About the Picture, allegedly,
Robt Sr., and Wife:

[I am in agreement that this photo
is Robt Jr and 2nd wife Susan, Jr's
features are like his brother Elias]

By Cousin Donald Clark
Dear Mike,

On the photo of Robert White. It has to be Robert White, Jr. and his wife, Polly. Back in 1978 I went to Padgett's Creek Baptist Church. I got a copy of the church history book from Claude Sparks, who wrote the book. The photo of Robert White and his wife is in this book. I ask Mr. Sparks what kind of photo it was. He said it was a tintype. Which was invented in 1856. So it couldn't be Robert, Sr. Also Robert is wearing the same type of clothing that B.F.White was wearing in his photo, a tintype taken in the 1870's.

On photography. The Daguerreotype was invented in 1839 in France. It got to the U.S. in late 1839 in New York. This type of photography couldn't have gotten to backwoods South Carolina before Elizabeth White died. Also the exposure times were in minutes in 1840. The elderly probably couldn't stay still that long. Wet-plate (wet-collodion) photography was invented in 1850. The Ambrotype, an adaptation of the wet-plate process, was invented in 1852. The Tintype (ferrotype), an adaptation on the ambrotype, was invented in 1856.

I got interested in photographic history when I first started genealogy and a cousin said she had a photo of a Clarke ancestor who died five years before photography was invented. That is when my B.F.A. degree, a year of photo classes and four years of art history kicked in.  I talked to Ken Thomas last night. He hasn't found out about Mary Coppage yet. He thinks she is still living.
I hope you are doing fine.

Don Clarke

<<< Photo is allegedly to be Robert White Sr and 2nd wife Elizabeth.
It is also, more possible this is a photo of Robert Jr., and his 2nd wife Susan Norman White.

These wet plate type camera's were, introduced in America in late
1838, definitely by 1839. was produced by the French in 1838.

The 1839 introduction is important, because Robert Sr's 2nd wife
Elizabeth died Dec 27, 1840.

This picture of Robert Jr/Sr? is similar to his son, Elias White's, Jaw
structure & nose, mouth, and chin.

The clothing style worn in this photo, may someday help to date the
photo, I am not expert enough to make that determination.

May 13, 1875, Page 3:

Our esteemed fellow-citizen, T. Warren White, stopped a few
minutes to chat with us, on Monday last. He informed us that he had
just received a letter from his father, who lives near Spartanburg,
S. C
., and who is now beyond his ninety-first year. The late cyclone
in that section of country struck the old gentleman's place and did
considerable damage. It blew down two very large trees upon his house,
crushing and destroying it.

His barn was completely demolished, his carriage and buggy were broken
so as to be useless. The old gentleman says he cannot work as well as he
could some thirty years ago, and feels the loss of the property ruined by
the wind. When he was ninety-one years old he laid the worm of a rail fence
some several hundred yards long.

Mr. White's grandfather was also a vigorous veteran. He was a blacksmith,
and on his 100th birthday took a pick in his hand, walked a mile to a shop
and worked a piece of steel on its point. He returned home (on foot) with
the pick, and throwing it upon the groundremarked "there, who of you can
do that when you are a century old?" We doubt if there are many as vigorous
old gentlemen.

  Athens University Archives, Athens GA.

Notes from Mike White:

Of course the article is a gold mine, from a researchers point of view I see the following:

1. It confirms that Robert Jr and Sr are who we think they are...
2. This Warren of Bartow Co GA is definitely part of our family (with other evidence)
3. Confirms their home residence of Spartanburg.
4. It offers additional support that Robert White Sr was a VETERAN  'of the Revolutionary War'.
5. Confirms his trade as a Blacksmith.
6. Confirms he was still physically and mentally together at 100 years old.
7. It hints that Robert White Sr. may have been living in Spartanburg at least at 100 (1843), but was said to
have died on a journey to Union Co SC, where his two daughters, Elizabeth and Susan still lived,
and son Elias, who left for Texas in 1845.  Not to mention the many Grand and Great Grand children.
I suspect but cannot prove that Robert Sr was living with Robert Jr., for a time, we have never found them
on the 1840 census, which would have answered that question...  Sr died 1843.

