seeking revenge collected all whites
found living in the Nation & executed
them. It is repeatedly quoted that John
was Tortured, mutilated and burned

of Colonial Settlers in the area.  Charged with
making powder for the soldiers. The atrocities
were mutual, Cherokee's felt betrayed by the Brits.

Cherokee Chief

Ostenaco

Ostenaco was a war chief who, in 1756, joined the English in a campaign against the French-allied Shawnee during the Seven Years War (French and Indian War). His warriors were abandoned by the British troops when their provisions were lost while crossing a swollen river. His band "confiscated" horses from the ungrateful Virginians who retaliated by killing 24 of his party. A period of retaliatory raids begain between the Cherokee and colonists. In 1762, the Cherokee captured Fort Loundon (near present Venore TN). Eventually, devastation of the Cherokee country by large colonial armies forced the Cherokee to sue for peace. Lt. Henry Timberlake volunteered to stay with the Cherokee to improve Cherokee-English relations. Ostenaco, along with Stalking Turkey and Pouting Pigeon, visited London in 1762 to see King George III accompanied by Lt. Henry Timberlake and interpreter, William Shorey, who died in route

___________________________

James Brother, Col. Zachariah Gibbs, was in the British Army,
his Regiment known as, 'Spartan Militia, Ninety Six Brigade'.
A Capt James Gibbs and Phillip Gibbs are listed on a Pay
Abstract dated 14 Jun to 13 Dec 1780, along with many
others of the Spartanburg, Union Co SC area. Now, it is
possibly James was called upon for Militia Duty with his
brothers unit, I cannot find another James in this area. But
what is very clear, James fought 491 days as a Patriot,
the reason for his name on his Brothers roster may never
be known. Zach, James and Phillip were brothers, their land
very close to each others. Phillip was a preacher and moved
to GA after the War, James died in Union Co SC, and Col
Zachariah Gibbs, whose land was confiscated, fled to Nova
Scotia Canada, where he received 1,000 acres of land from
the British, for his service.  Later, he sold that land and attempted
to come back the SC, to retrieve his two daughters, but his
ship was lost at sea, and presumed to have perished at sea.

In honorable Memory of our Soldiers of the:

Illinois Regiment  -  'Protectors of the Western Frontier'

Revolutionary War

'The Forgotten Hero's ' - 'The cruelty of History to forget such Patriots ...'

Protected Gen George Washington armies from being attacked from west by British
and Indian forces
, a resounding success...

While the Continental Armies were suffering defeats in the East, the Illinois
Regiment, at a most critical time of the war, continued to capture and defeat
the British and warring Indian Nations of the West.

Without a doubt, had the IL Reg, failed in the West, the out come of the
Revolutionary War would have been significantly different and the borders
with Canada very different today, and quite possibly would have meant another
war to define our nations boundries.

Daring attempts were made to procure arms from the Spanish at New Orleans
to supply the Western frontier units, costing many lives in the process.

This units soldiers, many who had already fought with Gen Washington's continental
regulars in the east, and many of these hero's, in previous wars, continued their services,
under Gen George R Clark's, Illinois Regiment, and the United States.  Most brought their
families, who suffered  through unthinkable conditions in the wilds of the unknown west.

"WE WILL NOT LET THE MEMORY OF YOUR VISION, PATRIOTISM & SACRIFICE
DIMINISH OVER TIME", AND SHOULD THOSE OF POWER SEE FIT TO MOLD A NEW
MEANING TO THESE TRAITS, WE SHALL 'RATTLE-THE-CAGE-OF-TRUTH',  AND RESTORE
THE MEMORY OF OUR TRUE AND HONORABLE PATRIOTS.

"There is a terrible war coming, and these young men who have never

able to make up my mind to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home. I have therefore resigned
my commission in the Army, and save in defense of my native State, with the sincere hope that my poor services may
never be needed, I hope I may never be called on to draw my sword....."

"No earthly act would give me so much pleasure as to restore peace to my country, but I fear it is now out of the
power of man, and in God alone must be our trust. I think our policy should be purely on the defensive, to resist
aggression and allow time to allay the passions and permit reason to resume her sway."

