Isaac Murphy Letter February 25th, 1886

Paragraph, about Elias White's Family:

"Elias White was born Oct 8th, 1799 married Anna Gibbs
had numerous family of children some of whom married and
died himself and balance of his family moved to Texas he
died August 2nd 1873."

Census age 1850 Elias = 52 TX
Census age 1860 Elias = 62 TX
Census age 1870 Elias = 72 TX

Interpretation of the Isaac Murphy Letter 1886:

1. The Letter confirms Elias's marriage to Anne Gibbs
2. Confirms some of Elias's children married & possibly died in SC.
Sarah White that married Jeremiah Bobo, died in Union Co SC,
Jerry 2nd married Elias's daughter Hester White in Bowie Co TX,
I believe Sarah White is the daughter of Elias & Anne.
(see 1830 census)
3. This also raises the possibility that other children of Elias died in SC,
    maybe
Nathan Monroe died in TX, also see the Unknown Children list.

Why did Elias migrate from South Carolina to Texas?

In the book, "Narrative History of Union County SC", presents a possible reason.

"In 1846 the Lock-Keeper's salary was reduced from $200 to $160 per year, in order to cut expenses. Because of a POOR COTTON CROP that year, the canal had taken in only $125 in tolls".

Cotton was the main cash crop for Union County, the Lock's allowed passage of cotton carrying boats, to move the product to the markets. The locks were shut down completely by the end of 1850. I might add that the Iron belly of the Railroad began to rumble, and the Lock's were bound to close anyway...

Elias left SC in 1846, arriving in Mooresville, later named Ingersol, & lastly, as most of us today recognize, Redwater Bowie County Texas, probably late 1846 or early 1847 (his 1st tax poll), in what would become a cotton producing area of Texas.  It is worthy to note North East Texas probably looked a lot like home in South Carolina, lush Pine Forest, Creeks & Rivers, plenty of game and fishing, and few settlers. It must have reminded Elias of the early days of Union Co SC, before it became over run with settlers. Also, mentioned in the book is, "the soils of Union County had been pretty well depleted for cotton growing, of course this was a time before fertilizers."

Land was most likely, the main motivation for migrating to Texas.  Elias made a grand leap moving form SC to TX, in those days, most moved State by State, Indians were still hostile into the 1840's & 1850's, and the Mexican American War was coming to a closure, but for the brave,  land in Texas was cheap, and abundant. Elias, as most families did, remained with his parents, in SC, until their decease, his father died at 100 yrs old, otherwise, I guess Elias would have migrated long before, Robert White Sr gave Elias 120 acres of land in 1824, no doubt to encourage him to remain in SC. But there were no fertilizers in those days and land was good for about 6 or 7 years, then had to lay-fallow for some years to re-gain its productivity, most farmers moved to greener pastures...  120 acres was not a lot of land, if one is farming to feed a family, provide them income, and to market, for a better life.  In Bowie Co TX, Elias was able to amass about 2000 acres, at his peak, this would have provided well for the family and the future of his children, and as, we have discovered, his grand children, whose lives were improved from their inheritance, of their grandfathers lands, even great grandchildren, benefitted.

Family lore has it, that Elias's original destination was Houston Co TX, to meet up with his brother Stephen White, who arrived in Texas January 1836, settling in an area then called Mustang Prairie, later Houston County, not to be confused with Houston TX in Harris Co.  Stephen was a soldier in the war for Texas Independence, and service in the Texas Rangers who protected settlers from the Indian conflicts, It is fortunate for us, Elias remained in Bowie County, otherwise, history would have taken a different path... A hint that may support the "Original Destination as Houston Co TX family lore", was in Lewis Bobo, the son of Solomon Jr & Elizabeth [White] Bobo, (Elias's sister), who arrived with the 1st wagon train in 1846 (Tax polls), with Ben White, his cousin, he was living with Sarah Nix (1850), our 3xgreat grandmother, and mother of Polly Nix White, wife of Ben White, over in the Rea River community, on the Texarkana AR side of the border. Lewis's last Bowie Co Tax poll was 1853, in 1860 Lewis was living in Houston Co TX, where his uncle, Stephen White lived, brother of Elias, and several 1st cousins, Lewis married about 1855, and had 5 children, unfortunately, it appears he died during the Civil War, possibly between 1864/65, Lewis was with the 6th Battalion, Cavalry (Gould's Battalion; 3d Battalion, Cavalry), enlisted at Crockett Texas Houston Co.  This is the only record I have to suggest that Elias's original destination, was indeed, Houston Co TX... and the fact that his brother was farming in that county with over 5,000 acres of land, he had lands in Houston Co, Walker Co, Anderson Co and a large tract in Kaufman Co TX, Walker & Anderson were formed from old Houston Co.

