Notes from Mike:

Many thanks to Martha Cummings for sharing this valuable family record.

This record is not listed in the South Carolina Bible Records, only the Bible
of Churchwell Gibbs,  he listed only his mother Sarah Howard's birth and
death, there was no entries for his Sisters.  Brother James was mentioned,
Churchwell's family and grandchildren were recorded.

This is the only document I have seen listing the whole family, to my
knowledge, there is no cover sheet, and I do not know the originating
source, of this copy, we can start asking around, and hopefully I can
find a source, there may be more to this family record...

This record proves that Sallie was a Howard.  It confirms years of birth,
death, brother and sisters relations, and parents.   This will prove of
great value to our family research.

My 6th. letter
this morning
___________
Mt. Lebanon, LA
Sept. 9, 1839

Mr. Churchill Gibbs

Dear Cousin,

You and your cousin John have quit writing to me, and I hope
you will delay no longer.

My family and my ralatives are generally well and well to to
in life. My mother is in fine health and I am looking for her return
from a visit to Texas.

Our crops are generally good; corn however is short.
Why does not Monroe Robinson write--please write me of him,
also George Harlan, Joe Robinson, your son, and your son-in-law
and all.

Everything from there is interesting-how is William Wallace
and family?

Capt. Robert McCollough is in good health. I was to see him
and his son-in-law last Nov. They have a find farm and are making
a plenty of everything to live on and about 200 bales of cotton per
year. is son-in-law, Disthaupt (?) is a smart man and is raising and
educating a nice family.

We have a remarkable County in LA. and I would be glad to have
more of my friends and relatives here.

Excuse haste-nothing is done by me otherwise.
Kind regards to all,

Your cousin,
J. Gibbs

Zach's death appears in the book
"Historical Southern Families Vol XIII."

Zachariah's death is mentioned in the book Historical So Families vol III page 295, he was thrown from a horse and died. I have found this book was missing much information, it does not list Anna Gibbs nor sister Eleanor, but starts with Priscilla, Anna and Eleanor would have been child one and two.

Zachariah is mentioned in the Will of his father, James Gibbs:

Co. E - 7th South Carolina Cavalry Regiment

"The Southern Cross of Honor"

7th South Carolina Cavalry Regiment

At the surrender at Appomattox, the regiment consisted of 5 Field and staff-commissioned officers, 3 non-commissioned officers, 14 company officers, and 355 enlisted men for an aggregate total of 377.

The folllowing note appears in the Paroles of the Army of Northern Virginia, p. 472-3.

      Col. 7th S. C. Cav. Com'dg Birg.
      [Paroles signed by Col. Haskell.]

This document was obligingly furnished by General J. C. Kelton, Acting Adjutant and Inspector-General United States Army, Washington, D. C., being a copy of the original in his Department. A majority of the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia appear not to have been surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse. In a report of General Fitzhugh Lee, commanding the cavalry to General R. E. Lee, dated April 22, 1865, he states that Generals T. L. Rosser and T. T. Munford, commanding divisions, succeeded in cutting their way through the lines of the Federal Army, and "immediately made arrangements to continue the struggle," until the capitulation of General Johnston's army brought the convincing proof that a further resistance was useless. A printed order (No. 6), issued from near Lynchburg, Va., April 21,1865, to his command by General Munford - a copy of which is before the editor - glows with patriotic ardor and an undying spirit of resistance. General Munford, in a recent letter to the editor, states that though he was paroled about May 10, 1865, that his command were not surrendered, but were disbanded at Lynchburg and dispersed to their homes.

I estimate that the rosters below contain approximately 25% of the men who served in this regiment.
