobo... is he ours?

Updated: 10/25/2003
1.  This may not be our Lewis after 1850...
2.  1846 - Sep 19th: S Gibbs is ask to WRITE to Louis Bobo, about letter
of dimission, this indicates Lewis is not living in Union at this time...
3.  1846 - Dec 19th - the Church grants a letter to Lewis Bobo... (Padgetts's).
4.  1846/47?: I believe Lewis Bobo was on the 2nd wagon Train with Elias White,
that arrived in Bowie Co TX, in 1847, though it is possible he was on the 1st,
the above letter would have taken more than a month to go to Bowie Co TX?
and back to SC, in 1846, for such a remote unsettled location...
5.  1846 - Lewis Bobo is on the Bowie Co Poll Tax List. (1st Wagon train?)
6.  1850 Lafayette Co AR Census, Lewis, 25yrs old, living with Sarah Nix, in the
Rea River Community.  Sarah widow of John Nix, decd, from Union Co SC.

Sarah arrived on the 1st wagon train with Ben White, in the Texarkana TX area.
7.  My Guess is that Lewis left AR after 1850 & moved to Houston Co TX,
which was the original destination of the Ben White Wagon train that arrived in 1846.
8.  1850 Hou Co TX census indicates Lewis's future wife's (Ann) family, already there...
Lewis's Wife: is listed as Marey A Anderson (18), she is living with her mother
Marey A, and a Sister Jane, in the Household of Thomas Cartwright, whose
     daughter is Marey A Cartwright (1yr) ...
9a.1853 - Lewis on last Poll Tax of Bowie Co TX.
9.  1853/54 - Marriage Year: from the birth of 1st child Elizabeth abt 1855/56, would
estimate abt 1853/54, as the marriage year of this Lewis & Ann Bobo. From the
1850 Hou Co Census, we know Lewis & Ann, would have married in Hou Co TX.
10.1860 - The Age of Lewis in 1850 (25) matches with the L Bobo in 1860 (35) Hou Co
TX, we know from descendants of L Bobo, that in fact, he was also a Lewis Bobo.
11.1860 - L N Bobo, on 1860 Texas Agricultural Census.
12. Descendants claim the oldest son of this Lewis was, Thomas Cartwright Bobo,
apparently named after the 1850 census Thomas Cartwright, connection unknown.
13. Children of Lewis & Ann: Elizabeth, Thomas, Jefferson, Jenny, & Robert.
14. Thomas C Bobo, oldest son of Lewis & Marey: Descendants say he was born
15 Jun 1859 TX, this age matches with the 1860 Houston Co TX census, 1yr old.
15. 1870 - M M Anderson (72), head of household for all of Lewis Bobo's children,
Lewis & Ann have both died. M M is probably Marey A Anderson from the 1850
Hou Co Census, mother of Lewis's wife Ann.
16. 1880 - M M Anderson has passed away, children are probably assigned guardians.
      (Not confirmed at this time)
17. 1880 - Jenny 16, is a Servant in house of Marshal D Knox, Ellis Co TX.
18. 1880 - Jefferson 18, Boarder/Laborer, house of Anon Roberts, Hill Co TX.
19. 1880 - Have not found Elizabeth 28, Thomas 22, or Robert 15. We know from
descendants that Jenny married a McDaniel, lived her final years (wd)
with her brother Thomas & wife, Jenny said to be buried at Hico Cemetery.
20. 1903 - Laura Jane Bobo, 1st cousin to Thomas C Bobo, dau of Jeremiah Bobo, Lewis's
brother, died 29 Sep 1903 and is buried at Pottsville Cem Hamilton Hamilton Co TX.
To me this offers a some confirmation the "Uncle Lewis, is our Lewis of Houston Co TX.
21. 1937 -  Jenny [Bobo] McDaniel buried Hico Cemetery Hamilton Co TX.
22. 1925 - Thomas C Bobo dies, 25 Jan 1925 Hico Hamilton Co TX.
23. The fate of Elizabeth, Jefferson and Robert is currently unknown.
24. Note: Thomas had 8 children, one known to this writer, Annie, had 12 children.

**Notes from Mike White:

I have not found another Lewis Bobo (or L Bobo) from South Carolina that would have
been 25 years old in 1850, in all of Texas, 1850/1860.

               Lewis arrived on.

**Note:  If my assumption is correct and L. Bobo was
actually Lewis, then on the 1870, it appears he is
deceased, and wife Ann is also deceased, as there
is a M. M. Anderson 72 female born SC as head
of household of the Bobo Children. L. Bobo may
have died in the Civil War, Ann after 1865, as the
last children in 1870 is 5 years old.