Fall Line Road - Primary Trade & Migration Trail Prior to 1750
Road ran through Hanover Co VA, and Old and current Brunswick Co VA
Robert White's parents most likely used this trail to old Brunswick,
Roanoke River ran through Mecklenburg Co E. & the western part
old and new Brunswick Co VA of today. Other trails west of this
trail were to dangerous to travel with family because of Indians.
The French Indian War 1753-1763 pushed the mirgration
toward the coast, until wars end.

Edited Map of Old Granville County NC

Granville County NC - marked to show
Country Line District with a Robert White
Robert, N. West against old Caswell Co NC pre-1791

marked Goshen District with a William Whitehead
William, near TAR river against old Caswell Co NC pre1791

The Two Above mentioned Districts existed in 1778 - during Oath of Allegiance

Notes: This theory seems logical because Robert married Wm's daughter Milly about 1775,...................
from Granville evidence the only William Whitehead in the county is listed from 1769 to 1771..................
Wm Whitehead on Militia List 1771, in 1778 he leaves Granville moves to Moon's crk in Cas-.,,...................
well County NC, just west of Granville. This is the only piece of information I've seen that places Robert......
well near the our Whitehead family, in the time frame of Robt's marriage to Milly, and near the Tar River, and
just south of Halifax & Mecklenburg Co VA, where a Robert White joins 6th VA Regt 1776. Remember Soldiers
from the 6th VA were recruited from bordering counties of Mecklenburg Co VA, which included Granville NC....
Robt White of the 6th VA was on Furlough in May when Oath of Allegiance was taken in Granville May of 1778.
We can prove William Whitehead lived in Granville Co then Caswell then Laurens County SC via Documentations.

Some Research in Progress below

Why do I/We think this Robert White of Caswell County NC is our Robert?

In 1788 when Robert arrived in Union Co SC, the whole area was called 96th District SC.
When old 96th was split up, Robert ended up in Union District, his father in law in Laurens Co,
others in Newberry Co, etc, all boarding each other. In 1814 Robert sold his land along Cane Creek in Laurens Co.

Click the highlighted Links below to view the evidence in detail - Use BACK ARROW to Return Here

1.  Isaac Murphy Letter of 1871
"Grandfather was born near the Roanoke River VA and lived a time along the Tar River NC"
Both the Roanoke and Tar touched and ran through Old Caswell Co (prior to 1791), when
Person Co was created from Caswell, a Robert White and William Whitehead were there until 1788.

2.  William Whitehead, father-in-law to Robert White Sr, in his Will names his oldest child daughter, Milly
as "Milla White".  He lives in Laurens Co SC, on Cane Crk, our Robt had land on Cane Crk also, sold 1814.
Laurens and Union were Old 96th Dist where Robert arrived in 1788.  The counties of Laurens
and Union are next to each other, in Union's southern west corner, 1825 map of Union shows an area called
     "White"
this is after our White's who lived in this area, and most of the families. we married into are there...
Have not found a land purchase by Robt in Laurens, could be land Milly inherited from her father?
As Milly White died in 1807, Wm Whitehead her dad, in 1805, Robert would have to dispose of the land.
On This 1814 Deed sale, Wm White, son of  Robert Sr, and son-in-law, Lewis Rhodes were witnesses.
The sale was to Charter Nichols (Nickles), he was the Estate Administrator to Wm Whitehead's Estate,
William Whitehead 2nd married to Margaret (Marey) Nichols, in Laurens Co, may have been related to Charter?

3.  William Whitehead can clearly be tracked from Granville, to Caswell, to Laurens Co in 1788,
via Deeds and court and tax records, census.

