After BF White died he was
Eulogized by:

"The Chattahoochee Musical Convention"
After teaching twenty years, his soul became so bounding with music that he could not rest
until he had the satisfaction of seeing his own productions and the many rich collections from
his co-laborers in one grand compilation--the Sacred Harp, 1844. He was highly delighted with
the circulation of the work.--He was charmed with each revision and edition, with their appendices,
millions of copies of which have been sold throughout the land. ... Thousands and tens of thousands
have enjoyed the music found alone in the Sacred Harp. ...
Major White was never more at home than when surrounded with a band of sweet singers ...
He was spirited and never failed to animate all whom he led. ...
All were naturally drawn toward him as he discoursed upon music and its charms.

History or Harris County Georgia

Provision for Homestead Exemptions

The Constitution provides that each head of a family, or guardian or trustee
of a faimly of minor children, shall be entitled to a homestead of realty to the value
of $2,000 in specie, and personal property to the value of $1,000 in specie; and
no court or ministerial officer in the State shall ever have jurisdiction or authority
to enforce any decree of judgement or execution against any property so set apart,
except for taxes, purchase money unpaid, or expense incurred in its improvement.
The Supreme Court of this State has held that this exemption or homestead is not
good against contracts made before the adoption of the Constitution, and the Supreme
Court of the United States has confirmed this decision of our State Supreme Court...

1852 - The Organ
First Newspaper in Hamilton Harris County Georgia

BF White - Newspaper Editor

January 1852 - The weekly Newspaper 'The Organ'

was started in Hamilton, Georgia by the authority of
the 'Southern Musical Convention' with B. F. White
as Superintendant.

Information Provided by:
Donald Clarke

A bit more detail:

In 1852, B. F. White was named as Superintendent of the first newspaper published in Harris County, The Organ, which was "published by authority of the
"Southern Musical Convention" This newspaper, published in Hamilton, Georgia, served a double purpose:
it printed various local and national news stories, taken from major newspapers or off the telegraph, but was
also meant as a musical publication. Among the musical materials it included were "songs, minutes of singing conventions,
musical debates, letters from singers, and advertisements for books." White participated with gusto in a number of debates
about music in the pages of this paper.  A few Sacred Harp songs to this day appear in the W. M. Cooper edition of the book with the
mysterious notation "For the Organ". This notation, otherwise baffling in a tradition that is firmly a cappella, apparently simply indicates the
original venue of publication.

1856 - The Organ

Dear Mike,

Are you familiar with anyone in your family or
collaterals names "T. L. White" who might have lived
at New Orleans, LA? In B. F. White's newspaper, The
Organ
, he kept folks apprised of the status of the
Sacred Harp, announcing new shipments in, etc. One of
the places it could be purchased was from a "T. L.
White on Canal St. in New Orleans". Of course, this
could be just a proprietor of a book store who
happened to have the same last name. Here a
transcription of the advertisement:

"For Sacred Harps, by White and King, apply to

T. L. White, No. 105 Canal st. N. Orleans
J. K. Randal & Co., No 44 water st. Mobile
John W. Pease, Columbus, Ga.
J. J. & S. P. Richards, Macon, Ga.
Richards & Brother, Griffin, Ga.
Rev. Thomas Murphy, Greenville, Ga.
The Proprietor, Hamilton, Ga.
D. P. White, Curetons Bridge, Henry co. Al.
B. G. Atkins, Notasulga, Ala.

All of whom will keep on hand a constant supply of
SACRED HARPS, Wholesale and Retail."

[The Organ, Vo. 5, No. 4, April 5, 1856]

Also notice this provides us with a location in Henry
Co. Ala. where David Patillo White was living circa
1856.

Notes:  Also buried on this plot.

Two field stones directly in front of Ben & Thurza's, marker reads:
B F W, the other stone T W, could belong to Ben & Thurza, could
also be their children, BF White Jr? and/or dau Thurza White?

In front of the tree is a tombstone that reads:

      Robert H. White b. 14 Apr 1831 d.11 Mar 1891.

To the right of the tree are two plaques inbedded into the ground that read as follows:

     Nancy White Byrd b. 22 Nov 1835 d.5 Feb 1924
     Theodore Henry Byrd b.17 Apr 1827 d.5 Feb 1883

Lying flat and inbebbed into the ground butt-up-aganist the tree is a stone with the initials:
B.F.S or RFS.  I have no idea who this belongs to.
Behind this plot not BF's is a Grave marked
Section 4, block 118, Lot 3 N - There is the same numbers, except Lot 3N, where there is
4N (white) - The name is Richard F. Sams.  born about 1838 died 8/27/1878.   RFS - It appears
someone might have moved his Foot stone from R F Sams plot, site to BF's...Best Guess, that
was in 2001, so but now, it is probably moved back to where it belongs, will check someday.

