This Robert Grady White must be the same one on the WWI Draft Card,
I believe Robert was either divorced, separated or had a travelling Job,
and missed the 1930, 1940 census? Same Birth Dates... evidence suggest
he was living after 1930.  The SSN was issued in Louisiana, SSN
first started in 1935, so after this 1930 Bessie or Robert both moved to New
Orleans... where Bessie appears on the 1940 with her 3 children,
widow
a death records shows a Robert White born 17 Jan 1899 died: Feb 1957?

Note on Robert's WWI Draft Card below, it was issued in LA,
when he was living there, and shows is permanent address as
Wesson Copiah Co MS...

 Notes for Robert:
Found this not online about Robert Grady White death in New Orleans

Robert Grady White:

"Born in Wesson, Copiah, Mississippi, USA on 17 Jan 1899.
Robert Grady married Geneva Gates,

He passed away on 10 Feb 1957 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
http://records.ancestry.com/Robert_Grady_White_records.ashx?pid=20386674"

======================================================

COULD Geneva BE A 2ND WIFE OF ROBERT??? . after Bessie Hill?

This would certainly explain, why Robert wasn't on the 1930 or 1940 Census,
with wife Bessie, 1930 she's with her parents, 1940 still herself & Children.

Also, there is a Robert G White born same day as Robert Grady, and buried
with what could be his 2nd wife - See the following FindAGrave link:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=66609099

Grave has:
Born: 17 Jan 1899
Died: 10 Feb 1957
Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery

Mississippi, USA
He is buried with wife (2nd?) Geneva Gates

Location: Hearne, Texas
Issue Date: March 8, 1912

UP^     Albert Elonzo White son of Robert E & Mary White - Death Certificate     UP^

Albert's Death Certificate filled out by person not directly related to the White Family:
Explanation / Theory:

DC shows:
Father as: Joe  (probably brother Joe)
Mother: unkn   (how did they know the father?)
Born: Nov 17, 1871 Carterville Bartow Co GA
Diec: Mar 5, 1912 Robertson Co TX

By the 1870 and 1880 we know Albert was born either 1868 or 1864 each census different, (census errors),
however, I believe the 1900 for Albert is the correct birth MO/YR, Nov 1868.

Explanation:

1. Albert E White was the only child of Robt E to move to Texas, there were others related, later....

2. So, Albert's wife Euda Jackson, was born in Texas, they married in Texas.

3. Person who signed Albert's DC was Mary Jackson, probably a sister or relative of Euda's.

4. Thus, Euda from TX, never met Albert's parents or siblings for that matter... and Mary Jackson
knew nothing about Albert's family either...

5. How did they come up with Albert being born in Bartow Co GA?

6. Well, Euda probably remembered that Albert told her about his Uncle Thomas Warren White's
Will/Estate, from Bartow, that he was listed on, and also about Charles H White, Albert's other uncle
that lived and died in Bartow, and probably discussed Albert's brother Joseph C White
(Joe White on the DC), his brother was also living in GA.

7. They did not know Albert's mother's name, so how could we expect them to remember the father of Albert
     that they never met???

8. On the Grave of Albert they used the DC Date, I believe the Nov 7th is correct, the Year 1871, is wrong...

9. The 1900 Census for Albert E White the Guard, was Nov 1868, I believe this is the correct MO/YR.
the 1870 and 1880 census backs this up...

10. Conclusion: This is a Prime case of a Bad Death Certificate, where a spouse/relative used their
best memory, in the absence of White relatives. I've seen this so many times in my White lineage...
Euda put heads and tails together,  and figured, incorrectly, where Albert was born and used his brother, Joe, as the father...

11. The 1969 family Letter written by Evelyn Clement, a cousin, in NC, to possibly Albert's brother Joe's, daughter Lessie? White,
in GA,  ties Albert's family to Robert E White, as the letter, names Albert's,  daughter Daphna, living in Palestine Texas, so
we know that the Albert in Robertson Co TX, was ours for sure, Daphna was a very uncommon name.

12. Albert's daughter Daphna & her husband visited Albert's sister, Annie Virginia White Richburg, in Oak Grove LA, via a family
letter, this also lends support that we have the correct Albert E White,

Family Letter #2 - 1969

From FLC letter (dated 13 June 1969) to his first cousin
Mary Evelyn “Evelyn” Clement, which prompted the reply.

