Fowler / Foster Family Connection Clarification

Provided by: Robert Fowler

Fowler/Foster 4 generations

  • These marriages represent the four generations of Fowlers and Fosters.  I have reconstructed the story to try to make it clearer.   Wiley Fowler and Ginsey Jane Fowler were brother and sister.  The bloodlines all come back along these two lines.

    First Generation

Thomas Foster to Ginsey Jane Fowler in April of 1821.  Their marriage ended with the passing of Thomas around 1850.

    Second Generation

William M Foster and Missouria Fowler.  William was the son of Thomas and Ginsey while Missouria was the daughter of Wiley Fowler and Rachel Lewis.  Missouria was also a niece of Ginsey.  William and Missouria were 1st cousins.  They married in Coosa County, Alabama in 1842.  Their marriage ended in 1864 or 1865 with the passing of William.  There would then be a 13 or 14 year break with no Fowler/Foster in wedlock that I am aware of.

    Third Generation

William Wiley Fowler and Elizabeth Jane Foster.  William Wiley Fowler was a son of Miles Fowler and Jane Fondren, grandson of  Wiley Fowler and Rachel Lewis and Ginsey was his grandaunt.  Elizabeth was a daughter of Thomas Foster Jr and Martha Baggett and granddaughter of Thomas Foster Sr and Ginsey Jane Fowler.  William Wiley Fowler and Elizabeth Jane Foster were 2nd cousins.  They married in 1878 in Perry County, Alabama.   That marriage ended with the passing of Elizabeth in 1919.  James Peter Foster married Mary Adeline Fowler.  James was another son of Thomas Foster Jr and Martha Baggett.  Mary was a daughter of Miles Fowler and Jane Fondren and sister of William Wiley Fowler and Ginsey was her grandaunt.  They too were 2nd cousins.  They were married in 1879 according to the 1900 census.  That marriage ended with the passing of James in 1926.  Elias Sauter Foster and Rachel Desmond Fowler.  Rachel was a granddaughter of Wiley Fowler and Rachel Bishop Lewis and Ginsey was her grandaunt.  Elias was a grandson of Thomas and Ginsey by way of Thomas Foster Jr and Martha Baggett.  Elias and Rachel were second cousins.  They married about 1887 according to the 1900 census and that was probably in Perry County, Alabama.  That marriage ended with the passing of Elias in 1941.

    Fourth Generation

Alvin Berry Foster, son of John Thomas Foster, grandson of Thomas Foster Jr and great grandson of Thomas Foster and Ginsey Jane Fowler, married Elma Nora Fowler.  Elma was a daughter of Lewis Walter Fowler and Juline Bell Holley, a grand daughter of William Thomas Fowler, a great granddaughter of Wiley William Fowler and great great granddaughter of Wiley Fowler and Ginsey was her great great grandaunt.  Alvin was a 3rd generation Foster/Fowler.  Elma was a 4th generation Fowler.  Alvin and Emma were married around 1927 according to the 1930 census, thus the Fowler/Foster connection had already spanned over a century at that time.  They were 3rd cousins, once removed.  That marriage ended with the passing of Alvin in 1982.  Bernice Raye Foster, daughter of Robert Thomas Foster and grandaughter of Richard Lafayette Foster, great granddaughter of Thomas Foster Jr and great great granddaughter of Thomas Foster and Ginsey Jane Fowler, married Lewis Clemon Fowler.  Lewis is a brother of Elma mentioned in the paragraph above so his lineage is the same as hers so as not to restate it here.  Bernice and Lewis married about 1931 and they were 4th cousins.   They were married after the 1930 census.  That marriage ended with the passing of Lewis in 1981.

    Footnote

I believe at this time that the death of Alvin Foster in 1982 may have ended over 160 years of the Fowler/Foster connection.  There was only the 13 or 14 year span noted at the end of the 2nd generation when there was not a Fowler/Foster marriage of these bloodlines during that time.

Wiley Fowler is my ggg grandfather.  Ginsey Jane Fowler and Thomas Foster are my ggg grandparents.  William Wiley Fowler and Elizabeth Jane Foster are my gg grandparents.  Mary Adeline Fowler and James Peter Foster are my gg aunt and uncle, both by blood.  Rachel Desmond Fowler and Elias Sauter Foster are my gg aunt and uncle, both by blood.

CSA soldiers were farmers didn't own slaves & most were illiterate & understood
that they were defending the south & protecting their families & lands from an invading
army from the north, and preserving the constitutions as originally understood, less than 5%
of southerners owned slaves. Union Pres. Lincoln and his Gen. Sherman both had owned slaves.
To their credit, rose above their beliefs and removed this, institution of slavery, from our society.