"War to preserve the Union and end Slavery,
Preserve the Constitutions as interpreted by some,
against Federal consolidation & taxation, & above all, tariffs
on what the south produced, as northern farmers couldn't compete
with the cheap labor of slavery in the south, & still other reasons. Most
CSA soldiers were farmers didn't own slaves & most were illiterate & understood
that they were defending the south & protecting their families & lands from an invading
army from the north, and preserving the constitutions as originally understood, less than 5%
of southerners owned slaves. Union Pres. Lincoln and his Gen. Sherman both had owned slaves.
To their credit, rose above their beliefs and removed this, institution of slavery, from our society.

Both sides fought for the defining principles of Freedom, in our country

Pvt Co C, 18th SC Inf. Regt. - "Army of Northern Virginia"

Short Battle Description on day Wm was killed
On August 30,
Pope (Union) renewed his attacks, (at Manassas) seemingly unaware that Longstreet (CSA) was on the field. When massed Confederate artillery devastated a Union assault by Fitz John Porter's command, Longstreet's wing of 28,000 men counterattacked in the largest, simultaneous mass assault of the war. The Union left flank was crushed and the army driven back to Bull Run. Only an effective Union rearguard action prevented a replay of the First Manassas disaster. Pope's retreat to Centreville was precipitous, nonetheless. The next day, Lee ordered his army in pursuit. This was the decisive battle of the Northern Virginia Campaign.

Spartanburg Dist., Discharged at Greensboro
NC, 26 April 1865, Per Pension Application

When Union cavalry threatened Danville, Davis and his cabinet managed to escape
by train and reassembled in
Greensboro on April 11, 1865. While in the city, Davis & his cabinet decided to try to escape overseas in order to avoid capture by the victorious Union forces; they left Greensboro and separated. Greensboro is notable as the last place where the entire Confederate government met as a group: it is considered the "final" capital city of the Confederacy.

In July Gano's Brigade attacked the Sixth Kansas Cavalry within five miles of Fort Smith and captured 400 six-shooters, 200 Sharps rifles, and a number of horses, all badly needed supplies. In September 1864 the brigade participated in the battle of Cabin Creek, the last major engagement of the war in Indian Territory. It took a supply train from 610 Union troops en route from Fort Scott, Kansas, to Fort Gibson, Indian Territory. By October the brigade was south of the Arkansas River, and in January 1865 it was put under the command of Gen. Hamilton P. Bee and sent to Rusk, Texas, as Bee's Brigade.

"This horrible war comes to an end, surrender your pride soldier, this cause has been decided..."
Go home to your lives, return to your trade, unit with your families, change, heal & Peace Brothers"

Peace Signing - Appomattox VA - April 9th 1865 - End of the War!

Gen Ulysses Grant & Gen Robert E Lee
Robert E. Lee - Jan. 5, 1866

With clear insight into all the merits of the cause for which he drew his sword in 1861, he wrote on January 5, 1866: "All that the South has ever desired was that the Union as established by our fathers should be preserved, and that the government as originally organized should be administered in purity and truth." Six months later he wrote: "I had no other guide, nor had I any other object than the defense of those principles of American liberty upon which the constitutions of the several States were originally founded, and unless they are strictly observed I fear there will be an end of Republican government in this country."

1st National Confederate Flag

Dear Family:

Our great... Grandfathers & distant Uncles were largely Confederate Soldiers.  Though I am sure many of our descendant families most certainly have a Union Soldier or two... in all respects... I am hopeful to find more Blue Coats down the lineage someday.  95% of the Confederates did NOT own slaves, to them, they were fighting for their Nations ideas & Southern Freedom, (unfortunately, didn't include everyone), to protect their families and lands, any of us would have done the same...  Many of our Southern men folk were conscripted into service, anyone between the ages of 18 and 45 years old was required to serve in the Confederate militaries, usually, for the duration of the War, though there were reasons one could be exempted.

Well over 1/2 Million American Soldiers, on both sides were killed in this war.  Countless others disabled by injuries.  The young men in our Family paid a heavy price in the Civil War.  It was common to have several sons killed, not to mention the sacrifices of their families.