Dear Evelyn,                            June 13, 1969

I have a poor memory for dates. But, at a guess, somewhere around 1895, a young woman named White came to visit my great-uncle, Calvin White, who married Martha Cooper, one of my Father’s aunts. This young woman was later to marry my Uncle Ned Clement, recently out of college and at that time, not having fully decided what he would do for a living, was then putting in time on his father’s (Edward Clement) farm. This Mattie White met my sister Bettie and they became close friends. Well, you know more than I do about the rest of it. Will you please tell me where this young woman, later to be your mother came from, any brief history of her family, and whether or not her father was a brother of my Uncle Calvin White. She and Uncle Ned soon became very good friends, and we sold our house to Uncle Ned when we moved to Greer, and this move was close to the year 1896, for we left Greer close to 1900 and we moved to Campobello, SC close to 19__, for the last school year I spent in Greer was 1900....”

“Mother said her name was Martha Jane, but she was always called Mattie. She was born in Mississippi. I grew up thinking it was “near Jackson”, and her sister in Louisiana [Annie] said it was Columbia, Mississippi. Her father died when she was eleven years old, and her mother had died when she was three. Her dad remarried. She had very pleasant memories of her father, but she was so young when he died. The kids were taken in by relatives.”- “Mother used to tell us stories of the Mississippi River rising clear up to their porches, and they would hop in a boat and paddle off. Virgie and I thought this was the absolutely marvelous thing.”- “Mother spent time in Atlanta and New Orleans, but I don’t believe she ever lived in Georgia.

I believe she met Papa when she lived with Uncle Calvin, whom I pure hated from the things she would say that Uncle Calvin would have a fit about if he could see me doing or wearing some thing or other. She lived with someone, she said, who always bought her shoes a size or two too large so that she could grow into them and wouldn’t need a new pair because of being too short.” - “On thinking back over the years, I believe Mother told me that she was related to Aunt Sally Cooper. I didn’t know you had a sister Nellie [Bettie] (or is it Nettie?) -- I seem to have just heard of Cousin Olive.”- “Mother always said she intended for her girls to be able to make a living for themselves, remembering her childhood and young girlhood - when young women didn’t work and had to be taken in by their kin.” - “I remember somewhere Mother lived where they were impoverished aristocracy, she said, or they considered themselves the elite.

Anyway, Mother said they would pull down the shades when they made the beds, so the neighbors wouldn’t happen to see them doing it. And when some visitors came in it always happened that the “maid” was out and that was why they were serving the refreshments themselves.” - “Aunt Annie was a big woman and said she was glad I [Evelyn] was small like mother. As it happened, I am about half an inch lower than Mother. She always said I resembled Grandmother Clement in size and dark hair.” - “I think Mother lived in Louisiana some of the time. She would speak of the bayous out there and I could hardly wait to see one when I did visit Aunt Annie in Louisiana.

Mother had a brother Albert who moved to Texas, and he had a daughter Daphna. Somehow or other she and I got each other’s address, and when I went to Oak Grove [LA, Aunt Annie’s] we agreed that Daphna and her husband Erle Dickson would come the Sunday following my arrival, which they did. Aunt Annie was so happy she could hardly stand the excitement and we had a big chicken dinner.” - “I suppose that Uncle Calvin must have been the brother of Mother’s father, tho I never thought about it before. Herman White of Inman, who was a clerk in the mill there, was a cousin of Mother’s also. His wife Flora moved to Greer after Cousin Herman’s death.”

 Family Letter #4 - 1969
Also from “Brothers and sisters of Joseph White - as far as I know”,
a carbon copy of two typed pages I found in Raiford’s stuff in 2011
while visiting her in Indianapolis. They were written by Mary Evelyn
“Evelyn” Clement as part of a letter to cousin of hers, a son or daughter
of Joseph C. White, probably about 1968-69. As Raiford was the executor
of Evelyn’s will, she must have found this in Evelyn’s papers. In any case,
it was saved!

Mattie White Clement - deceased. Had five children, DeWitt Talmage was the oldest - died on December 3, 1937.

