Quoted in the book 'Historical Southern Families Vol XIII.' ( page 236)

"Immigrated to the colonies from England. He was said to be a kinsman of the Duke of Albemarle, and was to 'have every attention paid to him, and three thousand acres of land rent free."

The Gibbs Family Beginnings in Union County

The James Gibbs family came from VA to NC and then moved into SC. They built their home near the Lower Fairforest baptist Church some time before the American Revolution.
It is a family tradition that James Gibbs was the son of John Gibbs. Acoording to land grants, volume 1, in the SC archives John Gibbs received a grant of 500 acres on the Fairforest Creek in 1768, James Gibbs had a grant of 640 acres on the Fairforest in May 1772.

John Gibbs Spartanburg Deed Transaction, and
mention of his Wife Susanne

Deed Book C pp 105-107 Spartanburg Co SC son James Gibbs sold land "which was willed to him by his father, John Gibbs Sr.", as did son Philip. No will found to date (Aug 2000), but deeds in evidence in NC prior to 1771 survey, which placed much if not all of Gibbs land in SC when Carolina boundary was established.

Date of death based on last evidence of deed activity. Deeds also bear name "Susanne" as his wife (no surname).

Susanne: Spartanburg abst/Deeds by A B Pruitt lists sale of Philip Gibbs' land to Henry Ayers, saving half the land & orchard for his mother, Susanne, as" long as she pleases of lives". Deed states land was inherited from his father John Gibbs. Date: Sep 20, 1786... and son Philip had moved to Wilkes Co GA Philipe named carried to Zacharias' 2 daughters is the lone proof' of this surname to date. Spelling of name (one 'L' or two "l's"). unsure.

Mike and Marc,
I just found this in an old email file. It has a lot more detail than I
usually see in one place. Suzanne must have been going through tons of
books and documents to compile this.

Well, what a happy surprise to find some Gibbs relatives that are" alive and
well"! Philip was indeed the son of John and Susanne Gibbs. By finding his sale of
his Spartanburg, SC property after his move to GA, I was able to confirm that
John Gibb's wife was indeed Susanne. There had been a bad mix-up in another
of my S. Carolina families, the Drapers, and various compilers of books said
she was the mother of Lucy Coleman Draper. Lucy Coleman's sister, Frances,
married Philip's brother, Zacharias....so Susanne was HER mother-in-law. I
almost gave a shout in the library of SC when I found her named in that deed
of Philip's a few years ago.  I'm attaching the very little I have on the earlier Gibbs family. There is a 2 volume book 'From Castle to Country' rather recently published about the US
Gibbs families. Most of my Gibbs relatives accept the genealogy as given in
the book, which more or less assumes we spring from John Gibbs of Jamestown.
A group of Gibbs also spent time in England with Gibbs people and visited
the churchyards, crypts etc. of even earlier Gibbs. I can't explain why I
have this big question mark in my head about the connection to John Gibbs of
Jamestown....maybe someday I can accept it as it's written. For the
present, I limit my own Gibbs tree to what I'm sending you as regards the earlier
generations.

Mike,
I think I've seen a little of this. I've printed out your pages, and they look great! I read somewhere that John and Suzanne Gibbs got land that was declared in Tryon County, North Carolina. Later it was decided the land was in Union/Spartan Counties, South Carolina. Whether the problem was the surveyor, or a change in borders, or what, I don't know. I suspect there is more to this story than I have yet seen.
Thanks!
Evelyn