And of course we cannot rule out just, 'PLAIN-OLE-ADVENTURE',
as the reason Elias migrated to Texas... However, as evidence indicates
Elias's son, Ben, arrived a year before, 1846, and Elias following in 1847...

In 1840, it appears Jurusha and Sarah & Ben or L L, left home?
** Jerusha White - married Cooper Wilbanks in 1834.
** Sarah A White could be living with husband Jeremiah Bobo
they offically married  1841, as there were no marriage records
required, at this time in SC, is possible they were together bef 1840?

Note:
From these two census records above, we know there had to be three more unknown children.
We speculate at least two other children were born between 1810 & 1825. One possible name is
Russia White, who was received at the Lower Fairforest Baptist Church, exactly the same day as
Elias and Anne White, 25 August 1832. Russia was dismissed 25 Jan 1834, now named
Russia Wilbanks.  A descendant of Russia, Johnita Malone, is still trying to make this connection.
Another unknown could be Sarah Ann White, who married Jeremiah Bobo before Elias's dau, Hester.
The other child (male) could have had the initials of L. L. or J. L. and may be buried at Creed Cemetery.

NOTES: Elias was blind the last four years of his life (from census) and living with Daughter Susan Creed.

Elias bought his land, was one of the original settlers in the Redwater area.
The name Redwater came into being 1894, until this time the area Elias
lived was called MOORESVILLE, after Charles Moore's, this family had received
several thousand acres of Land Grants in this area.

Same documentation states Mooresville & Ingersol  became what is now called
Redwater TX, in 1894, by public vote.  Though I am told Ingersol is not connected
to Redwater or Mooresville, but a separate community.

Tax Records for Elias showed at his peak he owned over 1800 acres.
The Bowie County Court house was destroyed by fire and not all of the deeds
survived.  The Title company of the time was said to have copied many of the deeds
and thus, today we do have some surviving land records, that will hold up in court.
Folks were still filing land records 50 years after the fire.

Rev. John Gibbs Bible Record
(Brother of our Anne Gibbs White)

Go to Gibbs Web Page

Provided by: Martha Cummings

Only proof that our Anne was part
of the Zach Gibbs family, listing her
Parents and siblings, a family treasure

(John did not list any of the male Spouses surnames that married his sisters)

Compiled by John Gibbs: April 2nd, 1848

Notes:

The Rev. John Gibbs was a close neighbor of Elias White
in Union Co SC.  The Gibbs family has been documented
in books, such as the Southern Family Series, but is frought
with mistakes, even leaving out Zach and Sarah's three
oldest children, the daughters.  Until this bible record was
found, we had only the fact that the family lived next to
the Gibbs in SC, as proof, we now know for sure, Anne
was a member of this family, and the names and dates
of her parents and siblings.

Mrs. Cummings came upon the record via another source,
she was not at liberty to provide. The record is without a
fly or bible cover sheet, was discovered by a family in
Tennessee, going through old records, in an attic.  This
mystery may never be solved.  There must have been
more to this bible record, I am sure, because, we are
missing the Bible record portion that contains Rev John
Gibbs, family itself.

Anne Gibbs White's other brother, Churchwell Gibbs,
is the only other bible I know of, it is listed in the South
Carolina Bible records book, but contains only his immediate
family and mother.

The family cannot express its appreciation enough to
Mrs. Martha Cummings, for this record, and her willingness
to share,  On behalf of the entire White Family - Thank You.