=============================
October 11, 2011 - Update:
=============================

From Judy K Wilson, who maintains records for this cemetery:
I inquired to her about a "Thurza Melvina White" born: 1896
and Died: Feb 11, 1897", the information said she was BF's child
BF & TW were deceased by 1879.  Had her remove that info from
FindAGrave.com.

The Mystery that Remains:

Who does this baby Thurza in BF's plot belong to?
"
Aged 1 year. Section 4, Block 118, Lot 4N, Grave 1."

I belive this baby has to belong to either BF Jr, or James L White.

William Decatur White and his Wife Lydia are also buried in this block 118.

Wm Walker and BF White Together again!

"...Preceeding Ben's death he said he had reqrets in his life..."

This writer knowing the heart of BF White, by his lifes deeds,
I am sure he had long forgiven his ole friend for not crediting
him nor mentioning him in his book 'Southern Harmony" after
they both had contributed to Wm's book, a fact now known
all in the Sacred Harp world. Both men contributed their lives
to Sacred Harp music, BF mentored Wm, both of whom be-
came teachers and mentors of countless other's, inspiring and
enriching spirits and lives of all whom partake in Sacred Harp.

Song in 'Sacred Harp' & 'Christian Harmony'

"Long Sought Home" by Wm Bobo

Story by 'Sacred Harp Researcher', Robert Vaughn

"William Bobo composed at least one song - 'Long Sought Home'.
This song, as far as I can tell, first appeared on page 302 in William
Walker's 2nd Edition of "The Southern Harmony" in 1847.  It later
appeared in other books - Walker's "Christian Harmony", p. 159
(probably in 1866), "The Scred Harp in J. S. James Edition, p.253a
(1911), "The Sacred Harp" (Denson Edition), p. 235 (1936), and "The
Sacred Harp" (Cooper Edition), p. 343 (1992)".

"I knew that William Bobo wrote the song, but hadn't made the
connection that he was THAT William Bobo. Then this past weekend
I bought a CD entitled "Religion is a Fortune", which has "Long
Sought Home" on it. In the liner notes, Dr. Warren Steel of
Mississippi St. Univ. mentions that he was B. F. White's nephew."

The Family expresses its gratitude
to Mr Vaughn for sharing his research
on 'William Bobo'.

Golightly's Attending the Cedar Springs
Baptist Church Spartanburg Co SC

Not Attending this church, at any time:

BF & Thurza (Golightly) White  (See Notes below)

Attending the Church are:

David Golightly Family (father of Thurza)

Wm Walker  dismissed:                      Rec:  Apr 22, 1826
(Father of Wm Walker Jr)
Susanna        dismissed:                      Rec:  Apr 22, 1826
(Mother of Wm Walker Jr)
Dad David    dismissed: Sept 24, 1837 Rec: Nov xx, 1802
Son Henry    dismissed: Sept 24, 1837 Rec: May 26, 1832
Dau Amy      dismissed: May 23, 1835 Rec: May 26, 1832
Wm Walker   dismissed:                      Rec: May 26, 1832
(husband of Amy - need to verify)
Dau Martha   dismissed: Sept 24, 1837 Rec: Jun  24, 1832/33

Dau Melvina dismissed:  Jul   27, 1850 Rec: Dec 26, 1846
M. L.            received:    Dec 22, 1855

Note: This indicates to me, the family was about to migrate.
Is possible the sons that left before 1837, went to AL 1st
and the Family followed.

NOTES:
BF & Thurza married in 1825, they are probably attending
another church, hopefully, someday I can find which one...
I will add, I am disappointed, as it has been said, Robert White Jr
raised BF White, taught him music, I would think they would both
be attending the same church.  BF & Thurza were also, said to be
Baptist missionaries, living SC in 1842.  This warrants further investigation.

There was a Melvina received twice at Cedar Springs, Thurza had
a sister named Melvina and Thurza's middle name was Melvina, the
Dismissed Dates on both Melvina's in the minutes, confirm this is
NOT Thurza, as they departed SC in 1842. Thurza's family, left for
Alabama in 1837, as the above minutes confirm.
