1752 - British Empire (all Colonies, etc.) change
their Calendar, dropping 11 dayss off September 1752

Calendar (New Style) Act of 1750

This has an important impact on our Genealogy Records: Deeds, Births, Deaths, Grave stones, etc.

Robert White Sr. is over 95% English (via DNA)

Six and a half million Britons went to bed on September 2, 1752, and woke up on September 14.
The reason? The
Calendar (New Style) Act of 1750.

Did word get to America? Were our descendants educated enough to understand the change and impact on their lives?

Date discrepancies, we modern day researchers may have, might have been caused by this time shift...?

http://mentalfloss.com/article/51370/why-our-calendars-skipped-11-days-1752

And what’s more, it goes back 170 years prior to 1752.

In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII was 10 years into his reign as leader of the Catholic church. He had a problem with Easter. The Julian calendar that the church (and large swaths of the world) used at the time measured a year as 365 days and 6 hours long.

That’s close, but not quite right. The average length of a year is 365 days, 5 hours and 49 minutes. The 11 minutes difference might not seem like all that much, but compounded over 1300 years, it begins to add up. So on February 24, 1582, Pope Gregory XIII released a papal bull—a declaration from the leader of the Catholic church—decreeing that those under the dominionship of his church would have to skip some days. Spain, large parts of Italy (which was not yet unified), the Netherlands, France, Portugal, Luxembourg, and Poland and Lithuania (who were at the time tied under a commonwealth) all adopted Gregory’s bull that year.

Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary, and Prussia all followed in the next 50 years, so that large parts of Europe were now ticking off days on their shiny new Gregorian calendars.

Land of Hope and Glory

Britain (England until 1707) was a holdout. It had a large empire, and enough power to feel like it didn’t immediately need to cop to the Catholic calendar (bear in mind, too, that when Gregory made his switch, England’s church was only 50 years out from a nasty split with the Catholic church). But it all got rather confusing: People often headed up letters they wrote with two dates—one using the new Gregorian calendar in fashion in mainland Europe, and the other using the old-fashioned Julian calendar.

Eventually, Britain capitulated and instigated its Calendar (New Style) Act of 1750. Within the legislation, the government admitted that the old-style calendar had caused “divers inconveniences, not only as it differs from the usage of neighbouring nations, but also from the legal method of computation in Scotland, and from the common usage throughout the whole kingdom, and thereby frequent mistakes are occasioned in the dates of deeds and other writings, and disputes arise therefrom.

“In and throughout all his Majesty’s dominions and countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, belonging or subject to the crown of Great Britain,” the act continued, “the second day of September in the said year one thousand seven hundred and fifty-two inclusive; and that the natural day next immediately following the said second day of September shall be called, reckoned, and accounted to be the fourteenth day of September, omitting for that time only the eleven intermediate nominal days of the common calendar.”

The Final Holdouts

And so, with that act of Parliament, Britain (and its colonies) joined most of the rest of Europe in using the Gregorian calendar. September 3 through September 13 were skipped altogether for 1752, and life went on. Despite what some people say, there was little backlash from the public.

Britain wasn’t the last holdout for the new form of calendar, either—not by a long shot. Russia didn’t change over until 1918. Greece refused to switch until 1923. By then the synchronisation had become so bad that the two countries needed to skip 13 days, rather than 11. It’s one of the only ways that people can skip forward in time until we invent the time machine.

A Marriage before Mildred?   -   A Case is made!

This has to be mentioned here... in 1776, Robt Sr., is 33 years old, that may be an age a male
would marry today, but not in 1700's.  It is possible, and highly likely, that our Robt. had a marriage
prior to 1775, or prior to marrying Milly and further, there may have been children from that marriage.
Lets speculate, that he married about 1763 or 1764, had several children, say 3 between 1764 and 1775,
likely more, those children would be 09, 11, 13 by 1775, by the time Robert moved to SC in 1788, all three
would be of age to marry and live on their own.  They may have chosen to stay in North Carolina,
some may have migrated west from NC, or lived among the many 'other' White's of Union County SC.
Still others may have died young or died during the Revolutionary War. There was a Moses White and
wife in attendance at the Padgett's Creek Baptist, in the 1790's, and other unknown White's close to our
Robert. For those familiar with  the Isaac P Murphy Letters, might ask, why didn't Isaac mention this... ?
Well, Isaac wasn't born until 1797, and may not have remembered or ever known they existed, further
Isaac was in his late 80's when he wrote his letter about his grandfathers family.  However, if you
consider 7 or 8 years indentured or apprenticed to learn the Blacksmith trade, and at least 4 years
time spent as a Blacksmith Journeyman before setting up his own shop, or partnering, then marrying at
33yrs could be reasonable. He was married by 1775, and during the Revolutionary War.