4.   1778 - A Robert White is living near Wm Whitehead in Granville Co NC, Wm near Tar River NC.
Wm Whitehead appears to have been in Granville 1769-1778, near the Tar River, if this is
true, then our Robert White Sr may have married Milly about 1775 at her fathers home in
Granville and near the Tar River (per Isaac's letter, 'Robt lived a time on the Tar River'.
If the Robert White, just north, turns out to be ours, I would believe, they married at Fathers,
some of Robert's children then where born in Granville Co NC... will update in the future.
(remember we have proven Wm Whitehead lived in Granville until 1778, then Caswell NC, Laurens SC,
also Robert was at War for 6 years, so meets up with Wm on Hogan's Creek Caswell Co 1781?)

4.  1779 - Will of John Dennis Sr leaves Blacksmith tools to son John Jr, 'now being cared for by Robert White, now in the Carolina's (NC).
John Dennis Jr, also moved to Caswell Co NC, I suspect this is a connection to our Robert White. John Dennis Sr lived in Halifax Co VA
in 1779, just across the from Caswell Co NC border with VA.  John Sr was a master blacksmith and gunsmith, Robert White Sr may have
been, at one time, indentured to John Sr., and was given the Blacksmith tools mentioned in the Will, to help start his own business,
it took 7 to 8 yrs to become and blacksmith, and 4 years as a journeyman before you could setup shop. Parents usually indentured
their sons at 8 or 10 years old to a master blacksmith to learn the trade.  John Dennis made his Will 1779, I would suspect, he was
an old man and retired in 1779.  It appears our Robt White served as a blacksmith (waggoner) in the Revolution, for six 6 years.

5.  Robert White of Caswell, was on the Tax records there from 1781 to 1787,  Wm Whitehead 1780-1788.

6.  1786 NC Census - was taken between 1784-1787, Caswell Co NC was turned in 1786. Listed on the
census is Robert White and two households from his father-in-law, Wm Whitehead, on Hogan's Creek.

7.  Robert White is witness on Wm Whitehead deed formerly of Caswell Co. However, the Deed transaction was 1791
but Ref Wm Whitehead now of Lawrence Co SC (they meant Laurens), with Wm Morgan and Robt White wit.
so Robert is already in SC as is Wm Whitehead, Wm still had land holdings in Caswell, after he moved to Laurens.
**important to note here that Old Caswell was up against Granville, before Person Co was formed from Caswell.
**Note Wm Morgan - there was another Wm Morgan in Laurens arrived after ours, ours also moved to Union Co.
he was also living a few households from Wm Whitehead & Robert White, on the 1786 NC Census.

8.  Other Caswell Families migrated to Laurens Co SC, some probably with our group, such as Hudson Berry
Family. If you wanted to stay alive in those days, you did 'not' venture into the wilderness alone with your family...

9.  Some of the Families of Caswell, also had lived in Hanover Co VA, just a note here, I tested my DNA and
we connect to many other surnames in Hanover VA seems to be the common denominator....Future study!

10.  I am finding that other families of Union Co SC had also come this same path... Murphy's, Jacksons, Gibson,
Browning's, and others, families our White's married into, in Union Co SC.

This mainly, circumstantial evidence, has lead me to formulate the THEORY of Robert White of Caswell being ours...

DNA - we need many more White's on our lineage and other branches to test, thus far, I must be the only
White of Robert White Sr to have tested.   I matched with other White's, that are stuck on their research
as I am, and we cannot make that connection, I feel, they may be from a sibling of Robert's etc.
DNA - Many other Surnames match with our DNA, raising many questions, hopefully, that can be answered in
my lifetime, but the New Genetic Genealogy is just getting started and hopefully will help us in the future.

A Marriage before Mildred?   -   A Case is made!