I have not been able to locate Thomas or Robert Bobo
listed in the 1870 with Jency and Jef.  It is obvious that
the 72 year old lady in 1870, M M Anderson passed away
and the young children were probably dispersed by a judge
in Houston Co TX.  I believe a look at the 1870/80 Court
minutes and Poll tax records of Houston Co (are available),
will reveal the children were assigned to guardians.

Note: This census taker couldn't write, wrote so small you cannot read
the writing, but Elizabeth and dau Mary are ok, I cannot figure
out the McDaniel's, Jennie Bobo married a McDaniel, but she didn't
die until 1936 ... must be on Elizabeth's side of the family?

Also, note this, the Sarah J McDaniel is a 65 years old female
         Elizabeth Bobo is 69.

Now, with that said, to confuse matters more, look at the ages
of these children, I guarantee they are not this 65 year's children?
but the census taker ditto'd everything under McDaniel... so, is she
the Grandmother of these McDaniel children and the parents died?

This is the Same situation that happened to Lewis Bobo's children
raised as orphans after both parents and the grandparents died.

I cannot say a brother because she (Elizabeth) is a Jordon, however,
if maybe she was originally a McDaniel, and not a Jordon, she was
23 when she married Thomas C Bobo, no other children from another
marriage were with her, so, they married young in those days, she may
have had a prior marriage, and could be a McDaniel. And the 65 year
old Sarah the in law... or wife of her brother.

The 1940 Census comes out next year, Elizabeth died in Oct 1940 so we
should find her in that census.  1930 the Great depression, and Elizabeth
has a house full of ladies, and young boys.  No one in the household is
listed as working.  If they were not well off enough to survive hard times,
we may find, as many of my other families had to do, move to fine work,
1940 census should be interesting. Elizabeth is to be 79, and most likely in
the care of family.

the unit was heavily engaged in various battles, it is my belief a deeper look into the
prevailing Civil War records of this unit will reveal that Lewis Bobo may have died
as a result of battle or wounds, sometime between 1863/1864, as his last child was
born in 1865, Robert Bobo.

Afterwards, it was placed in General Horace Randal's, 2nd Brigade, Walker's Division. On November 12, 1864, Major Gould was promoted Lieutenant Colonel and Captain William Viser was promoted to Major. Major Brannan died in October of 1866 from wounds suffered at Battle of Mansfield. and is buried in the Viser Cemetery in Midway, Madison County, Texas. Gould's Battalion: Sketch of Its History by a Member
From the Houston County Courier Vol.2 Number 25, July 24, 1891

Gould's Battalion which meets in Crockett , July 22 and 23 was organized and mustered into the Confederate service in May 1862 at Porter Springs, Houston County, Texas, and consisted of five companies as follows:

Company A, Captain Tullis, of Trinity County

Company B, Captain Viser, of Madison County

Company C, Captain James McLean of Houston County

Company D, Captain W. D. Wood of Leon County

Company E., Captain J. T. Heflin of Houston County

The rank and file numbered about 525 men. R.S. Gould of Leon County was elected Major of the Battalion. This Battalion was first attached to the 13th (Burnett's) Texas Cavalry, but remained with it only a short time when it was withdrawn and became an independent organization. Afterwards, it was placed in Randal's Brigade, Walker's Division, where it remained during the rest of the war.

The service of this command was in the Trans-Mississippi Department and extended from the Northern part of Arkansas to Berwick Bay, Louisiana. It was engaged in the following battles, meeting and opposing Banks army in his march from Atchafalaya to Mansfield.

The first general battle in which it was engaged was the battle of Mansfield, Louisiana, which was followed closely by the battle of Pleasant Hill where Bank's army was routed and retreated to their transports at Atchafalaya.

Walkers's Division, of which this battalion was a part, was then ordered on a forced march to meet Steele's army then advancing on Shreveport from Little Rock, Arkansas. Steele having heard of Bank's defeat began a retreat towards Little Rock and was overtaken by Walker's division at Jenkin's Ferry on Sabine River where they engaged in battle under unfavorable circumstances, resulting in the loss of many men. Steele succeeded in crossing the river with his army in a demoralized condition and continued his retreat to Little Rock.

Walker's Division was then ordered back to Alexandria on the Red River after a hard campaign of several weeks' duration marching and fighting, the men being very exhausted. This division was in many small battles including "Nigger Hill," Poison Springs, and others not remembered, and was marched during hard weather to the relief of Arkansas Post, arriving just too late to render assistance.

This Battalion suffered untold hardships, living in swamps winter and summer. Their number was greatly depleted by sickness and diseases incident to camp life.

At their reunion there will be perhaps not more than one hundred of the original members present.

Of the original commissioned officers, only Gould, Viser, Wood, Nixon, and Heflin are living. We understand that this Battalion will probably have their reunion next year in joyous greeting wherever they may meet. We should be delighted to chronicle their harrowing experiences if space permitted. May all our good people join in honoring these old defenders of our liberties!