     E. Earle Clement (Jr.) was second oldest. Joseph Carroll was next and died when two years old, two or three years before the birth of the next child, Mary Evelyn Clement. Next and last child was Sarah Virginia Clement, always called “Virgie” by the family. Carroll’s first name of Joseph was named for your father.  Mattie (she said her name was really Martha Jane) was the baby of the family. Her mother died when she was two or three, and her father remarried (he died when she was 11) and there were some half-brothers as a result.  I believe Mae Miller could give you more background. Her mother was older and Mae is older than I. Too, they lived in Mississippi and were able to keep up better with relatives.  Mother had some relatives in South Carolina who came to see us sometimes. One was the Herman White family, cousins, who lived in Inman when we did. One daughter still lives, Mrs. J. W. Glenn, Jr., of Laurens, South Carolina.

You asked about the relatives of Papa’s side ………….[have cut out this as it is about the Clement relatives] Mother died on April 20, 1938. Was 64 the February 28 preceding - not old (I HOPE!), but she hadn’t been well for years, and after Talmage’s death in December ‘37 she had very little life and desire left in her.  Papa died on October 5, 1937, at a hale and hearty 75. He was 75 on June 1 preceding his death.

We do not have any family record on Mother’s side, but I asked a lot of questions when I was there. I liked all my kins people in Mississippi and Louisiana and they were all very excited to see “Mattie’s daughter”. Mother took us all out there when we were little.  Mae Miller know more than I do. Men don’t talk as much about family as women probably and there are some Half brothers she knows about, I think.  I believe I remember writing you yesterday that Mother was born near Jackson, Mississippi, but I should have said Columbia. Aunt Annie corrected me on this when I talked to her, and said the place was Columbia, not Jackson.  I have taken this in and out of my typewriter all day today - I’d finish a batch of letters for the boss and then start back on this.

Love,

[On the reverse of my copy of this letter, my mother [Raiford] summed up what she knew about Mattie White as follows:

Children of _______ White (probably a son [brother?] of Calvin White

 _______ _______

- Laura White, who lived in McComb, MS, had a daughter (who was older than Evelyn)

- John White, who lived in Wesson. MS

- Albert White, who moved to Texas - daughter Daphna mar. Erle Dickson

- Joe White, who married a gal from Rockmart, GA

- Annie White, who married a Richburg & lived in Oak Grove, LA - two boys

- Martha Jane White, who married Ned Clement (mother died when Mattie was 3)

(father died when Mattied was 11)

Robert E White
Born: 28 Feb 1825 Spartanburg Co SC
       Died: abt 1885 MS
==============
Descrepancies:
==============

1. SC Bible Records show "Robert E White born 28 Feb 1825."
2. The 1850 census shows him as 17 years old?
3. Recorded in the Minutes of his church as being baptized in 1845,
if the census is correct, then he was 12 years old, in 1845?, that goes
against Church rules, normally, you were baptized at 20 or 21, or as an adult, at this time.
4. So, I believe Robt III was 20 years old in 1845, and the census, was incorrect, on his age,
my bet is with the South Carolina bible records.
5. as a comparison, all of his siblings were received and dismissed and baptized as adults, not children.

Minutes of the Cedar Springs Baptist Church Spartanburg Co SC:

Sep 28, 1845 (Page 74) .. Dismis: Robt White Letter after being Baptized. dismis: Sep 28, 1845

Being received and dismissed the same day was probably to satisfy his father's request,
1845, was the same year that some of his uncles and aunts migrated from Union Co SC to Texas.

Note:  Judging by the 1850 census, Robert's son Robert E was only 17 yrs old. Usually, a person
was of age to be received at his church, around 20 or 21 years old, by his choice.  But this
record is note worthy, in some cases, for example, young man marrying before 20, or
might be considered to be of age or grounds to be received at an earlier age at his church.
Will take a bit of luck to figure this one out... Robert White Jr, was said to have taken
pride in seeing all of his children baptized, as all his surviving children did show up at is
church, at one time or another.

It is also note worthy, that the folks that migrated from Union County SC to Bowie County
Texas, left SC 1845, the 1st migration arrived 17 Feb 1845 Bowie Co TX.  Those men show
up on the Bowie Co Tax polls in 1846, Ben White, Elias's son, wife and mother in law Sarah
Nix, was in that group.  I suspect the 2nd migration in 1846, was Elias's, as he shows up on
the 1847 poll tax.  He and Anne his wife were dismissed from their church 1846.

There was a Robert White in Cass Co TX next to Bowie, I've suspected a connection,
several children of Elias White died on the journey, and some soon after their arrival.
Those that left Union, were dismissed from their churches in 1845 and 1846, fortunately
those records have survived time, as the Cedar Springs minutes have...

