Obituary

Daisy Staples Johnson went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday May 6, 2010, and to be reunited with the love of her life and husband of 58 years, John L. "Jack" Johnson. She was born on Sept. 25, 1916, to Searcy Vernon and Annie Roye Staples on the Staples family plantation southwest of Lindale, Smith County, Texas.

Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, 2010, in the Caudle-Rutledge Funeral Home Chapel in Lindale with the Rev. James Cheatham and OES officiating. Interment will follow in the Hopewell Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by the aforementioned parents and beloved husband; two brothers, Glenn Staples and Roy Staples; and a sister, Hazel Neal. Mrs. Johnson moved from Lindale to Swan at the age of 12, and remained there for the next 68 years, moving to Tyler in 1996 until her death. Her devotion to youth was major in her life, teaching public school in Swan, Liberty Hill and in Tyler's Bonner, Gary, Bell and Orr elementary schools, and Sunday school at Swan Baptist Church and Queen Street Baptist Church, which later became Westwood Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Jack V. Johnson of Tyler, and Michael J. Johnson and wife Sandy of Lindale; granddaughter, Ginger Oravsky and husband James of Rockwall; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday evening at the funeral home.

Obituary:

"    Death Claims One Of the City's Best Loved Residents
Mrs. Ella Black Is Buried Wednesday At 3:00 o'Clock
Mrs. Ella Black, widow of the late W.T. Black one of Mt. Pleasant's best
loved citizens passed away at her home on north Johnson Avenue at 8:55
o'clock Tuesday evening from the effects of a lengthy illness.  She was
73 years of age.

Mrs. Black had been a resident of Mt. Pleasant for many years, and for a
long time was active in the grocery business here.  She was a devout
member of the Baptist Church and numbered her friends by the thousands
all of whom are deeply saddened by her death.

The deceased had only one relative in Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Sam Hays, a
cousin, and no immediate relatives at all.  Other survivors include
eight nieces and six nephews.

Funeral services were held at the local Baptist Church at 3:00 o'clock
Wednesday afternoon, under the direction of the pastor, Rev. L.E. Lamb,
and Rev. Geo. C. Moore, pastor of the Presbyterian Church.  Interment
was in the Masonic cemetery.  Members of the Eastern Star took part in
the ceremonies at the church.

Active pallbearers included A.S. Mitchell, W.M. Driggers, G.A. Mount,
A.B. Gilpin, E.C. Fitzgerald, Frank Bernard, Grover Ard, and Bird Old
Sr.  Honorary pallbearers were Jack Cross, Frank Sims, F.W. Stephenson,

Note from Mike:

The fact that there were No "Survived by's..." or "mention of children or
brothers or Sisters, confirms my belief, that Ella's Siblings had all passed
away by 1941, that there were no children from this marriage, and no close
relatives, except Mrs Sam Hays, whom I have not linked to the family, Ella
was the youngest, and may have been the last of her family. We now know
that Ella cared for her Mother before her death in 1903.  A Kind and loving
caring lady, whom we shall remember.

 Records of Jesse T White

About Jesse Tom White:

JT's grandfather was Robert White Sr. 1743-1843, he brought the family into South
Carolina in 1788, settling just north of the Tigar River, in what was then, Old 96th district,
later this section became Union County SC.

The family began attending the Padgett's Creek Baptist Church when they arrived in 1788,
and are recorded in those Church minutes. They later moved up a tad closer to Fairforest Creek,
and began attending the Lower Fairforest Baptist Church, it was a branch of the Padgett's, is
considered the oldest church in the up country of SC (1762). Robert White Jr. married Mary
Polly Cooper in Union Co. Then in 1818, moved to Spartanburg Co SC, and began a long
and wonderful history, in that county.

Robt Jr. 1784-1880, and his wife, Mary, began to attend the Cedar Springs Baptist Church in Spartanburg Co SC, in 1819. Robt. saw to it that all of his children were received and Baptized, before
migrating away from SC.  This I am sure brought great satisfaction and sense of accomplishment
to Robt. Jr.  Mary Polly Cooper White, died in 1840, Robert Jr. remarried a couple of years later
to Susan Norman, from Union Co SC, her family was in attendance at the Padgett's Crk. Church.

