Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1904, J. S. James, in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D.C.

HARRY D. WHITE AND MISS LOLA WHITE

...Miss Loll White died in Atlanta a few years since, she was a bright musician, and could sing most any tune in the book. She was a leader in music for eight years; performed well on the piano and organ, and was thoroughly posted in music. She was in the choir in one of the leading churches and led the music for several years, up to the time of her death. She was a woman of great beauty, well educated, highly esteemed and a Christian lady, having been a member of the Baptist Church most all her life. She was in the bloom of womanhood when death claimed her as its victim. The writer of this sketch only met Miss Loll twice. She was at the meeting, of the Concord Convention held at Douglasville the year before she died and led two beautiful lessons during that convention, and endeared herself to the people of Douglasville, and the surrounding country. She had a sweet voice, pleasant manners and led music to perfection. In honor of her name, one of the quarterlies of the Stone Mountain Singing Convention, has been converted into a memorial singing, in memory of Miss Loll White. We don't suppose there was a more popular young woman that belonged to the convention than Miss Loll. If she had lived, she was to have been married in a few months, to one of the leading physicians of Atlanta."

1856 - The Organ
D. P. in Henry Co AL

Dear Mike,

Are you familiar with anyone in your family or
collaterals names "T. L. White" who might have lived
at New Orleans, LA? In B. F. White's newspaper, The
Organ
, he kept folks apprised of the status of the
Sacred Harp, announcing new shipments in, etc. One of
the places it could be purchased was from a "T. L.
White on Canal St. in New Orleans". Of course, this
could be just a proprietor of a book store who
happened to have the same last name. Here a
transcription of the advertisement:

"For Sacred Harps, by White and King, apply to

T. L. White, No. 105 Canal st. N. Orleans
J. K. Randal & Co., No 44 water st. Mobile
John W. Pease, Columbus, Ga.
J. J. & S. P. Richards, Macon, Ga.
Richards & Brother, Griffin, Ga.
Rev. Thomas Murphy, Greenville, Ga.
The Proprietor, Hamilton, Ga.
D. P. White, Curetons Bridge, Henry co. Al.
B. G. Atkins, Notasulga, Ala.

All of whom will keep on hand a constant supply of
SACRED HARPS, Wholesale and Retail."

[The Organ, Vo. 5, No. 4, April 5, 1856]

Also notice this provides us with a location in Henry
Co. Ala. where David Patillo White was living circa
1856.

1876 - Church Record on D. P. White

Shiloh Church at Etna in Smith County

Research Provided by:  Robert Vaughn
rl_vaughn@yahoo.com

I ran across this tidbit on D. P. White. It is found in the 1876 Cherokee Baptist Association
minutes.
In the list of churches, the Shiloh Church at Etna in Smith County lists "D. P. White" as their
church clerk. I'm pretty sure this is B. F.'s son. Etna was the equivalent of the present-day Bullard
just north of Larissa/Mt. Selman over in Smith County. Etna stands in relation to Bullard as Larissa to Mt.
Selman. Both are the old towns that were bypassed by the railroad and Bullard & Mt. Selman are the new
towns that rose up, at the railroad. Anyway, a church with the post office at Etna probably would have been
quite close to where D. P. was living according to the 1880 & 1900 censuses, and he may have even settled at a different place when he first arrived in the area.

1903
- Obituaries of David & Celeste

Mt. Selman Cherokee Co TX

Research Provided by:  Robert Vaughn
rl_vaughn@yahoo.com

"Newspaper Obituaries 1836-1908, Cherokee Co., Texas
(Book # I, compiled by Helen Woodell Crawford and published in 1903)

'A notice of the death of "David R. White', of Mt. Selman in the 11-6-1903 issue. The middle initial is wrong, but the age is right,'white male 75 years old, died on 10-23-1903'.

I went to the Cherokee Co. courthouse and looked this up. In the original records the initial also appears to be an "R", but I still believe this is David Patillo White. How many 75 yr. old David White's were there likely to be in Mt. Selman?

In this same, "Newspaper Obituaries" book, excerpted from 2-5-1904**, we read: "Mt. Selman: Mrs. D. P. White, died at her home Tuesday night. She had been an invalid for 15 or 16 years. She leaves 2 daughters and 3 sons."

Below is page 7 of the, "Cherokee Co Banner, (Jacksonville, Tex), Vol 17, No. 30, Ed 1, Friday 5, 1904, Page 7 of 7.