Milly born 1745 ! - A factual discussion...

I do NOT believe MILDRED WHITEHEAD WHITE was born in 1745, otherwise it is to say,
she had her last child at 55 years old, not to many women even lived this long in the 1700's, and
as others believe, she had passed her child bearing years, though it is possible. NOW, the
1800
Census shows Milly between 26 - 45
years old, say we take 45yrs as her age in 1800, well that makes
her at least 10 years younger. Whitehead researchers say she was born about 1763, Milly was the
oldest child, the next child, Lousia was born about 1765, both mentioned in their fathers Will.
Most of the White's as well as most other men married woman much younger than themselves, in the
1700/1800's.  Women of the time often fudged on their ages for obvious & various reasons.   My
personal belief is Milly was born in the early 1760's,  and was the daughter of William Whitehead Sr.,
who died in Laurens Co SC 1805, mentions 'Milla White' in his Will. The known 2nd marriage of Robt Sr
to Elizabeth bears out the tradition of marrying much younger women, Elizabeth was born between
1760/1770, again a women at about 20 years his youth. At the Padgett's Creek Baptist Church in
Union Co SC, a picture hangs, allegedly, Robt Sr and 2nd Wife, though it may be Robt Jr and his
2nd wife Susan, anyway, this lady is obviously 'very' much younger than Robt Sr.

Note:  Milly's father William Whitehead lived in Granville Co NC, Goshen District at least from 1769? to 1778,
Near the TAR River that went through that part of Granville.  There is also a Robert White just north
of Wm Whitehead in County (Country) Line District 1778
(upper left against old Caswell Co NC (pre-1791),
and Halifax  and Mecklenburg Co's VA (Roanoke River thru Mecklenburg) just across the border on the VA side.)
Both Robert White and Wm Whitehead were living up against old Caswell Co NC, Wm Whitehead moved
to Caswell 1778, Robert may have been in the War at that time, and joined them in 1781 on Hogon's Creek
Caswell Co NC, where he is recorded with 342 acres.  Robert is 2 farms from Wm Whitehead, on Hogan's Creek
Per Isaac Murphy letter 1871, ..."Grandfather (Robt White) was born near Roanoke River VA and lived a time
on the TAR River NC. This makes it possible that Robert White Sr married Milly at her fathers place or church
in that area, at or about 1775, in Granville Co NC? Robt may have been living with Wm Whitehead or Milly and
the children were with her father while Robert was in service from 1775 to 1781. Might also add, that Wm
Whitehead now of Caswell Co NC, was growing corn and is recorded providing provisions for the War effort.

Comments from Cousin Steve Clarke a descendant of BF White:

On Robert White's marrage, he came of age at the end of the French and Indian War so he could have been off to war & didn't marry until after it. Also he had a skilled trade, blacksmithing. Unless his father was also a blacksmith, Robert would have been apprenticed or indentured to learn his trade. His contract may have not let him marry until he finished his training. Third he may have been married to Millie and their first children died young or were miscarriages or stillbirths and buried in Virginia or North Carolina and the children born later didn't know about them. The children are the ones that put the information in the Bibles.

This is only a discussion expressing my views, could be Milly was the only wife of Robt Sr
until 1807, maybe the Census was wrong in 1800, and Wm Whitehead may not be related...

White's & Relatives Deed Index Bowie Co TX

Note:
In 1889 the entire records of Bowie County were destroyed in a fire, some relatives re-filed their deeds, some had been copied by the Texarkana Title Comapny, now Stewart Title, prior to the fire, the above Index entries are linked to some of the surviving deed copies or transcripts, some I just haven't found yet, others are lost forever, the Deed Index, much of which is from Stewart Titles, Ann Hale Survey, may be the only surviving record of a relatives ownership, providing Stewart Title has a copy of sorts, these are exceptable, in court, under a special law passed in Texas, as proof of ownership.