The reason the family moved to Spartanburg, was, his wife's mother and step father and family were in that county, it is assumed Robert made to move to be close to Mary's relatives and his life long friend, Mary's brother, James W. Cooper.

Jesse was born in Spartanburg County SC in 1821.

In 1840 Jesse is dismissed from his church, in Spartanburg, and is not recorded in county
records thereafter, may have initially, moved with either his brother Warren or Uncle BF White
to GA, quite possibly, Richmond Co GA, where he had family, or Harris Co GA, where BF
White moved in 1842.

JT wrote several songs for his Uncles Book 'The Sacred Harp', published in 1844. At
some point between 1840 and 1845 he moved to MS, and married Caroline Ethridge, in 1845.
In the 1850 Census he is County Clerk for Winston Co MS, is raising a family, is involved
in many Deed transactions, some of his own, as well as part of his Job as County Clerk.

It is also possible that Jesse moved from SC to MS, without a stop in GA, though the book
was published in 1844, the songs may have been written prior to Jesse's departure from SC.

The last Deed that Jesse served as Agent, in Winston Co MS was 1857, however, Jesse
could have already moved, by the time this transaction was complete, I have estimated that
Jesse left MS between 1856/57.  It is also possible Jesse stopped along the trial to grow a
crop for the family, I would surmise, that he may have lived as a boarder in Smith Co TX
until he obtained property and a home.  In 1859 Jesse T White is received at the Carmel
Baptist Church, in Smith County, the first record we have of the families arrival in Smith Co.

By 1860, Jesse and wife, are in Smith County TX, a daughter Ida is born in 1860 in
this county. The two older children; Susan and Uriah were born in Mississippi.

Descendants say Jesse was running a Mill in Lindale Smith County TX, before moving
to Tyler Smith Co TX, where he and his wife were Owner/Operators of a local Hotel.
He is recorded in the 1860/70/80 Census for Smith County TX.  We find that Jesse
died in Mt. Pleasant Titus Co TX, at the home of his daughter Ella Black. Caroline died
in the same county in 1903.

In the 1870 census, (see below) Jesse is recorded in both Smith and Cherokee Counties, which,
were already formed by 1846.  We surmise that the Cherokee Co Census taker strayed
north a bit and re-counted Jesse's family.  We suspect they are living on the border area between
the two counties.  In 1870 Jesse's 1st cousin, David P. White, son of BF White, was living in
Polk County TX, however, by 1880, DP White is living in Cherokee County TX, Prec. #4,
beat #4, where Jesse was recorded in 1870.   I would bet Jesse and DP were so close to each
other, they got together and had there own Sacred Harp convention at each others home places.

The 1880 Census was a surprise, to find L. R. White living with Jesse and family. The age
matches perfectly with his brother Lewis (Louis) R. White, Lewis was dismissed in 1858 from
the Cedar Springs Baptist in Spartanburg SC, he is listed in the 1880 census as a Cotton Buyer.
In 1860 and 1870, Louis R White is found in Richmond County GA, he is married to a Sarah
E, in 1870, obviously, she has died by 1880. Louis is not found in Richmond Co after 1870.
Jesse and Louis had family in Richmond Co GA, their sister Susan White Rhodes, and Aunt
Mary White Rhodes, along with numerous first cousins. Brother Warren White also lived in
Richmond Co GA a time before moving to Bartow Co GA.

SC Bible Records shows Jesse T and born 27 May 1821, Jesse's grave stone verifies
the birth date, 27 May 1821.

From the book "White Spirituals in the Southern Uplands"
by George Pullen Jackson, he writes: (page79)

"Jesse Tom White or J T White as is mentioned as the Nephew of BF White, and contributed
to the songs in the Sacred Harp Book, and also appears in other sacred hard books written years
after BF White's, it is to be remembered that BF White lived with his older Brother Robert Jr, who
was also a music clerk and tutored BF.  In the book he is listed as J T White, I got the Tom from
page 79 of Mr Jackson's book."

