James Browning (7 yrs)
b. abt. 1843 SC  d. Unkn.

He was the brother of his oldest sibling
Nancy Browning White wife of James White
1850 - he is living with sister  Nancy's family in SC
1860 - James is living with Nancy's daughter Milly
Lawson family now living in Nacogdoches Co TX.
Have not located him after 1860... There is the
possibility that James moved back to SC with
his sister Nancy Browning White?

On 1860 Census Nacogdoches TX

James White

We now know that James White the son of Wm White, decd., lived in Union, he is listed in
the 1840 and 1850, he has been found on two Deeds transactions thus far, with his father
and mother and Uncle Elias involved among the two deeds.  His neighbor John Gibbs, the
brother our Elias White's wife, Anne Gibbs White, also signs his fathers deed as witness.
Note worthy to mention that Deed2 is between Wm White and Johnson Coggins his son-in-law,
brother-in-law to James White.

The census bares out the correct age (1803).  His children are named after his Grandmother, and
sisters and aunts.  If the 1860 can be found may add additional support, might show his father born
in NC... this would further support these findings.

Update:
The 1860 has been found, the family is living in Nacogdoches Co TX. Nancy is there but
not James, 3 of their children are also there, Milly, Mary, John.  The girls are married to
Lawson's from Union Co SC.  See the Census below for 1860.  Have not resolved this yet...

This discovery raises the possibility that James died in one of three places: Union Co SC,
on the Migrations trail to Texas, or Nacogdoches Co TX.  Nancy his wife, is on the 1860
in TX, this may be the reason she returned to Union Co SC, and in time to be recorded
on the 1860, in Union Co SC, in the household of her daughter, Susan White Byars, she
is also on the 1870, 1880, still living with Susan, and passes away after 1880.

As there were several James White's, in Union County, we will be interested in one that was born
1803, the oldest son of William & Elizabeth.  And we now know he lived in Union County at
least from 1830 to 1850.  After his fathers death, in 1829, he may have remained in SC, for a time.
He was about 26 years old at the time of his fathers death.

There was a letter written by Jason Wiley Murphy (cousin), whereby, he mentions the names of
William Sr's children, however, NO JAMES is mentioned?.  Being this letter was written
1870's, and James signed the deed in 1829, it is possible Mr. Murphy had forgotten this
White.  I say this because James White is mentioned in Isaac Murphy's letter, brother of
Jason Murphy, in the 1886 letter prior to Isaac's death, grandson of Robert White Sr.

A marriage reference was found, dated Dec 9th 1831:  "Cash paid JAMES WHITE in right
of his wife Nancy --- $100.00.   This was in the Estate Records of Thomson Browning,
the father of Nancy Browning above, who was married to James White, we know from the
1850 census, that this is in fact the same James, who was born 1803, according to the census.

August 30, 1848:

Sep 26, 1851:
Granted a Letter of dismission to Sister Milly Lawson (White)

Note from Mike:
These church minutes may not be our White's,
but worthy of noting, as could be the wife and
a daughter of James White, there is a Jas, and
J., and a J. C. White in attendance at this church.
The family of James White is on the 1850 census.
So the above minutes fall within the range of the
families presence in Union Co SC.

1850 Union Co SC Census (ancestry image page 46)
ED date 26 Aug 1850 by Johnson

James White 46 M Carpenter SC
Nancy          38 F                  SC
Mildred        20 F                  SC
Mary            07 F                 SC
Susan           05 F                 SC
John         3/12 M                 SC
Living in same household:
James Browning 07 M          SC

Notes from Mike:
This James was the only one listed on the 1850
in Union Co SC, was listed in the index as James Whise,
after comparing this census takers 'T's with his 'S's it is
absolutely clear, the surname is White not Whise.

Note the children's names, Mildred, Mary, Susan, John
all names in Robert White Sr.'s Family, and his sisters.

Compare the 1840 with the 1850, they appear to be the same
person, at least in the same age bracket.

The Mildred White 20 years is the oldest child of James.
James marriage at 25 or 26 years old.  We know that in 1829
James is living near, as he is involved in two Deed transactions
before his fathers death in 1829.  Last Deed being recorded in
1830.

In 1850, the only White's left in Union Co are James, Aunt Susan
White Murphy, living in Union, and his first cousin Nancy White
Murphy, also in Union Co, with James, over in Spartanburg, is James,
Uncle Robert White Jr. Of course his sisters, were living in Spartanburg;
Sarah, Jane, Lucy, Elizabeth, Rachel and Susan, his brother Samuel.
William is a mystery and so is Robert, if he even existed, have seen no
evidence of a Robert White in Wm White's family, Wm moved to GA.