    HONORING THE HEROES
    OF THE 9TH INFANTRY DIVISION-VIETNAM

History on Recon Platoon: by Robert Fowler

Sgt Wesley Earl Fowler's unit in Vietnam

Recon Platoon, 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division (1968-1969)

Below is the biographical sketch I have written for the Recon Platoon, 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division, Vietnam, the unit my brother served in:

The Battalion Commander, Fred Keith Mahaffey, later became one of the youngest 4 Star Generals in the modern history of the US Army. He was earmarked to become the Army Chief of Staff before cancer took him in 1986. I wrote the bio for him on findagrave. Findagrave had to approve that bio and did not allow certain things to be put in it, such as Mahaffey was succeeded in Command on 3 separate occasions by Colin Powell.

For the most part, this is from conversations with Mark Brockway, CSM (Retired), who was my brother's boss and Vietnam. This platoon, although under administrative command of CPT Willie Stallings, answered in combat directly to LTC Mahaffey. Mahaffey personally believed every Infantry soldier should be Ranger Trained. If you read his bio and then the sketch below, you will see his handprints all over this Platoon. I have talked to Brockway and still do on almost a daily basis. I clear any any information I have through him because I have encoutered some embellishments that he has clarified. His specific comment about my brother was, "One hundred pounds of romping stomping hell mounted in a pair of combat boots."

Mahaffey's wife coauthored the book "Who Will Lead", a book focused on the rise to 4 Star General of every US Army 4 Star since World War I, it never focused on specific battles but politics and the path these men went up. I recently read the book and then sent it to Mark Brockway who has since read it and forwarded it on to another interested person. One thing that I didn't know that I found on in the book was Battalion Commanders only commanded for 6 month stints in Vietnam. The predecessor to Mahaffey was LTC James Lindsay, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_J._Lindsay who later became a 4 Star General. The successor to Mahaffey was LTC Gregory "Matt" Dillon, http://www.taps.org/uploadedfiles/TAPS_FRIENDS/PDFS/Colonel%20Gregory%20P%20Dillon%20bio.pdf he was the keynote speaker at the Recon Platoon Reunion in Colorado Springs in 2011.

The "jitterbugging" tactic mentioned is from, http://www.history.army.mil/books/Vietnam/Sharpen/ch06.htm For Mahffey's part, just search his name but the entire article is interesting.

Lastly, the camaflouge berets mentioned below were a big deal to these guys. On several occasions men in the Battalion who were not a part of Recon were found to be wearing those berets. When that occurred, they were promptly relieved of that beret by a Recon member(s), by what ever means it took.

Recon Platoon, 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division (1968-1969)

Members of the 1968-1969 version of this platoon were for the most part handpicked by then Platoon Sergeant SFC Mark Brockway, who in turn had been handpicked by then Battalion Commander LTC Fred Keith Mahaffey who envisioned this platoon as a "super infantry platoon". The platoon initiated contact with the enemy and when the enemy responded, they then were engaged by this platoon while Command and Control above (Mahaffey) delivered a devastating airmobile insertion of combat troops, artillery fire, air cavalry UH-1 helicopter gunships and AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters. The use of this unit was unique and highly effective and made this a elite and highly decorated platoon. The execution of this order of battle was so precise that the result was over 90 percent of the 2d Battalion 60th Infantry engagements were over within 10 to 30 minutes as a result of the speed of the operation and the aggressive attitude of the troops. The insertion of troops was a tactic called "jitterbugging" and perfected by Mahaffey. When most successful, jitterbugging provided an opportunity for airmobile encirclement of a Viet Cong battalion or company. The rapid build-up of combat power to surround and destroy an enemy force was known variously as "piling-on" or establishing a seal. Mahaffey was very skilled in the use of airmobile assets and refined the operations of the battalion until in Long An Province insertions were made no farther from the target than 100 meters and in some instances as close as 15 meters. This was achieved by helicopters screaming into battle flying at speeds approaching 140 mph, hugging the terrain and treetops a few feet below to achieve the delivery of total surprise. The platoon did not wear steel pots or flak jackets, like the rest of the Battalion. They wore soft hats, in most cases camouflage berets, and normally would be carrying 25-30 magazines of 5.56mm ammo per man, frag grenades, smoke grenades, concussion grenades, hand flares, star cluster flares, atleast two 40mm grenade launchers, M60 machine gun, Light Anti-Tank Weapon(LAW), CS gas grenades and at least three radios. For the most part they traveled light, fast and heavily armed. Upon arrival of support troops, the Recon Platoon continued to engage the enemy and applying pressure as the piling on took place, providing precise coordinates for the attack helicopters, helicopter gunships and artillery fire. Doing so, they were able to avoid considerable losses due to "friendly fire". The camaflouge berets these individuals wore in combat was a great source of pride and LTC Mahaffey was the individual that made them the signature of this platoon.