1842 - 1846 ??
Did Jesse move with Uncle BF White to GA, in 1842?
The reason I speculate on this, Jesse wrote several songs
for BF's, book "Sacred Harp, published 1844, and the
Dismissal date at Cedar Springs is in the range the BF is
                                         known to have left SC.

Titus County Texas
Burial Place of Jesse T & Penelope White:

Titus County is located in northeastern Texas, one county removed from the state's northern boundary and two counties removed from the state's eastern boundary. Mount Pleasant, the county seat and the county's largest town, is located sixty miles southwest of Texarkana and 105 miles northeast of Dallas. The center of the county lies at approximately 33°14' north latitude and 94°57' west longitude. Two major highways, U.S. Highway 67 and U.S. Highway 30, cross the county from east to west. U.S. Highway 271 crosses the county from north to south. The county is also crossed by two railroads, the St. Louis Southwestern and the Texas Utilities. Titus County comprises 412 square miles of the East Texas timberlands, an area that is heavily forested with a great variety of softwoods and hardwoods, especially pine, cypress, and oak.

History of the Masonic Cemetery - Titus Co TX

Located in the Northwest part of the city of Mt. Pleasant, the Masonic cemetery has provided the burial needs for the city and county since 1888. It was started then by Thompson Morris and wife giving 5 acres to the Masonic Lodge to be used for cemetery purposes. The original deed states “The citizens of Mt. Pleasant concluded in a mass meeting that the Old Mt. Pleasant Cemetery is in such condition that the dead buried there is in such irregular manner that it is impossible to put the Cemetery in such condition as becomes Christian people---have selected a tract of land for a New Cemetery to be used for the burial of White People ONLY to be known as the Masonic Cemetery.”

Records show that those interred in the old Christian Cemetery were reinterred in the Masonic Cemetery and the Christian Cemetery closed. No trace of the Christian cemetery now exists.

All the lots in the Masonic Cemetery have been sold and currently there are no plans for expansion.

During the course of this inventory, the following anomalies were encountered: there were 6 unreadable funeral home markers (FHM); a marker that was found on the Lazarus plot which has only “Rose” engraved on it; a marker found on the Pittman plot that has “Selina” engraved on it; 4 small granite stones that say Bryan, Onie & Otis, Martha, Baby; 3 native stones, a marker that has only “Ann Margaret Sep 1812 1927; 2 broken and missing monuments; 4 concrete encased graves with no identification; a petrified wood marker; a monument base with the monument missing; a footstone with the inscription T. W. P. but no monument; and a brick vault with no identifying information.

To reach the Masonic Cemetery from the Titus County court house take Jefferson Avenue north for 0.6 mile to the intersection with West 12th Street. Turn left onto West 12th Street and proceed about 0.3 mile to the intersection from the right with Branch Street. Turn right onto Branch street. The entrance to the cemetery is about 0.1 mile. Coordinates: 33o 10.035' 094o 58.440'.

Due to the size of the Masonic Cemetery I have broken the listing into several pages for faster loading time.  Please click on the alphabet letter for the surname you are looking for.

Researcher's Notes

Notes from Robert Vaughn:
rl_vaughn@yahoo.com

While continuing my research on Sacred Harp in East
Texas, I have found some tidbits of information on a
"J. T. White" of Smith County, which appears to be the
nephew of B. F. White. It is possible, I suppose, that
it could be someone else of the same name. Thought I'd
pass it along to you. All of these references, except
one, come from a genealogical/historical periodical
called "Chronicles of Smith County, Texas". Here they
are in chronological order:

Volume 2, No. 1, p. 12, Spring 1963 - in a record of
the Tyler Business Directory for 1882 there is a "J.
T. White" who is a notary public.

Volume 3, No. 2, p. 17, Fall 1964 - gives information
about the Carmel Baptist Church (somewhere northwest
of Lindale). In 1859 a "Jesse T. White" was recognized
as a deacon. For 1863, it says "R. B. Hubbard, W. P.
Allen and J. T. White are the deacons of the church at
the present." A "Caroline P. White" is listed as a
member in 1863.