This has to be mentioned here... in 1776, Robt Sr., is 33 years old, that may be an age a male
would marry today, but not in 1700's.  It is possible, and highly likely, that our Robt. had a marriage
prior to 1775, or prior to marrying Milly and further, there may have been children from that marriage.
Lets speculate, that he married about 1763 or 1764, had several children, say 3 between 1764 and 1775,
likely more, those children would be 09, 11, 13 by 1775, by the time Robert moved to SC in 1788, all three
would be of age to marry and live on their own.  They may have chosen to stay in North Carolina,
some may have migrated west from NC, or lived among the many 'other' White's of Union County SC.
Still others may have died young or died during the Revolutionary War. There was a Moses White and
wife in attendance at the Padgett's Creek Baptist, in the 1790's, and other unknown White's close to our
Robert. For those familiar with  the Isaac P Murphy Letters, might ask, why didn't Isaac mention this... ?
Well, Isaac wasn't born until 1797, and may not have remembered or ever known they existed, further
Isaac was in his late 80's when he wrote his letter about his grandfathers family.  However, if you
consider 7 or 8 years indentured or apprenticed to learn the Blacksmith trade, and at least 4 years
time spent as a Blacksmith Journeyman before setting up his own shop, or partnering, then marrying at
33yrs could be reasonable. He was married by 1775, and during the Revolutionary War.

Milly born 1745 ! - A factual discussion...

I do NOT believe MILDRED WHITEHEAD WHITE was born in 1745, otherwise it is to say,
she had her last child at 55 years old, not to many women even lived this long in the 1700's, and
as others believe, she had passed her child bearing years, though it is possible. NOW, the
1800
Census shows Milly between 26 - 45
years old, say we take 45yrs as her age in 1800, well that makes
her at least 10 years younger. Whitehead researchers say she was born about 1763, Milly was the
oldest child, the next child, Lousia was born about 1765, both mentioned in their fathers Will.
Most of the White's as well as most other men married woman much younger than themselves, in the
1700/1800's.  Women of the time often fudged on their ages for obvious & various reasons.   My
personal belief is Milly was born in the early 1760's,  and was the daughter of William Whitehead Sr.,
who died in Laurens Co SC 1805, mentions 'Milla White' in his Will. The known 2nd marriage of Robt Sr
to Elizabeth bears out the tradition of marrying much younger women, Elizabeth was born between
1760/1770, again a women at about 20 years his youth. At the Padgett's Creek Baptist Church in
Union Co SC, a picture hangs, allegedly, Robt Sr and 2nd Wife, though it may be Robt Jr and his
2nd wife Susan, anyway, this lady is obviously 'very' much younger than Robt Sr.

Note:  Milly's father William Whitehead lived in Granville Co NC, Goshen District at least from 1769? to 1778,
Near the TAR River that went through that part of Granville.  There is also a Robert White just north
of Wm Whitehead in County (Country) Line District 1778
(upper left against old Caswell Co NC (pre-1791),
and Halifax  and Mecklenburg Co's VA (Roanoke River thru Mecklenburg) just across the border on the VA side.)
Both Robert White and Wm Whitehead were living up against old Caswell Co NC, Wm Whitehead moved
to Caswell 1778, Robert may have been in the War at that time, and joined them in 1781 on Hogon's Creek
Caswell Co NC, where he is recorded with 342 acres.  Robert is 2 farms from Wm Whitehead, on Hogan's Creek
Per Isaac Murphy letter 1871, ..."Grandfather (Robt White) was born near Roanoke River VA and lived a time
on the TAR River NC. This makes it possible that Robert White Sr married Milly at her fathers place or church
in that area, at or about 1775, in Granville Co NC? Robt may have been living with Wm Whitehead or Milly and
the children were with her father while Robert was in service from 1775 to 1781. Might also add, that Wm
Whitehead now of Caswell Co NC, was growing corn and is recorded providing provisions for the War effort.

Comments from Cousin Donald Clarke a descendant of BF White:

On Robert White's marrage, he came of age at the end of the French and Indian War so he could have been off to war & didn't marry until after it. Also he had a skilled trade, blacksmithing. Unless his father was also a blacksmith, Robert would have been apprenticed or indentured to learn his trade. His contract may have not let him marry until he finished his training. Third he may have been married to Millie and their first children died young or were miscarriages or stillbirths and buried in Virginia or North Carolina and the children born later didn't know about them. The children are the ones that put the information in the Bibles.