**As we know Richmond Co GA was a point
that some of Robt Jr's children moved to for a time.
Currently living in this county in 1850 were Robert's
Aunt Mary White Rhodes, followed by sister Susan who
married Absey Rhodes, a marriage I suspect arranged
by Mary White Rhodes.  Thomas Warren and Charles
White I believe were also in the area a time, before
settling in Bartow Co GA.

Some Notes on the Unit's History:

http://www.mississippiscv.org/MS_Units/1st_mississippi_light_artillery.htm

"The regiment [1st Mississippi Light Artillery] assembled in camp of instruction near Jackson in May, 1862, and elected field officers. Colonel Withers, in General Orders No. 1, dated May 16, appointed James J. Calloway Acting Adjutant, William D. Elder Acting Sergeant-Major, Charles F. Trumbull and Andrew Trumbull Aides, Dr. M. W. Boyd Surgeon, Dr. C. A. Rive Assistant Surgeon, Capt. Thomas C. Fearn Commissary, Capt. William T. Hickle Quartermaster and Rev. Dr. W. W. Dovel Chaplain. Soon afterward the regiment was called to Vicksburg on account of the attack upon that place by fleets from New Orleans and Memphis.

Ralston's company was reported detached at Port Hudson in August, 1862. They crossed the river and became a part of the Confederate forces afterward under the command of Gen. Richard Taylor. [Note from elsewhere in "Military History of Mississippi, 1803-1898" regarding Ralston’s Company: In action at Grand Gulf, 1862; ordered to Port Hudson after the close of bombardment of Vicksburg; fired the first gun at the Essex in August; ordered to the Trans-Mississippi department in September, 1862. With Gen. Alfred Mouton's command, in the LaFourche district, and in battle of Donaldsonville, October 27, suffered severely. Captain Ralston was wounded and captured. "This officer managed his battery with coolness and ability and deserves much praise," Mouton said. Engagements to close of war, Bayou Lafourche, Franklin, La., Milliken Bend, Lake Providence, Red River, Pineville, Grand Ecore. Federal report, November, 1864, Connor Battery, commanded by Lieutenant Foulk, ordered back to Monroe, La., time of Price's raid in Missouri. Mississippi Battery, Capt. Benjamin Wade, in Trans-Mississippi Army, reported December 31, 1864, attached to Semmes' Battalion Horse Artillery, Maxey's Cavalry Division. At Alexandria January, 865.] Herrod's, Bradford's and Abbay's companies were sent to Port Hudson later in 1862.

The battalion at Port Hudson was no less heroic and devoted. Abbay's, Bradford's and Herrod's companies, at Port Hudson, had two wounded, March 14, 1863, when Admiral Farragut ran the batteries and the man-of-war Mississippi was burned, and other boats driven back, including the Essex.
Regimental headquarters at Tensas Landing, August 10, Colonel Withers commanding; at Sibley's Mills, east shore Mobile Bay, August 23, Major Wofford commanding; at Mobile thereafter, November, 1864, First Mississippi Artillery, Capt. Marquis L. Cooke, in Maury's command; Bradford's and Ratliff’s Battery in Southwest Mississippi. Two guns of Bradford's Battery were captured at Brookhaven, November 18, 1864, by an expedition from Baton Rouge under Colonel Fonda, who "surprised the town by daylight, scattering a small infantry force and capturing a section of artillery with caissons. The gunners were, many of them, shot down at their pieces." (Gen. A. L. Lee's report). Private Winn was killed in this fight. January, 1865, Abbay's Battery, 80 present, four field guns, in Semple's Battalion Artillery, Mobile; March, 1865, Company L, at Battery Mclntosh, Mobile Bay; Company G, Captain Cowan, in Grayson's Battalion, right wing defenses of Mobile, Col. Melancthon Smith commanding. The Vaiden company manned a battery of heavy artillery. "

=====================
https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/1st_Regiment,_Mississippi_Light_Artillery

1st Artillery Regiment was organized during the late summer of 1862 with eleven companies. During the war the various companies served as both light and heavy artillery but not as one command. The regiment was assigned to the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and Companes A, C, D, F, G, I, K, and L were assigned to the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana, Company E to the Trans-Mississippi Department, and Company G to the Army of Tennessee. Disbanded before the end of the war. Its commanders were Colonel William T. Withers, Lieutenant Colonel James P. Parker, and Majors Benjamin R. Holmes and Jefferson L. Wofford.
