Amount of Indian Blood

The amount of Indian Blood listed on this enrollment was incorrect for all of the Applicants, at 1/4 including the parents, which we now know was wrong, and has been corrected, via an amendment of sorts.  I am still investigating this for myself, but at the least, Thomas F Wagnon was half, and Lucinda his wife may have been Full blooded Cherokee (Gen #5).  In any case now, his children are now corrected to show 1/2, and their children 1/4 (Gen #6), and 'we' (Gen #7) to 1/16, on our CDIB Cards.

HOW TO ENROLL IN THE CHEROKEE NATION

ACCORDING TO THE NICE PEOPLE AT THE CHEROKEE REGISTRATION OFFICE, THERE IS NO MINIMUM BLOOD AMOUNT REQUIRED FOR MEMBERSHIP!

I am not a tribal official, just a member of the tribe. I cannot send you a membership application. You have to get that from the address below.

To enroll in the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma you have to do several things:

You have to establish you are the direct relative of a Cherokee who listed on one of the several government rolls taken around the turn of the century (Dawes, Miller, etc.).

  • This is best done through the use of certified birth certificates issued by the State where you were born. (State Certified Certificate!)

  • If you cannot establish your direct "blood" link through a chain of birth certificates, it will be very difficult to join the tribe.

  • Contact the tribal offices in Tahlequah, Oklahoma at the address listed below. Ask them for a "Certified Degree of Indian Blood" (CDIB) application and a tribal membership application.

  • You will first need to have the Bureau of Indian Affairs determine the amount of Cherokee blood you have (1/4, 3/8, etc.). This is done through the CDIB application. Fill out the application & mail it to the tribal address below.

  • Once the BIA has determined this & that you are "really" a Cherokee, they will mail you the CDIB card.

  • You can then apply for tribal membership by mailing the tribal membership application to the address below.

  • You must get your CDIB card first!

  • The process usually takes several months because they are backlogged in Talaquah.

Appears Marshal was placed on a drafting list

or otherwise that he actually served.  The only
brother of Marshall that I know of that served
in this war, was Millard A. Wagnon.

"The Call to Arms"

Below was a call to duty for our Oklahoma Brethren.
For WWI:

Prepare Now to Register
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Instructions for Men Who Are to Be Called On to Serve Their Country.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"To Insure a Safer World for Our Children.

Science the beginning of our government it has been the law of this country that every able-bodied male citizen and declaring between eighteen and forty-five is subject to be summoned to its defense.

The occasions have happily been rare when such a summons has had to be issued. We face the need now.

"Over 10,000,000 of our men of fighting age have already registered for selection for service. Out of this number many have been chosen, trained, and sent to battle across the sea, while others are in training or on the way. They have made us very proud of them, these splendid soldiers, and some have already given their lives for us. We shall not fail to support them and to re-enforce them.

"The remaining 13,000,000 are now called upon to register for selection. The only purpose of this extension of the selective service law is to bring a speedier end to the war and to insure a safer world for our children.

"Since the enemy has compelled the arbitrament of force, force let it be, force overwhelming. The registration of the entire man-power of the United States will be our unmistakable pledge to humanity that democracy is to be the regime of the future."

"NEWTON D. BAKER,
"Secretary of War."
