A Family Letter about the Rhodes Family

Provided by:
Mary Ruth (Norman) Thomas

Letter Written by:
Mrs. Althea W. (Rhodes) Hunsaker
Logan, UT
Sept 27, 1980

A Family Letter from a Descendant of the Rhodes, addressed to Mary Ruth (Norman) Thomas reveals some interesting details of the Rhodes family of Union Co SC and Richmond Co GA.

Biram Bobo Rhodes and Awry Whitlow Rhodes had just two children - William Francis Rhodes and Dicy Jane Bobo Rhodes- as you can see Biram Bobo Rhodes died in 1831 and Awry married #2, 9 Dec 1831,  Massey M. Copeland.  William Francis Rhodes (Uncle Billy) and Dicy Jane Rhodes came to Utah in March 1889.  Had been baptized members of the Mormon Church at Rhodes Mill Pond in Augusta, Richmond Co., Georgia and taught to keep records by the Mormon missionaries.  They brought many family records with them to Utah.  I have a picture of Awry Whitlow Rhodes Copeland handed down to me by my Mother from her Father.

I have been searching in Old 96 District- which Union, Abbeville and Laurens, Newberry, Edgefield and Spartanburg were a part of, for the parents of Awry Whitlow.  I can't get positive proof enough that the Genealogical library will accept as proof  as yet.

I have recently learned that John Rhodes, father of Biram Bobo Rhodes had 6 sons sons from records of William Francis Rhodes- Mary (Polly) Bobo Rhodes speaks of only one son HIRAM in her will made 7 April 1815, Union County SC.

I have just recently learned Mary's daughter Sarah (Sally) Rhodes who went back to Union County SC with her mother and married Tilman White a son of Robert White and Mildred Whitehead, after her mothers death. At her fathers, John Rhodes death Jan 1808, at Bedford, Richmond County GA. that Sarah or Sally was left under guardianship of Absolom Rhodes, John's brother. 1812.

"John Rhodes, 9 May 1798 notified the public in Richmond County GA, not to deal with his wife Pollie and he was determined to dispose of his own property and pay no debts except those he contracted".  John Rhodes parents were William Rhodes and Elizabeth Wofford Rhodes.  25 Dec 1789,  John Rhodes came personally before justices and made oath that William Rhodes his father of Union County SC-  I have a copy of the old "indenture signature of his father and mother.  Also copy of his oath and sale of land by William to Jesse.

Lewis Bobo Rhodes, a son of John Rhodes, came to Richmond County GA, after Mary (Polly) Bobo Rhodes death.  Walter A. Clark, who wrote the book, "A Lost Arcadia" , had access to Lewis Rhodes Family Bible, in which gave his marriage date to Mary White a daughter of Robert White and Mildred Whitehead, as 5 Feb 1810, Union County SC.

Mary Bobo Rhodes had 152 acres of land in Union County SC, on which she lived with Sally, Permelia, Matilda and Mernema- daughters and Hiram a younger son who was to live on the property.  Mary's brother Kindred Bobo was the executor, of her Will.

Richmond County State Historical Marker

RICHMOND COUNTY

Originally designated as the Parish of St. Paul by the Act creating it in 1758, the name was changed in 1777 to Richmond County in honor of the Duke of Richmond, who, as a member of Parliament, was a zealous supporter of the American cause, advocating independence of the Colonies. It originally included a large part of four other counties: Columbia, Jefferson, McDuffie and Warren. Included within its borders are the incorporated towns of Augusta, the county seat; Hephzibah, formerly Brothersville; Blythe; and McBean.

Originally a trading community dealing in pelfry and tobacco, later its economy rested on numerous industries, principally textile, operated by power developed from its numerous creeks and the Augusta Canal constructed in 1845-1846, and agricultural products from rich arable farm lands. Numerous military engagements occurred here during the Revolutionary War, during which Augusta was twice captured by the British.

During the War Between the States, the United States Arsenal surrendered to State forces without resistance, and a Confederate powder factory, said to the be the second largest then in existence, supplied the Confederate Army and Navy. United States Army encampments, McKenzie, Hancock and Gordon, maintained during the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II, respectively.

Notes from Mike White:
**7 Boys: By 1820 Lewis & Mary had 7 boys, we know that
James died in 1819, and John R we don't know, but
from the 1820 Census, it appears that John R may
have also died, as the other 5 boys are accounted for...

