Many Thanks and Appreciation goes
to Mrs. Lauren Scott Mallory for
assisting in solving the many mysteries
surrounding our Calvin White.

Much appreciation to Marilyn Hobbs,
a descendant of Thomas W White,
for providing information on Thomas's
lineage.

Special Thank You, to James "Jim" and Pamela Brock
for providing information on the Children of Calvin
White, especially, Thomas W White and his children,
and other children of Robert White Jr., and the greater
White family of Robert White Sr.

Let's recognize Jeanie Russell for her diligent pursuit of
a DAR for Robert White Sr, and for providing much infor-
mation, on the descendants of Thomas W White. We are
hoping the DAR is approved in 2017, it would be the first...

Note from Mike:

Descendants of Calvin thought his oldest son's name was Jepe
however, in the old writings, 's' looked like 'p', 1900 census
makes it clear it was Jessy, as they spelled it, of course this is
Robert (Robin-Bob) Jessy [Jessie] White, probably named after
Calvin A White's, brother, uncle Jesse T White.

Calvin A White died in 1908, we find son J R White in 1910 below

Notes from Mike:
There is a William J Davidson married to a Fannie next door to Jesse R,
probably his daughter, on the other side of Jesse is a Norman Howard and
John W Barnett, which may be involved in this family.

Of course no sign of Calvin A (decd) , or 2nd wife Fannie, she was much
younger that Calvin and may have moved to be near relatives, we have
no information on Fannie. We know now that Calvin's legacy continued
in the area he was born, for many years after...

Notes from Mike White:
The minutes from 1866 to 1910, I assume are missing, as Furman
University only had the tapes from 1834 to 1866 and 1910 onward...

Note we do not see Calvin A White from part of 1861 to 1865, I
believe he is away, possibly serving in the Confederacy.  Calvin
lost two brothers, in this war, Charles H White, killed at Sharpsburg,
and John Willis White, killed on Morris Island SC. In addition to
numerous cousins and nephews and other relations.

Where Calvin & Martha were between 1850 and 1860 is a mystery at
this time, I would believe it might be at her parents former church, prior
to Holly Springs.

 Civil War Service of

Calvin A. White (CSA)

Co. F - 13th South Carolina Infantry Regiment

"The Southern Cross of Honor"

  Civil War Records

Name:                 Calvin A White
Rank:                  Private
Company:           F
Unit/Regiment:   13 South Carolina Infantry
Enlisted at:         Spartanburg Court House, August 27, 1861
Officer:               Capt W. P.  Compton
On Last Roll:     November / December 1864

Notes:
It appears Calvin had been injured or wounded and/or sick.
The Company Muster Rolls indicate he was absent & sick
and on Detached duty or Furlough, some of the time between
1861 and 1864.   He is accounted for from Aug 1861 to Oct
of 1864.

Notes:
This is the same Unit Calvin's brother John Willis White joined.
The time frame is perfect, compared to the Church Minutes, Calvin's last
Church record is July 1861, he joins in August of 1861, we do not see Calvin
in the church minutes again until July 1865, keeping in mind that Calvin was a
Deacon and active in church affairs, would have appeared often.

Calvin's brothers, John W was killed in this war, Charles H White also
served listed as killed in action, he is found in 1870/80 living next to his
brother Warren (Thomas) White in Bartow Co GA.  Many soldiers were
listed as killed in action, but were either wounded and captured and later
released, some deserted.  Many soldiers merely went home, when it was
clear the war was lost, and listed killed and deserted...

Only 7 members of Calvin's company were at the surrender at Appomattox
when the war came to an end.   However, a look at this units military history
will reveal the reason, for so few men left, at the end...

      In response to a call from President Davis, about the 1st of July, 1861, a large number of infantry companies, from all quarters of South Carolina, rendevoused at Columbia, South Carolina. Here they were placed in a camp of instruction, at Lightwoodknot Springs, about five miles from Columbia, and allowed to arrange themselves in regiments of ten companies and elect field-officers. The second regiment so formed was numbered as the Thirteenth South Carolina volunteers, and elected the following officers;

        Edwards, O. E., Colonel
        Calhoun, P. L., Colonel
        Farrow, T. Stobo, Major

After a period of about three months' instruction at Lightwoodknot Springs, it was ordered to the southern coast of South Carolina, it was ordered to the southern coast of South Carolina, near Pocotaligo, where it was brigaded with the Twelfth and Fourteenth regiments, as before stated.

In the autumn of 1861 they were ordered to the coast where they served until April 1862 when they were ordered to Virginia to serve in the Army of Northern Virginia for the remainder of the war. During that time they were in Maxcy Gregg's Brigade until he was killed at Fredericksburg. Then Samuel McGowan was placed in command of the brigade where the name changed to McGowan's Brigade.

The 13th Regiment remained a part of the army of northern Virginia until the conclusion of the war. The 13th Regiment was present at the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. Captain John Wilson Carlisle of Company C later recalled General Custer of the Federal Army passing in front of the 13th waving a white flag as it was getting ready to go into engagement.

Of the 13th Regiment, 220 men were killed in battle or died of wounds.  262 died of disease and 678 men received wounds in combat.

The Story of Company ' F 's Unit Flag

In the summer of 1861, Dr. W.P. Compton organized "the Pacolet Volunteers," a company of men from the banks of the North and South Pacolet Rivers in the Campobello area of northern Spartanburg county.  Dr. Compton was a family doctor in the area and ran a general store on present day Compton's Bridge Road near Walnut Hill Baptist church.

James W. Lawrence, Sr. writes in "Hogback Country," the following:

"When Dr. Compton recruited his Pacolet Volunteers in 1861, and the group was departing for Columbia, the ladies of the community presented the men with a beautiful, handmade, silk flag.  Upon the adoption of a battle flag by the Confederacy, this flag obviously could not be used.  It was stored in the Spartanburg County Courthouse vault for safe keeping during the war.

Early in 1865, the federal calvary moved to Spartanburg, and a soldier by the name of Cahahan carried off the banner to Patterson, N.Y. and presented it to his sister, Miss Cahalan.  In 1894 she made inquiries through the press for representatives of the Pacolet Volunteers.

B.B. Chapman who had served with Dr. Compton as Lieutenant in Company F, 13th Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers, noticed the inquiry and answered it.  Mr. Chapman recovered the banner in October of 1894, paying $5.00 for it, and according to the last account, it is still in possession of his family."

At some point, the Company flag was given to the Confederate Relic Room of the State of South Carolina, where it is currently housed.  It is a silk flag and hand painted.  Currently, the flag is not in the best of conditions but with effort, the State can preserve it for future generations.
