Obituary of B A Foster:

Research by: Robert Vaughn

Posted in Minutes of the East
Texas Lone Star Convention
(Sacred Harp Organization)

Obituary*

B. A. Foster was borned July 30, 1850 and died Nov. 8, 1922. He professed a hope in Christ about the age of 25, and lived a consistant Christian life until his death, being a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. He was a dear lover of the old songs such as, "Amazing Grace," "When I can read my title clear," "Grace 'tis a Charming Sound," "O for a Closer Walk with God" and many others too numerous to mention. Therefore be it resolved in his death that his wife has lost a faithful companion, his children a loving father, the church a true member and the convention a good supporter. Therefore be it resolved that we bow in humble submission to the will of him that doeth all things well. May a copy of these resolutions be spread in the minutes of this convention and a copy be furnished to his companion.

Respectfully submited,
J. A. Burgess

*At the 1924 session of the Lone Star Convention, "The obituary committee for Bro. B. A. Foster asked that they be granted another year to report, as the convention would meet at Bro. Fosters home church next year, and the convention granted the time." The convention met at the Primitive Baptist Church in Maud beginning Friday July 31, 1925.

Note from Robert Vaughn:

Mike, what I have of the Lone Star Sacred Harp Convention minutes are "copies of copies". The obituary as typed above appears to have been as written by the committee, and was probably on a loose sheet of paper stuff in the back of the minute book. The obituary also appears within the text of the 1925 minutes, with only minor differences - a few words are left out, and "borned", "consistant" & "submited" are spelled correctly.

Note from Mike White:

The family is forever thankful of Mr Robert Vaughn's efforts to locate this information and the efforts, to contact the family and share his finds, it was surprising and enlightening and has opened another dimension to our Ancestors in Bowie Co Texas. In the context of the Greater White family,
solidifies our connections back to South Carolina, birth place of BF White, the Foster & Fowler's.

Benjamain Franklin White, son of Robert White Sr (1743-1843), started the tradition of Sacred Harp Conventions in Georgia, after he published his book 'Sacred Harp' in 1844, these conventions have now spread throughout the United States and Canada, attracting followers from around the world, it is multi-denominational, as BF would have wanted it, and now attracks our youth...

Our Story of the Foster / Fowler Families
Many thanks to Marlene Walker and Betty Smith
for there Contributions and to my Education of
 the Foster/Fowler families.

Our current knowledge of these families begins in Spartanburg South Carolina, where both families lived, prior to 1820, we know the two families had inter-married with each other.  The known migration route of both families is about the same, for those, leaving Spartanburg Co SC, and moving to Coosa Co AL, we know the Foster's were there by 1820, and some of the Fowler's may have moved with them, between 1810 and 1820. The Foster's first appear on the Census for Coosa Co., in 1820, the Fowler's I am not sure at this time.

The Foster and Fowler lines both had descendants who served in the various conflicts; War of 1812, Civil War and the Mexican American War.  No doubt we will someday discover that the Foster's / Fowler's, prior to South Carolina, probably served, in the Revolutionary War.

I would speculate that the move to Alabama from South Carolina had something to do the former Cherokee Indian Lands, in 1818, several area's were declared safe for White Settlers, after the removal of the Indians, and Grants and Lotto's of land were given out to encourage folks to settle those lands. Another reason is just plain and simple, cheap land, that always inspired mass migrations, and of course the Adventure of the West.

With the closing of the Civil War, many lost their lands and estates or were unable to maintain their former estates, with the release and freedom of all slaves, and the lack of farm labor, many were left with enormous debt.  Many folks lost their sons in the War, and were left destitute, and without means of survival, or seemingly, a future.  This may have inspired the next migration, for some of the Foster's and Fowler's westward into Texas, and to Bowie County, I am sure they just didn't stumble into Bowie Co, they saw potential and a future for their families, most likely passed to them from kin or friends, already living in the county.

With the coming of the Industrial Revolution, the beginning of the change over from a Farming Society to Industry, compounded the difficult times, for decades.  Sort of the same situation some of us have experienced in the change over from Industry to a High Tech Society... Issues for another day...