Below is the Front page of the said Newspaper, or page 1, Celeste death notice is on
Page 7, col. 4 at bottom, of the page as Mrs DP White...

Below is page 7, the Death Notice is in col. 4 at bottom of page, in Yellow.

David and Celeste lived around Larissa/Mt. Selman (which is about 3 miles apart) and it would seem most likely that they would be buried at Larissa. There is no cemetery in Mt. Selman. But I have gone to Larissa and looked at every tombstone. There is not one there for them. They could be in unmarked graves, I suppose. The next closest cemetery might be at Bullard in Smith County. I haven't looked there. I'm not really sure if anything else "cemetery-wise" is closer.

The other little bit of information I have is from "Cherokee County History, copyright 1986 by the Cherokee County Historical Society. From pages 89-96, D. P. White was elected Justice of the Peace Precinct #4 (Mt. Selman area) on 11-6-1888 and again on 11-4-1890. He was commissioned a notary public on 6-1-1893 and every two years thereafter, the last time being 6-1-1903" (also indicating his 1903 death is correct).

Journey's from Henry County
Alabama to Polk County Texas

Research Provided by:  Robert Vaughn
rl_vaughn@yahoo.com

I found a book at the SFA Library - "The History of Polk County, by Emma Haynes (1937, evidently self published)". It has chapters on different cities and communities in Polk County. Chapter Fifteen (p. 142) starts a chapter on the Providence community "four miles southeast of Livingston".

What I found most interesting was that "The community was first called Henry County Settlement". That is, Henry County as in Alabama, because of its early settlement. Several related families (Peebles, Brock, Williams, Lowe, and Galloway) "moved here from Henry County, Alabama in ox wagons in 1850". It also says that "...Reverend Reuben Brown lived here before the Peebles came...Rev. Brown was from Alabama, but not from Henry County".  I don't have much knowledge of David P.'s wife's family, but this Rev. Brown might be related.

Civil War Service of a Davis P. White....

Also, on page 145, 146 is a list of those from the Henry County (Providence) Settlement who fought in the Civil War. One on the list is a "Davis P. White". This might be someone altogether different, or could be our "David P. White", although I don't know if he fought in the war.  If this is him, and judging by the place of birth of Ella (according to the 1870 Polk Co. census), they must have arrived there around 1861. Some of this is probably more meaningful to you.

Notes from Mike:
The link between Henry Co AL and Polk Co TX, is significant, in that
it shows a pattern, a reason a person may have migrated to Polk Co TX
from Henry Co AL. It implies, a possible family relation or connection.

Civil War:
There were two primary Regiments from Polk Co TX;  1st & 5th Infantry Regiments,
David may have served in one of these Units.  Initially, it appears neither he nor David's
wife filed from a Confederate Pension, but can mean they made do much money to re-
ceive a pension, or he could have been in a Militia unit. (Investigating).

A Historical Perspective
- DP White -

Presented by: Robert Vaughn

rl_vaughn@yahoo.com

One thing that could prove to be significant (or not) is
that David's stay in Henry County AL might have had an
influence on Sacred Harp singers who would later take
part in the 1902 Cooper Revision of the Sacred Harp
book.

Here it is:

"David Patillo White, a son of B. F. White and one of
the older children, has been of particular interest to
me since I found that he not only migrated to Texas,
but also lived for about 30 years (late 1800s) in the
same area that my brother was living at the time I
discovered that information (ca. 1990).

With the help of Michael White, I've found some new
information, and perhaps some of it will be
interesting to the historically-minded. [When I say
new here, I mean new to me, rlv]

     D. P. White was born in South Carolina in 1828 and
moved with his family to Georgia. In the 1850 Harris
County, Georgia census, he is still living with B. F.
and Thurza, is 21 yrs. old, and is listed as a music
teacher.

It appears that he married Celeste V. Brown in Alabama
around 1853/54. By the time of the 1860 census, D. P.
and his family were living in Henry County, Alabama
(Abbeville beat) and he is listed as a school teacher.
Though I can't determine how long they stayed in Henry
County, his stay here is interesting and perhaps
significant to the history of Sacred Harp. Dothan and
Houston County, Alabama (the home of W. M. Cooper)
were part of Henry County until Houston County was
created in 1903. But Cooper himself (1850-1916) would
have only been a youth during White's stay in the
county.

Based on his marriage and the places of birth of his
children, D. P. was in Alabama by the mid 1850s and
had removed to Texas circa 1861-64 (there is a discrepancy
in the place of birth of the significant child in the
1870 and 1880 census).