THE HUNT FOR ROBERT WHITE SR'S 2nd known wife, ELIZABETH, Unknown last name

This is a work in progress since, 2011.

1st Wife Mildred (Milly) White died 1807!

2nd Wife Elizabeth ???? Married Robert by 1810 (via census)

A list of All "ELIZABETH's (Betsey's)" Recorded at Padgett's Creek Baptist Church 1788-1833

First: Padgett's Crk Church was the Mother Church to others, Lower Fairforest, Tinker, Bridge and others,
they recorded the minutes of these other 'Arms' of the Padgett's until they became independant or closed.
Minutes were recorded from 1787 to 1900's and current I believe. In the early days if a new member wanted
in, from any of the other Arms of the Padgett's, Padgett's recorded that event for the other churches, but many
times did not reference the other churches names... sometimes, rarely, they did.

Second:  Lower Fairforest began recording its own minutes in 1809, that is why some members are never recorded
there as "Being Received", they were already there, when they started recording their own minutes.

Robert White Sr. - is Charter member #1 at the Lower Fairforest.  They did record he and Elizabeth's departure in 1829.
I looked at the minutes only for the Period of interest, from 1803, as Robt's 1st wife Mildred (Milly) died in 1807, and we
estimate that Robert Sr married again by 1810, per the Census, so I checked a bit before and after...

============================================
LIST OF "Elizabeth's" - LOWER FAIRFOREST BAPTIST;

White, Elizabeth    May 12, 1812 Received by Letter.   (Could this be the Elizabeth Howard from 1808 above? the 2nd wife of Robt White Sr???)
We need to check 1800 census for a Elizabeth Howard, SINGLE/Widowed, might be in her 40's
Our Robert White Sr was already charter member #1 at The Lower Fairforest 1809. &
remarried by 1810 Census.  Son Wm White and his wife Elizabeth were already members
with Robt Sr at this same church 1809.

Not
e:  The Lower Fairforest was a meeting house or arm of the Padgett's up until 1809, when it became its own church,
members already in attendence of the new LF Church in 1809, some were not shown to be RECEIVED, only new
members would be shown received, otherwise, we would have seen Robert White Sr DISMISSED from Padgett's Creek
and Received at LF Church, thus, Elizabeth White, Received in May 1812, could be the Betsey Howard RESTORED to
membership at the Padgett's in Nov 1812,  to clear her record and reputation...who married Robert White Sr.  Working THEORY of course.

Many Marriages were performed by the Rev's at Padgett's Creek
Robt White's daughter Mildred is an example, in her 1855 Application
for bounty land for her husband's service, War 1812, she states,
"they were married by Baptist minister Thomas Ray, 23 Aug 1815 at Padgett's
Creek Baptist Church, Union Co SC..."
No marriage records were kept until 1906, but I suspect, that a Rev, at Padgett's married Robert & Elizabeth.

From the list of Elizabeth's under Padgett's some can be eliminated, simply by seeing their husbands name as 'wife of....'.

If Robert did marry within a 3 year period after Milly's death, and the fact that Robert was very Baptist, and I would guess, would expect his wife to be, also, be in attendance at the Padgett's... or was already...

As a Blacksmth and Farmer, Robert Sr., would not have had time to shop
for a new wife, church and neighborhood, would be the easiest way... My
guess, again, is he met her at the Padgett's or she was widowed from a prior marriage...  in the immediate neighborhood.

Meaning of:

"RECEIVED BY EXPERIENCE vs by LETTER"

Children were not Received by Exp or letter, they had to become of age and when they felt they were ready, usually, in their 20's, then they would be received as a member or fellowship, & baptized.

Received by experience or letter, indicates these are older adults, who have already been received, or baptized, maybe at other churches and were in good standing with there prior church.

Knowing of above information may assist us in determining or sorting out the many Elizabeth's that were in attendence at the Padgett's, and thus narrow the field down to fewer possibilities.

2018 Update:  Elizabwth Howard, above, appears to be our current candidate as Robert White Sr's 2nd wife.  She was also suggested by another researcher.
