 Tribute to Louisa               UP^

Students of Louisa A Barnett, had this printed
in the Carolina Spartan, in Tribute to Louisa.

Tribute of Respect 'Carolina Spartan'
Dated: 9-17-1857, Page 2

"At a meeting of the pupils of Woodland School
House, near Hill's Factory, Spartanburg District,
held on the 11th instant, the following preamble
and resolutions were unanimously adopted:

Whereas it has pleased the despair of all event's,
by a wise dispensation of his Providence, to remove
from amongst us our friend and instructress, Miss
LOUISA A. BARNETT, who was so unexpect-
edly struck down in death, and cast off from her
family, and friends, as well as her usefulness in the
neighborhood:  And whereas as a teacher she was
kind and indulgent, looking over many of our Child-
ish faults, at no time using severity, and by her kind
and amiable disposition and Christian deportment
endeared herself to ill? of us, we have the pleasant
assurance that our loss is her eternal gain, and
therefore sorrow not as those who have no hope
be it.

Resolved, That the death of Miss L. A. Bar-
nett this community has lost a useful member, the
school a kind and efficient teacher, and her parents
a devoted and affectionate daughter.

Resolved, That we deeply sympathize with the
parents and friends in their bereavement, recom-
mending them to the "Balm in Gilead and the
Physician there."

Resolved, That as a tribute to her memory, we
wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days.

Resolved, That a copy of the above be sent to
each of the District papers for publication, and also
one to the family of the deceased.

Notes:

There is no doubt that Javan & Rachel White were married, equally,
confirmed is Javan's Parents and Siblings.  Rachel White's Parents &
Siblings have not been established beyond a doubt.  We believe she is
the daughter of our William White, sister to Sarah, Jane and Susan White,
they all lived in close proximity in Spartanburg, have common relatives
at the same cemetery.  The age of Rachel is within the range we had
established for her.  They were living very close to Robert White Jr., her
Uncle.  They named a daughter SUSAN JANE Barnett, which could be
after her sisters, and a daughter was named Sarah, possibly after her oldest
sister, they named a daughter ELIZABETH FRANCES Barnett, most likely
after Rachel's mother or sister, Elizabeth Boatman White, and Frances after
Javan's mother, Frances White Barnett, a son is named WILLIAM, after
Rachel's father...

OBITUARY

Died on the 6th instant, at the residence of DR. F.M. TUCKER, in the lower part of the District, MISS LOUISA A. BARNETT, daughter of JAVAN and RACHEL BARNETT, in the 20th year of her age.

In noticing this sad event, we are forcibly reminded of the uncertainty
of everything that relates to mortal probation. An interesting and highly intelligent young lady, full of hopes and full of promise to herself, friends and parents, has been cut down in the bloom of youth...
She was converted in her 13th year was a zealous member of the Baptist
Church for the last 3 years of her life. She enjoyed religion much. It was to her a happy theme for conversation...

There was more to this Obiturary
but cut short...

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Historians divide Reconstruction into two periods: Presidential Reconstruction, lasting from
1865 to 1867, and Congressional Reconstruction, from 1867 to 1873. During Presidential
Reconstruction, Andrew Jackson sought to readmit the breakaway states as quickly as possible.
Using a combination of loyalty oaths, presidential pardons, and the restoration of political rights,
Jackson hoped to move rapidly beyond the rebellion and reunite the United States. The Radical
Republicans in Congress felt that the Confederate States, and their citizens, must be punished for
their secession attempt. Congress passed the Reconstruction Act of 1867, a sweeping law that
required, among other things, a new loyalty oath superseding Jackson’s previous oaths.

Reconstruction and Military Government in the South, 1867–1870, Office of Civil Affairs, Part
1: First and Second Military Districts
contains thousands of examples of this oath, The Ironclad
Oath, required of any candidate for political office in the former Confederate States. While these
personal copies of the Ironclad Oath compose the largest portion of this collection, the first eight
reels contain letters, memoranda, and applications for employment.

“The Ironclad Oath”

"I do solemnly swear that I have never voluntarily borne arms against the United
States since I have been a citizen thereof; that I have voluntarily given no aid,
countenance, counsel, or encouragement to persons engaged in armed hostility
thereto; that I have neither sought, nor accepted, nor attempted to exercise the
functions of any office whatever, under any authority, or pretended authority, in
hostility to the United States; that I have not yielded a voluntary support to any
pretended government, authority, power, or constitution, within the United States,
hostile or inimical thereto. And I do further swear that, to the best of my
knowledge and ability, I will support and defend the Constitution of the United
States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and
allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental
reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the
duties of the office on which I am about to enter; So help me God.
During Reconstruction, the former Confederate States were divided into five military
districts. The documents in this collection were received by the First and Second Military
Districts: Virginia and North/South Carolina, respectively. The first eight reels are generally
organized by county or independent city, but this organization is neither complete nor consistent.
The final eleven reels contain a wealth of information for the genealogical researcher. Organized
by state and then by county, these reels contain thousands of original, signed oaths."

Javan is mentioned in a book, "The History of Spartanburg, by J.B.O. Landrum"

Dr Landrum (page 69), speaking of the history of the South Carolina institution for the Education of the Deaf and Blind, near Cedar Springs, 4 miles south of Spartanburg, mentions that in 1824, Word Academy was erected in the grove near the Springs (this Academy was a predecessor to the institution). Among the many well - known men of the day attending the academy was Javan Barnett.