In 1870, D. P. and his family were living in or near
Livingston in Polk County, Texas. This area had a
heavy immigration from Henry County, Alabama. In fact,
Providence, about 4 miles southeast of Livingston, was
originally called the Henry County Settlement. By 1880
they were living in Cherokee County, Texas in the
Larissa/Mt. Selman area, where D. P. and Celeste
remained until their deaths in 1903 and 1904,
respectively. In 1870 & 1880, his occupation is given
as farmer. The 1890 census is missing, and in 1900 his
occupation is not given. But Cherokee County records
also indicate he served as a justice of the peace and
a notary public.

In relation to the revisions of the Sacred Harp - D.
P. White was in Georgia in 1850 (contributing American
Star, Auburn, Columbiana, Norwich, Restoration, &
Texas), Alabama in 1859 (none?), and Texas in 1869 (?,
releases book with father in 1870). Was D. P. already
thinking about the lure of Texas when he named a tune
"Texas"?

Though names are hard to make out and match up from
census to census, it appears that D. P. and Celeste
had nine children.

Their place of burial remains a mystery."

White, Robert H. -- Private - July 8, 1861.
Captured at Petersburg, Virginia April 3, 1865.
Released at Hart's Island, New York Harbor June 15, 1865.

HISTORICAL NOTES:

Mustered into service, July 8, 1861 at Griffin, GA, served with Floyd's Brigade in West Virginia, reassigned to Lawton's Brigade at Savannah, arriving January 1, 1862, reorganized May 1862. The Lawton-Gordon-Evans Georgia Brigade (so-named for its three principal commanders) was one of the premier brigades of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, serving with distinction from the Seven Days battles around Richmond (May-June 1862) until its surrender at Appomattox Court House (April 9, 1865). The brigade was initially comprised of six regiments (13th, 26th, 31st, 38th, 60th, and 61st Georgia), which were raised at the call of Governor Joe Brown for the defense of the Georgia coast following the bombardment of Fort Sumter. The 13th Georgia had initially mustered into Confederate service on July 8, 1861 and served briefly with Brig. Gen. John B. Floyd's brigade in West Virginia, seeing minor action at the Battles of Sewell Mountain and Laurel Hill before being returned to Georgia due to sickness and lack of clothing suitable for the harsh winter climate in the West Virginia mountains. While on coastal duty, they engaged in a number of skirmishes, including the capture of a gunboat that afterwards bore their name and a brush-up with the 8th Michigan on Whitemarsh Island, Georgia on April 16, 1862. The six regiments were placed under the command of Brig. Gen. Alexander Lawton, commander of the Georgia Military District, who had proposed formation of an "elite brigade" of Georgia troops to answer Richmond's call for troops to repel the threat posed by McClellan's advance from Williamsburg on the Confederate capital (i.e. the Peninsula Campaign). In May 1862, the six regiments, which mustered between 6,000-7000 men, were moved by train to Lynchburg and the Shenandoah Valley to reenforce Stonewall Jackson as part of a deception planned by General Lee to mask his planned offensive against McClellan's forces around Richmond. MRS. CARRIE ADAIR

The wife of Col. Adair was a daughter of B. F. White. She was married to Col. Wm. Adair, a prominent and influential lawyer of the State of Alabama. She has been dead several years and is buried in the city of Atlanta in the family burying ground. She was the mother of one child, a daughter, who is also buried by the side of her mother. Mrs. Adair was well versed in music -- took lessons from her father for a long time -- share was a fine singer and was no less in devotion, and in the advocacy of the cause of vocal music, than that of her father, mother, brothers and sisters.' She was a strict member of the Baptist Church and believed in the atonement made by her Lord and Master. She died with a Christian hope of eternal salvation. She was noted for her performing on the instrument, and was a gifted musician and taught instrumental music.

1878 - Mrs. Mary C Adair female; 72 Decatur; Occupation, Music Teacher

1879 - Mary C Adair, female: 6 Spring: Widow of Wm Adair.  There is a separate listing for Miss Willie Adair at the same address: occupation Hair Work.

1883 - Mary C Adair, female: 161 Fraser: Widow of Wm Adair.  There is a separate listing for Miss Willie Adair at the same address.

1886 - Mrs Mary C Adair female; 91 E Harris; Occupation, Music Teacher.