**There has to be a mistake, Mary White Rhodes is 32
years old in 1820, this census tells us a woman of 45
and up is living in this household, also, there are 2
males 26 & under 45, this has to account for the 7
females living in this household, 2 fathers or 2 families
one minus a mother... so we will have to look for a
relative who died between 1810 and 1820 that probably
was a wife. Lewis and Mary had NO girls of their own
by 1820.

Georgia Land Lottery, 1827
More research will need to done to determine if this is our Lewis

Description:
Georgia began in 1805 to offer land to its citizens through lotteries. These lotteries often serve as useful substitutes for the lost federal census returns for the early 1800s in the state. The 1827 lottery dispensed lots in Carroll, Coweta, Lee, Muscogee, and Troup counties. Search this database for thousands of Georgians who were "fortunate drawers" in this unique land dispersal.

Lewis Rhodes is not mentioned he was the oldest Child and son of
John Rhodes and his first wife, Elizabeth Bobo, deceased. Lewis was

Mary's last will and testiment was dated 7 Apr 1815 UC SC, probated Nov 22 1815, in UC SC, she mentions one son Hiram Rhodes.

Records of William Joseph Rhodes (1724-1788)
Grandfather of Lewis Rhodes

Below is a possible migration route of Wm Rhodes:  I have only been able to verify him in Union Co, but of Course this whole area up to 1796'ish, was Old 96th District, which included, Union, Spartanburg and Edgefield SC Counties, so anybodies guess is a good as this one, Wm died in 1788, being his Grant was in the area of the Eonree and Tiger Rivers, could place him in the Spartanburg and / or Union Co SC.  The Deed abstracts below indicate it was in the Union Co area.  What's conflicting is the LEASE AND RELEASE transaction is dated Dec 1789, Wm. died 1788?  I believe we need to view a copy of the original Grant, to verify the dates, abstracts have many errors.

"Moved to Orange Co NC, then Spartanburg SC, Union Co, to Edgefield County SC, finally to Richmond Co GA? or did he remain in Edgefield? South Carolina once encompassed parts of Richmond Co GA."

William RHOADS (Rhodes), originally had a LAND GRANT between the Tyger and Enoree Rivers that was mentioned in a transaction below:

"From Brent Holcombs Wills and Abstracts 1787-1849

 Pp. 89-92 -
Jesse Dobb of Union Co bound to Andrew Torrence of same, for 40,000 pounds of inspected tobacco, to be delivered at Mr Darby's store, 1 Dec 1792, tract of 300 acres on the ridge between Tyger and Enree rivers formerly granted to William Rhoads, 24 Aug 1770.... etc"

Below was extracted from Deeds of Union Co, by Brent Holcomb:

B, 298-301: Lease and release. 29 Jan 1776,
Wm Rhodes and Elizabeth his wife of Tyger River of South Caroline, cooper, to Jesse Dodd of Enoree River in provice aforesaid, for L500 current money of SC, 300 acres in Craven County on a ridge between Tyger and Enoree rivers, granted 24 Aug 1770. William Rhodes (W) (Seal), Elizabeth Rhodes (X) (Seal), Wit: Thos Dod, Jno Rhodes, Zilphe Linch (X). Proved by the oath of Jno Rhodes in Union County 25 Dec 1789 before Thos Brandon, J. P. Recorded 30 Dec 1789.

NOTE: Part of Craven Co SC, later became Union Co SC

NOTES:
This Wm Rhodes above, is probably related to our line some way, but obviously the 1834 records are not our Wm., as he died 1788.  Our Wm lived in Union Co, had land along the Tiger River, and was said to have lived in Edgefield, but this is not verified.  Parts of Edgefeild were once part of the Georgia Counties, Richmond Co GA. where our Rhodes line was settled, a part of it was also, once part of Edgefield, so this Wm Rhodes may be connected to our lineage.

Notes:  Remember this was written 1901, the author at this time didn't have access to
the expanse of communications that we have today. His world basically,
was within the confines of Hephzibah GA, and family records and tails.