The Hunt for Javan & Rachel's Burial Site

Has finally ended

Update:

Burial site: Elmwood Memorial Gardens
Place:         Columbia Richland County SC
FindAGrave Online Memorial: Click Here

Update:  (old)

We once believed they are both buried at:

First Baptist Church Cemetery
Columbia Richland County South Carolina

"See Javan's Obituary above, they held the Service at 1st Baptist
and
"Internment at the Cemetery", I assume they meant one of
the same, meaning at this churches Cemetery.  I am assuming that
Rachel would be at the same cemetery... and Javen wanted to be
buried with her." Our best guess at this time.

I have yet to see a Buiral list at this cemetery with Javan or Rachel listed.
It will take eye-balls on the ground to check and verify.

=======================================================================

1.  1894 - Rachel died 1894, at this time they were living near or on Sumter Street in Columbia SC

2.  1900 - Javan was living with his daughter's family Wm & Alice Little. This was in Ward #2 the
census shows this area as;   ( see census records above)

     Columbia city: Ward #2 (part)
     All that part of ward bounded as follows; North by Plain St.; East by Main St.;
South by Gervais St.; West by city limits.

     Columbia city: Ward 2 (part)
     All that part of ward bounded as follows; North by Plain St.; East by city limits;
South by Gervais St.; West by * St.

3.  1901 - Javan visited his old Cedar Springs church in Spartanburg, one last time.

4.  1901 - 1910 - Javan has passed away, as well as Alice O Little's husband.  Alice lives with
two daughters and on the same property is Sarah Glass her sister and daughters.

Note:
A search for a map of Ward #2 in Columbia, and a search of Baptist Churches and there Cemeteries
etc, might net our pair of ancestors.  Obituaries of 1895 thru 1910, search of Funeral Homes in this
area would also be helpful.  Javan and some family should be found with Rachel, during these searches
it will be a good idea to also look for family members.  (on going project)

JAVAN BARNETT'S FAMILY BIBLE RECORDS\

Below an email from Laura Moore to Janel Howell:
Provided By Janel Howell

"The Original Bible was borrowed once by Laura E H Moore, to make copies,
from descendant Lucy Little, decd, the daughter of Alice Olivia Barnett Little, decd,
the daughter of Javan Barnett.

After Laura made copies she returned it to Lucy, when she died the Bible was
given to my great aunt, Jean Louditte Perkins, my grandmothers sister. When Jean
died, I tried to recover the Bible but was told it would go to Jean's son Joseph, When
Joe died I again tried to recover the Bible but was told no one knew anything about it."

BARNETT FAMILY CEMETERY - Established about 1802
Located on the main road into the Croft State Natural Area. Go 0.3 miles and look for the parking area
and picnic table on the right side of the road. The cemetery is surrounded by large rocks and fence.

Note: Some of the FindAGrave Memorials mistakenly show Cedar Springs Cemetery instead
of Barnett Cemetery, the reason, I guess, is there is no Camp Croft on FindAGrave, some
believe these 2 cemeteries are one of the same, not true, however, Frances White Barnett
has a Memorial Marker at Cedar Springs, I would assume her actual burial site is at Croft...?
note also, that Croft is a Military training base, or was...

Micajah C Barnett

Padgett's Creek Baptist Church selects M C Barnett their Pastor...

In November 1851, Padgett's Creek Church agreed to call Rev. M. C. Barnett to preach one Sunday and Saturday before in each month during the year 1852.  He accepted the call and was paid $100.00 for his service to the church that year.  The following is taken from the church minutes:

"Church in conference -- Oct. 16th 1852, After public service by Rev. Thomas Ray, proceeded to business --

2  The church agrees to call Rev. John G. Landrum to supply them one Sabbath in each month for the next year and to pah him $120.00 for his services -- And provided we cannot get him to call Rev. M. C. Barnett again for the next year and give him $120.00  The church failed to get either of the above named Ministers.

In the book, "Sketches of Broad River and Kings Mountain Association, by John R. Logan," there is a biographical sketch on Rev. M. C. Barnett, stating in part: "He was born May 20, 1818, near Cedar Springs, Spartanburg County.  Was licensed to preach the Gospel by Cedar Springs Church, November 27, 1841, and ordained March 25, 1843.  The presbytery consisted of Elders John G. Landrum, Elias Rogers and Felix W. Littlejohn.  He intermarried with Miss Nazareth Lipscomb, daughter of Edward Lipscomb, Esq., a worthy deacon of Goucher Creek Church.

His early education was limited, but, by earnest application and constant devotion to his studies, he was recognized as one of the ablest self-educated men of his day.  This, combined with his fine personal appearance and social qualities, made him attractive as a preacher and agreeable as a companion.  His council was ofter sought for by his brethren, and in his intercourse with men his aim was to instruct and benefit.

With the exception of two yeras he lived and labored within the bounds of the Broad River Association, to which he was greatly attached; for many years he was its clerk and for several its moderator, and was universally loved by the whole Association.  He supplied at different times during his ministry, Cedar Springs -- his mother church -- Philadelphia, Sulphur Springs, Gilead, Limestone, Pacoletm Shelby, Padgett's Creek, and at the time of his death he was a member and the pastor of El Bethel Church, where he had preached with aceptance and much success for three years.  He died on the 20th of September, 1872, in the town of Shelby, North Carolina.  He was laid to rest in El Bethel Church cemetery, where there is a large marker erected to his memory.

Note:
Javan, son of Micajah, was ordained a deacon at Cedar Springs, and was a deacon (ref. made), in the Church he attended in Columbia.  Javan, as his father did, returned to Cedar Springs Baptist, as a vistor, in 1898 and 1901, and lead the Prayer and Singing at its closing.  He to returned to the Church of his spawning...