Volume 15, No. 1, p. 27, Summer 1976 - gives records
from the Cherokee Baptist Association from 1876, while
meeting with the First Baptist Church in Tyler. In the
list of members of the Executive Board is a "J. T. White".

That J. T. White was "recognized" as a deacon probably
means he had already been ordained a deacon by another
church previously, and that the Carmel Church was
recognizing that fact. If this is the same J. T. White,
then it appears maybe he settled north of Tyler and later
moved into Tyler.

Also from "Some Biographies of Old Settlers, Vol. I",
by Sid S. Johnson, Tyler, Texas, comes the following.
When the Tyler Baptist Church (which was organized in 1848)
was chartered in 1882, a "J. T. White" is listed on the application
for charter as one of the trustees [which would be consistent with
being a deacon, I think]. Thought you might find this interesting.
Have a great week. Robert Vaughn

Notes from Audrey Poole:

Sun, 9 Dec 2001

Virgil "Tillman" POOL was the father of Harold O. POOL, s/o Thomas Jefferson POOL and Mary Elizabeth WHITE, d/o Jesse T. WHITE. I guess I am now wondering in V. T. POOL was named for Tillman WHITE...?

While going over the Bible record and notes from Harold this evening, I see that most of these family members were school teachers. None of the notes say Jesse's family went to AL, but to MS, then TX.

"Notes for Jesse T. WHITE and Caroline (Penelope) ETHRIDGE
(The following information obtained from *F. E. POOL and Family Bible in his possession) *This is Franklin Edgar POOL and uncle of Harold O. POOL. Lindale, TX city park is named for Uncle Frank, and it is so beautiful there! Have you been to that part of TX? (aep)

J. T. WHITE was born May 27, 1821, born in Spartenburg (sic), SC
Caroline ETHRIDGE, his wife, was born June 28, 1829, born in Mississippi, in or near a town called Kosciusko.

J. T. WHITE moved from South Carolina to Mississippi, where he married Caroline ETHRIDGE. J. T. WHITE was a school teacher, as was his wife Caroline. During the Civil War he ran a flour mill near Lindale, TX. He later moved to Tyler and owned and operated the Commercial Hotel and later the City Hotel there

His children were as follows:
1. Mary Elizabeth WHITE, who married Thomas Jefferson POOL (*)
2. Susan (Elaine I think, but not in Bible) WHITE, who married Henry POOL
3. Mattie WHITE, who married Tom STAPLES
4. Dosia, who married a Mr. ARNOLD
5. Josie WHITE, who married a Mr COX
6. Ella WHITE, who married a Mr. BLACK

He had a son, Bud WHITE, who died in 1925 in Waxahachie, Texas. Bud WHITE was a school teacher until he retired.
[Note from Mike White: There was a Uriah or Urich who may be Bud? see census]

The above named daughters all taught school prior to their marriages.

J. T. WHITE died in Mt Pleasant, Texas, at the home of his daughter Ella on July 28, 1894.

Caroline (ETHERIDGE) WHITE died in Mt Pleasant on December 26, 1903.

Note from Harold: I understand that Ivy SHOTWELL, of Center, Texas, who is a daughter of Dosia WHITE, has a great deal of information regarding the WHITES.

Notes from Jim Peterson:

---------------

Jim Writes about a Gibbs family of Burnswick NC, this lineage from which his wife
Sandy is related to, could have connections, to our South Caroline Gibbs family, remember that Elias White's ,(uncle of Jesse T), wife was Anne Gibbs, the daughter of Zachariah Gibbs, and so on... It is worthy to note these connections.  the Gibbs family dates back to the earliest day of our ancestry.  Jim also talks of the Gause family connection. When the White's arrived in 1836, Houston Co, the Gibbs from Union Co SC were also in the area, in Walker Co TX, formed from parts of Houston Co TX.