If indeed James White was married in 1826'ish, it is possible there
were other children, and by 1850, they would have been of age to
be living on their own, one child, on James 1850 census is listed
as a James BROWNING 10yrs, he is the youngest brother of Nancy,

Also note the John Gibbs, listed in Deed2 below, is living a few doors
from James White in 1840 and 1850, this is Rev. John Gibbs, the brother
of Anne Gibbs White who married James, Uncle Elias White.  We know
for sure the Deed 1 and 2 is our James, the son of Wm White, Deed2
James signs the Deed and his mother Elizabeth is named on this deed also.
Now, need to locate James or Nancy in 1860.

In 1860, Nancy and 3 of her children are living in Nacogdoches Co TX,
two of her daughters are married to Lawson's from Union Co SC, and
along with brother John White, and Nancy's youngest brother James Browning.

Milly below, is daughter of James & Nancy White
her Brother John is living with her at 10yrs old.
Currently, I do not have a lot of information on
this Lawson family.

Note: Milly's brother is 10yrs old born SC, her
2 children born in TX at 5 and 2yrs old, there
may have been a stop in MS, it appears they
arrived in TX about 1855?

** I believe Nancy White may have arrived with husband James White in Texas, and he may have died, 'theory'.
Nancy then returned to SC, in time to be recorded on the 1860 census, in Union Co SC, living with Daughter Susan White Byers...

Lawson Researchers Letter who found the Lawson's in Texas,  28 Jul 2022

Hi, I saw your post on James White's Find a Grave memorial. I was researching my Lawson family from Union Co., SC and found some White connections. Apparently, James White died before 1860 as his wife, Nancy, is living with her daughter, Mildred "Milly" White Lawson, and her husband Isaac Lawson in
(Note:1860 Census says Nancy Lawson NOT Nancy White could be a mistake? 1870 Nancy White is living with daughter Susan White Byers, in Union Co SC, they also left off the "ing" in Brown, as in James Browning, who was on the 1850 census with James White's family in Union Co SC)  Linn Flats, Nacogdoches, Texas in the 1860
census. Also, present in 1860 are her son, John White, and nephew, James Browning. Isaac's two brothers, Elijah and Scion, and their families are also living in the same place, apparently next door to one another. Elijah Lawson is married to Mary White. Isaac and Elijah Lawson married the two White sisters, Mildred and Mary. So, the Civil War begins and Isaac is enlisted in the CSA. He never returns and is presumed dead; oral history states he died in Arkansas. Isaac's widow, Mildred, leaves Texas to live with Isaac's older brother, Levi Lawson (my ggg grandfather) in Buena Vista, Chickasaw Co., MS. Her two daughters and younger brother, John White, go with her, along with Isaac's younger brother, Elijah Lawson and his wife, Mary White Lawson. The migration must have been mid-1860's. Oral history states that Mildred White Lawson died along the way, probably Louisiana, and her mother, Nancy Browning White, is not in any records afterwards as the same for the nephew, James Browning. Elijah and Mary Lawson adopt Isaac and Mildred's two daughters; they never have any biological children. John White also lives with Elijah and Mary Lawson, in the 1870 census of Chickasaw Co., MS. Obviously, they were successful getting to Mississippi and settling down and buying a farm. Things seem to go better for the family. Elijah and Mary live into the 1920's, and both the adopted girls get married and have families. John White also does well and gets married and has a family. Many of their descendants are still in the area. There was another brother in Texas, Scion Lawson, who leaves before 1870 to Arkansas. His wife was not a White.

My idea is that the three brothers, Isaac, Elijah and Scion Lawson, moved together to Texas between 1851 and 1853 based on marriage records. Isaac and Mildred are married in SC in 1851. Scion and Elijah are married in TX in 1853 and 1856, respectively. I don't have any records about whether Nancy White, John White and James Browning went on the original migration, SC to TX, with the Lawson brother's but they were there in 1860 living with Isaac Lawson whose wife was a White and were very likely in TX by 1853-1855. So, who knows for sure. But in summary, Mildred White Lawson died between 1865-1870 during the migration, Mary White Lawson and John White made it Chickasaw Co., MS, and the mother Nancy White is almost certainly dead by 1870. Hope that helps to round out that part of your White research.

The Susan (White) Byars and Nancy White
the daughter and wife of James White.

The 1860/70 and 1880 below are more for the record, though it appears to be
our Susan and Nancy from the 1850, the age of Susan is a problem, when
compared to the 1850... unless they made her older... as was common to
marry women very young... The 1860, if it should be determined to be our
James White's wife and daughter, means that he would have died between
1850 and 1860.   Need to do more on this ...