(1880 census has her daughter listed incorrectly as her sister, among other errors)

**There is an Oakland Cemetery record for a Miss Willie Adair with DOD as June 16, 1886, Atlanta, Ga.
The DOB is reported as 1866, which I believe is in error. Should be about 1852.  I believe that this may
be the burial of Mary Willie Adair.

Have not been able to locate any other records after 1886.

Mrs. Bird, like her brothers and sisters, were born with the faculty of music, and was educated in music by her father, and is a great admirer of the old Sacred Harp, but loves all good music. She is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church and has been for many years. She is a woman of amiable disposition and Christian character. Marriage Announcement

Miss Cora Lyon to Charles P. Byrd

The Courant American Newspaperz
Cartersville, Georgia
November 12, 1896, Page 8

Pretty Wedding.

Miss Cora Lyon, of This County, Becomes Mrs. Charles P. Byrd.

At the home of her aunt, Mrs. W. W. Austell, at Austell, on Wednesday evening last Miss Cora Lyon, of Aylmer, in this county, was married to Mr. C. P. Byrd.

The Constitution of Thursday tells the story of the wedding as follows:

“At 6 o’clock yesterday afternoon, at the lovely country home of the bride’s aunt Mrs. William Austell, occurred one of the most beautiful weddings of the season, in which Miss Cora Melville Lyon, of Cartersville, and Mr. Charles P. Byrd, of Atlanta, were the contracting parties. The ceremony was impressively performed by the Rev. Dr. Pierce. Only the immediate families of the bride and groom and a few special friends were present.

“The lovely home never appeared to better advantage than on this occasion. The decorations were beautiful, consisting of palms, ferns and many rare plants. The refreshments served were most delightful and greatly enjoyed by all present.

“The bride was handsomely costumed in a traveling suit of brown, with hat to match, and carried a bouquet of Marechal Neil roses. Miss Lyon is the only daughter of Captain and Mrs. Thomas J. Lyon, and granddaughter of the late Colonel Lewis Tumlin, one of the wealthiest and most influential men of his day. She is one of the acknowledged belles of the state, beautiful, cultured and refined, and her bright and happy disposition endears her to all who knew her.

“Mr. Byrd is one of Atlanta’s most active and prominent business men. He is a gentleman of many rare qualities.

“Miss Lyon is the namesake and favorite niece of her aunt, and a sweet coincidence of this marriage is the fact that it occurred on the wedding day of Mrs. Austell, just twenty years ago, when as Miss Cora Tumlin, no fairer or more beautiful young woman ever stood at the marriage altar.

“Mr. and Mrs. Byrd left last night for an extended tour through the north and east, returning December 1 st, after which time they will be at home to their friends at 897 Peachtree street.”

The bride is one of the most beautiful as well as most popular ladies of this section of the state and her many friends wish her many joys and prosperity.

Subject:
Seeking information on James Linton White Sr.
who was the first Scoutmaster in Columbus GA,
formed Troop #1, May 1911.

Web Link:
http://www.troop169.com/about-troop-169/

From Bill Storey,

"I have been researching and compiling the early scouting history in our local Chattahoochee Council for many years. The first 10 years of scouting here has been very challenging since there wasn't a scout council to oversee the local troops. I finally have been able to establish that James Linton White was the first scoutmaster in Columbus having formed Troop 1 in May 1911. They met at the YMCA and appear to have been active for at least 2 years. I was hoping to obtain a nice photo of James White dated around 1911, if not a later would be just fine. Also if there is any information about his troop it would be greatly appreciated. Some of his scouts were Forest Johnson, Dexter Jordan, Edwin Thomas, Clifford Brady, George Roberts, Terrill Hill, Nunnally Johnson, Henry Pease and Charles Douglas. If you can help please contact me.

Yours in scouting,

Bill Storey

After Closing in 1950's members relocated to Wesley Chapel

Note of Apprecition:
In 2012 and 2013 FindAGrave volunteer, Mr Walter Bussell "bud", on my request, for photo's of the grave markers, at Miller, took it upon himself to again survey the cemetery, discovering most of the grave stones were covered with dirt, grass and bushes, he  cleared and cleaned the area around the various graves and then took photo's, he also contacted members of various genealogy societies, and obtained a history, map and old surevey's, and made sure everyone interred at Miller Cemetery was accounted for, and added to FindAGrave.com, we cannot thank Mr Walter Bussell "Bud" enough for this herculean effor on the families behalf, with FindAGrave.com, we now have a way to remember our ancestors forever, and expand the knowledge of our families and related families.