---------------

By Jim Peterson

One of Sandy's other relatives was the Gause family.  They settled in
both Brunswick, NC and Craven County SC (the current Horry, SC) area.
The most famous nearby town is now Myrtle Beach, SC.  Gause' Landing is
on the mainland side of the current Ocean Isle Beach, Brunswick Cty, NC
just north of Myrtle Beach.  Other places the Gause family lived
included Marion, SC.

Charles Gause (Sandy's 6g) settled in the Town Creek, Brunswick Cty, NC
area and had a child Mary Gause who married William Gibbs - possibly the
child of a Charles Gibbs who was from England and died in Haywood
County, TN.  The lack of family member names prior to the 1850 census
makes it difficult to determine if this Charles Gibbs is related.

However, another fairly reliable source has indicated that William Gibbs
may have been the son of John Gibbs and Sarah Robertson.  I have been
unable to document which is the correct lineage.  Since Charles and John
are used in both families, I cannot determine using that method.

William Gibbs' son John Gibbs married a woman Margaret M (either Mary or
Massey) Fitzgerald who was from Wilmington, Hanover Cty, NC. Margaret
traces back to Ireland in the 1500s thru her father, and to Scotland
(royalty no less) thru her mother.

John and Margaret Gibbs' daughter (Magdalene Walker Gibbs- born in NC
in 1817) married a Rev William C Payne (his parents are unknown).  They
settled with John and Margaret Gibbs in Yalobusha Cty, MS.  John and
Margaret's son (Julius Gause Gibbs- born in Paris, TN in 1822) married
Mary Temperance Pulliam (parents from Granville NC-northern NC).  They
also followed John Gibbs and Margaret from NC to TN to Yalobusha, MS.

The Payne's had a girl named Margaret Fitzgerald Payne who married Rev
George P Richardson (who traces back to Pasquotank Cty, NC).  Their
daughter was May Vernon White.

The Gibbs had a girl named Margaret Elizabeth Gibbs who married Dr.
Jabez Melville Smith.  Their son was Frank Pulliam Smith who married May
Vernon White (second cousins/once removed).

The Smith family also traces back to British royalty thru maternal lines
of the Jeffreys to the Cotten family and also the Duke family (Sandy's
connection to the Dukes is long before the James B Duke (5th cousin/5
removed) of Duke University made his fortune in tobacco).

The point is, if you have Gibbs in SC and I have Gibbs in Brunswick, NC
- that is only 25 miles from the Horry Cty, (then Craven Cty), SC
border.  I am back into the 1750-1770 birth date with either Charles
Gibbs or John Gibbs/Sarah Robertson.
Jim

Notes about Jesse & Caroline
by Jim Peterson

I also noticed that Audrey Poole placed Caroline Penelope Ethridge's
birth near Kosciusko, MS.  Kosciusko is in Attala County.  The next county
east is Winston Co. (county seat Louisville) where Jesse and Carolyn made there
home by 1849 when Uriah was born.  Yazoo Co. (where they got married) is just
SW of Attala County.

Finally, I noted the confusion whether Jesse lived in Georgia, or went
directly west from SC.  In looking at the census data, some of his
children say father was from SC, some say GA.  So even his children were
not sure.  I would speculate that he spent some brief time in Georgia -
he talked about it - and some of the kids picked up on the "fact" he was
from Georgia.  Or perhaps not...

WINSTON COUNTY, MS: Property Deeds from 1835 - 1940
(selected entries, 838 deeds): Listed Alphabetically by Grantor

Deeds compiled and transcribed by Mary K. Johnson, Look4Whittens@yahoo.com,
September 1999, revised September 2002.

Compiler's note: When I transcribed these deed entries, I recorded only those names that might have been relevant to the family lines which I am researching. Some grantors and grantees are listed at "Not Transcribed". This was a time-saving measure for me at the time, and I now regret the omission. However, I have listed the address for the Chancery Clerk below in case someone desires to look up the actual deed for further information. Please note that Deed Book T has been stolen from the courthouse, and some trust deed books are housed in the basement vault.