James Brown          18 SC Day Labor              (should be James Browning, living with White's on 1850 Census above)
Nancy Lawson        68 SC  (not Lawson is Nancy White mother of Milly Lawson, age is incorrect)

** Note here that Nancy White is also living with daughter Susan White Byars back in Union Co SC, on the 1860, 1870, 1880 Census.**
** My guess is Nancy White was initially with James White, her husband, and he died, either on the way to Texas, or Nacogdoches or SC?
I would guess TX, and this was the reason she returned to SC, to live with her daughter Susan and be with her Browning family.
Again, if James died in SC, then Nancy migrated with her daughters families to Texas... and then decided to return to Unoin Co SC?
and is recorded, also, on the 1860 census, in Union Co SC, living with Daughter Susan White Byers, 1860, 1870, 1880...died after 1880.

***The Nacogdoches Original copy of 1860 census has many errors above***

Notes:
Interesting Susan, 34 and Nancy White 59, is a perfect
match, as Daughter and Mother.  It is possible James died
after the 1850, He would have been much to old
to fight in the Civil War, but worthy to check anyway. He
would have been 63 in 1860.  He may have died elsewhere,
and Nancy returned to Union??? many possibilities will
explore over time...

**Comment:
Note both Joseph and Susan are born the same year 1833? at this time
it was rare for a man to marry a woman of the same age, my theory is
they Married when Susan was 15 or 16 years old, and as women did
at this time, lied about their age, to appear older, I believe this to the the
case here, Susan was 5yrs old in 1850. The Nancy White living with them
fits PERFECTLY with Nancy [Browning] White, wife of James. I believe
James died between 1850 and 1860, in Union Co SC, Joseph Byars was
living in Union Co at that time. Need to review the 1840 to see where the
Byars, were living in relation to James White. I would bet he's in the
Neighborhood, as folks usually, married folks living close.

Note:
James White was related to the Bullington's & Greer's via his families marriages.

Note:
This deed tells us a bunch, of course Wm White, James White's father
had died before it was filed, best of all, Elias White, his uncle witnesses
and signs this deed.  Bicey Bullington was the wife of John Bullington,
who died 1818, he may possibly be related to John Bullington who married
Milly White, their is much controversy over who John's father was, some
say he was the son of Robert Bullington, others this John Bullington who
died in 1818, a mystery to be solved... I suspect John & Mildred had
already moved to Lauderdale Co AL, by the time of this Deed.

Old Browning Farm

Marilin R. Howell

Carl D. Howell

The ancestors of the Browning family moved from Union County, S.C., around 1835 to Gibson County, which was formed in 1823. Matthew “Matt” Raleigh Browning and wife Susan Springer, whose parents and grandparents also moved from Union County, S.C., to Gibson County around 1825, were the parents of seven children.

According to the history of the Old Browning Place Farm, Matt purchased 51 ¼ acres in 1873, where the family raised sheep, cattle, mules and horses. Matt was especially known for his registered saddle and harness horses.  Browning also had a thriving business renting mules for cotton planting. These mules were bred from wild Texas ponies, which he purchased and that came to Milan by train and were raised on open range among the cane breaks along the Obion and Mississippi River Bottoms in Dyer County. The family has documented many family stories of the founding couple as well as succeeding generations.

Matt and Susan’s son, Samuel Spencer Browning, acquired the property after the death of his father in 1912. He and his wife, Audrey Lee, had one daughter, Martha Katherine Browning Newbill.

Today, Martha’s daughter, Marilin Rose Newbill Howell, the great-granddaughter of the founders, is the farm’s current owner. The property is leased by the family to Philip Crocker, who raises corn, soybeans and timber. The family also reported that a large spring known as Browning Springs has furnished fresh water for travelers, livestock and the people who lived on the farm throughout the years.

Gibson County

Gibson County was established in 1823 and named in honor of Colonel John H. Gibson, who served under Andrew Jackson in the Natchez campaign, the Creek Wars, and the New Orleans campaign. The county seat is Trenton, and it is the home of the world’s largest collection of Veilleuse-Thieres porcelain pieces. The county is also home to the West Tennessee Strawberry Festival that has been held in Humboldt since 1934. In addition, Gibson County has the restored last Tennessee home of Davy Crockett, who lived in the county when he announced his candidacy for his term in the U. S. House of Representatives. Gibson County has thirty-one Century Farms and the oldest are Alvin Smith Farm and WBY Farm, both founded in 1827.

History of High Shoals Baptist Church
HIGH SHOALS CHURCH...................(Rutherford Co. NC), This church is
between Ellenboro and Cliffside, NC.

While considering the geographical aspects of the community, it is interesting to note

one
physical feature of the land, which was of great importance to the settlers and to the church
soon to be birthed. Oral tradition tells us that at a point on the Second Broad River, where
the Henrietta dam is now located, there was an area of rocky shoals in the water, with perhaps
one group or possibly even one shoal being larger and higher than the others. It is believed
that the High Shoal Baptist Church obtained its name from being located near this shoal.