'A LOST ARCADIA'
LEWIS'S FAMILY as described in  'A LOST ARCADIA' by Walter A. Clark
(Page 45 - 46)

LEWIS B. RHODES.
" Lewis B., son of John, was born March 10, 1778. Where this event occurred, whether "mostly" in Richmond or "mostly" in some other county, who John was, where he came from or where he went to, either in this world or the next, I am not advised. As Johns of the Rhodes name were not as common as John Smiths in his "Story of Georgia and Her People," it is probable that Lewis was a son of this Revolutionary John, who seems to have been a cousin of Aaron, Absalom and Nancy. The first authentic information I have been able to gather of Lewis after the incident of his birth is that he married Mary White, Feb. 5, 1810. Some years after his marriage he bought from some Stringfellow, William probably, what has been known for so many years as the Old A. W. Rhodes Home in Hephzibah. Here were born to him the following children: John R., who married Araminty Haynie, Absalom W. , who married Susan C White, Thomas R., who married Maria Watson and afterwards Sarah A. Pardue. Val W. Rhodes, who married Mary G. Fox and afterwards Margaret M. Jones, Mary B., who married W. W. Walker, Tilman W., who married Sarah R. Wolfe, James William, Lewis Allen, Lewis Bobo, William Peyton and Hiram James. I find from entries in the Old Lewis Rhodes Bible that in 1820 Matilda Rhodes was married to Thomas Hatcher, and in 1821 Mernemia Rhodes was married to Thomas Marshall Ligon, Matilda and Mernemia were evidently daughters of John and sisters of Lewis. I have no information as to the descendants of John R., if any.

To Absalom W. were born Robert L., James W., Harriet (Byne) (Murrow), Martha (Kuhn), Charles J., Margaret and Mary. Charles J. and Harriet Murrow are living at Blythe, GA,  and Martha (Kuhn) in Texas. Fannie Wilder, daughter of Robert L., lives in Atlanta, and a son of James W. in New Jersey.

To Thomas R., by his first marriage were born Mary (Watson), George Crawford and Henry A. Rhodes.

The last named enlisted in Confederate service as a member of the Richmond Hussars at the age of severteen, and was killed at Barbee's Cross Rhodes, VA., Nov. 5, 1862. By his second marriage there came to Thomas R. three children, Henry who died in boyhood, Sarah A. (Pardue) and Anne May, who married W. C. Boykin, and who with her husband and Harriet, Grace and Annie, her children, now live in Augusta, the eldest Rhodes Boykin being engaged in the lumber industry elsewhere. Thomas R. merchandised very successfully for a long time in the store now occupied by A. B. Saxon & Bro. The writer once served with him on the Board of Jury Commissioners and recalls the following incident of that service. In our examination of the list, whose fitness for jury service was to be a young man who in his physical makeup had developed some of the characteristics of a dude. As his name was announced Thomas R. said: "Pass him, he isn't fit for jury duty. He always wears his coats either too long or too short," and he was passed.

To Val W. Rhodes were born Thomas V. W., now living in Texas, Wallace, who died in Atlanta, and Jennie, who married Jno. W. Brown, local manager of the W. U. Telegraph Co. Henry C. Brown, manager of the Interstate Cotton Oil Co., Augusta, and the Postal Telegraph Co., are children of John W. and Jennie Brown.

Hiram Rhodes, son of Thomas R., married in Jonesboro, GA., and his children are now living there.

**There is a chapter on Absalom and Aaron Rhodes, Uncles to our Lewis.  The Rhodes family is referred to through-out the entire book, many descendant lineages also listed in detail, very valuable, for any Rhodes reseacher, of this lineage.**

Notes from Mike White:

Note at first Mary says "My Four Children; Hiram, Permela, Matilda, Merneme", later,
says, "My Four Daughters; Salley, Permela, Matilda, Mernema"...

Salley, was a step child from Lewis's 1st marriage to Elizabeth Bobo, also, note
that Lewis Rhodes nor Bixam Rhodes are mentioned... they were also from the 1st
marriage.  It may be that Bixam had moved away, and Lewis was living in
Richmond Co GA.  Originally, in the custody litigation after John died, Sarah requested
to live with Absalom Rhodes, she may have later moved to Union Co to be with her
step Mother and sisters, or Mary just wanted to remember her in her Will, Lewis was
already living on his own when his father died, and may not have staid in touch with
his Step mother and sisters and Mary chose not to remember him in her Will.

Also note our other relatives involved in this, The Will of Mary; Bird Murphy, Wm
White, Kindred Bobo...  Family taking care of Family...