We as citizens have the supreme responsibility to check and understand our leaderships ambitions, and ventures into conflicts here and abroad, and voice our concerns to our representatives.  War is not an innate act as some would have you believe, there is always hope for " Peace on Earth ".

The reasons for war become clouded over time, the Civil War, preserved the Union, and ended slavery, there were other reasons for this war, some constitutional, others involving taxation, and still other reasons.  However, the outcome led to these United States of America.  It paved the way for this nation of immigrants, allowing us to live in a diverse society, where everybody, has somewhat, of a chance to improve their lot.  The Civil War,  was a worthy cause, both sides showed their character, fighting for their defining principals of freedom, and still sets the example for the rest of the world, that we can include all peoples of the world into our principals of freedom.   It can be said, we are still striving to someday reach that utopian society, the way it looks today, we have a long way to go, and, as a society, much to learn.

Harvey D Shaver appears to have been a member of Battery D, 2nd Battalion, 131st Field Artillery and died at 100 Kilo Camp, Burma on 6 Sep 1943.

The 2nd Battalion, 131st Field Artillery was aboard the USS Houston on 28 Feb 1942 when that Cruiser (CA-30) was surrounded by enemy Japanese ships.

The USS Houston was sunk and only 368 of the 1011 on board the ship managed to reach shore. Within days all survivors became Japanese POWs.

The battalion was not heard from again until after the war. They would endure Japan's Death Railroad, made famous in the movie, The "Bridge On The River Kwai".

Harvey Shaver has a memorial at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii. The 2nd Battalion, 131st Field Artillery is the most decorated unit in Texas of any war.

The unit was known as the "Lost Battalion" and was a Texas National GurdUnit.

Oh...The Freedoms we so enjoy - To our guardian's of Freedom - eternally, we shall never allow
your memory to fade, for if history shall repeat, we shall join - your enternal struggle...
we are without-voice in the presence of your history, it has been said and done, we live
your gift daily, though unconscious - should freedom again sway to the tyrant we shall
rise in your image and again... tame or trample the beast ...  We bask in the glory of
of your ether - only good to our mankind can result from such conviction & principle,
the legacy left us, is peace on earth, it is the duty, to this end, we must triumph
or parish - Oh...The Freedoms we so enjoy!

-------------------------

FREEDOM

"FREEDOM - How did your Civilization Conceptualize its meaning?
The meaning of Freedom today, had a differernt connotation in 1775.
Ours is a concept created & nurtured by generations of Americans since.
It changes with the times, we must always be vigilant, to protect what is
good in Freedom, and YES, we must change Freedoms way, when it no
longer serves our great and changing Society. That is what Freedom is about."

Freedom in a hunter-gatherer society fits within a cooperative society.............
Freedom in an Army fits within a cooperative society - your life depends on it...
Freedoms success in a society of Billions of people has its own defining principles.
Indian Societies Freedom hinged on knowledge of their environment & cooperation

Molding new & Defending Freedoms - is it worth dying for?
YES! it is essential for our societies survival... We know about
totalitarian / oppressive societies & the consequences of apathy.

Freedom - worth dying for others..? it depends;  in a day of
greed, materialism, exploitation, corporate/government corruption,
'we better have our own store in order' before we suggest our brand
of freedom on other societies, give them the tools and let them create
their Freedoms, who knows, we may end up envying those fresh ideas!
'The Nature of Nature is diversity - this is a concept that brings us here today.."
There is an evolution to Freedom, for peace sake, we must respect their journey's...

-------------------------

Spend a little time thinking of Freedom
There are plenty of ancestors above who
died for their personal definitions of free-
dom - the Future may dictate a call to defend
Freedom once again, at home or overseas, life
just doesn't come to a halt because we're here!

-------------------------

We can have our own-little-world of defining freedoms, the constitution
provides and protects the people, with our basic rights and freedoms as
long as we are vigilant and stern in protecting them.  Personal freedom
is great as long as it doesn't hurt others, and the planet we so depend on
for human existence, and the chains of life cycles that we so depend upon..

I am an American Patriot
