 Caswell County, NC - Tax List - 1780-1788 - C.R.020.701.1

Updated: Mar 25, 2018

Tax Records compiled by:
Ann Hilke, Jeanie Russell, Mike White
Source: NC Archives at Raleigh

Note: 03/05/2018 - Per Researcher at NC Archives (that I hired)

"There are NO RECORDED DEEDS for Robert White on Hogan's Creek or elsewhere in Caswell Co NC, WHY?
Often, land was GIVEN, as a gift or inheritance, sometimes it was recorded and many times it was not, but they still had to pay taxes on their acreage/land."

Mike here: A possible Theory, William Whitehead gave the land to his son-in-law, Robert White, after he returned from the War in 1781?
I am guessing that maybe Robert White gave the land back to Wm Whitehead, when he moved to South Carolina, in 1787/88? as there
is no record of sale for Robert's 342 acres of land on Hogan's Creek, we need to take a closer look at Wm Whitehead Hogan's lands...
Could have been inherited land, could had been unused land that a person homesteaded, without recording a purchase or sell?

,
but they are in the same District

Tax Index for 1784-1786

The tax books on the market today, for sale in NC, show selected years only, as we can see from our
work above, Wm Whitehead and Robert White are both listed for more years than the books suggest,
the lesson here is if you need further years, checking the originals at the NC archives is the only way. Also,
the book doesn't give the District in Caswell, that our folks are living in,"Caswell District of Caswell Co NC.
This is important, as some Tax years show the land or acreage owned by our ancestors, other years do not...

Below Tax Index for Robert White and William Whitehead of Caswell Co NC - 1784-1786
