BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES FOR ISAAC
By Betty Barrow

Isaac Pearson Murphy wrote two lengthy letters giving the genealogy of this Murphy family which has proven to be invaluable over the years.

Isaac P Murphy and his sister, Sylvia K Murphy lived together after the war 'spoiled' her money and she lost her parents estate, until he died. From letters written by Isaac P Murphy, in his latter years, he seemed to suffer from arthritis as he said if he "stirred" around in the cold, I soon get full of cricks and ketches" and "my limbs from my hips down being weak and easily tired, and of late seem to have gone into a settled soreness". In 1876, he was weighting 197 lbs. but still tending to the farm, raising crops of cotton, wheat and oats. In a letter written by Jason Wiley Murphy in 1879, he stated that "both I. P. and Sister Silva was up but both feeble and Isaac can't see much, having to put up with work as he can get it." In a letter written for Isaac in April 1883, he stated that "I don't pretend to walk without my stick even across the floor." Isaac P Murphy was blind the last four years of his life we are told by Mr. Richard Dewey Murphy, age 87 of Union Co., S. C. (1996).

Isaac P. Murphy was the Administrator of his father, Sion Murphy's estate in 1845. He purchased several articles including "a lot of books and a slate." He seemed to be the one the others turned to for advice.

Information taken from Isaac P Murphy's letters; Union County Heritage 1981; History of Padgett's Creek Church; Bible records; census records; letters from Isaac P Murphy and Jason Wiley Murphy owned by Vickie Devlin, Norcross, GA.

"The man who saved Rome Georgia"
Civil War

John Henry WISDOM. Born on June 10, 1820 in Green County, Georgia.1
John Henry died in Hokes Bluff, Etowah County, Alabama after 1882, he
was 61.

John Henry Wisdom, son of Jesse Wisdom, was born in Green County,
Georgia, June 10, 1820. He lived in that state until just before the
Civil War, when he moved to Gadsden, Alabama. Here he ran a ferry
across the Coosa River. During the war he carried the United States
mail between Alabama and Rome, Georgia, by means of a private
conveyance. He married Susenann Silvey, daughter of Robert Dukes and
Mary White Gilliam, April 24, 1843. Susenann joined the Baptist Church
at Ennon, Floyd County, Georgia, August 29, 1845. In December, 1846,
John Henry was converted to the Christian faith and joined the Ennon
Baptish Church. In March, 1882, he moved with his family to Hokes
Bluff, Alabama, where he now resides on his farm. Four score years and
nine have passed since the birth of this prominent figure. He is the
father of nine children, seven girls and two boys.1

John Henry Wisdom became a legendary hero during the Civil War.
"Southern Historical Papers, Vol. XXXVII," p. 372 titles the story,
"Wisdom's Famous Ride."

     A story written by J.M. Robertson 27 April 1906
Copied from, "Genealogy of the Wisdom Family," by George W. Wisdom,
A few days after the battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi, ended on 4 July
1863 Federal troops destroyed John Wisdom's ferry across the Coosa
River. On John Henry's return from Rome, Georgia, he discovered this
and questioned the troops. The scouts confided in John that there were
4 Regiments of Federal troops consisting of the 51st and 73rd Indiana,
18th Illinois, and 3rd Ohio Infantry enroute to Rome, Georgia to capture
the garrison left there to protect the citizens of Rome.

John Henry Wisdom having been in business so long both in Rome and
Gadsden, 65 miles apart, and along the public roads both north and south
of the Coosa River, was well-known in both places and throughout the
country.

He traveled the 65 miles in 7 ½ hours using 6 horses and 1 mule that
farmers provided for him along the way. Almost all of his journey was
at night but he arrived 18 hours before the first Federal Scouts. This
warning gave the Confederate forces sufficient time to establish a trap
of the entire force of Federal troops.

Although John Henry Wisdom probably didn't know it at the time, Colonel
Dew Moore Wisdom, a staff officer of General Nathan B. Forrest of the
13th Tennessee Calvary was at Rome and participated in this surprise
capture of Federal troops. I don't know if they knew each other.

Colonel Dew Wisdom was a son of William Sargent Wisdom of Tennessee and
a grandson of James Wisdom.

After the incident the citizens held a great celebration for the CSA
troops. John Henry Wisdom was officially proclaimed the, "Savior of
Rome" and was "presented with a substantial purse and a handsome costly
gift of silver service."

In the campaign memoir papers of General Forrest of October 1, 1867 he
added a foot note on page 270 ... "Mr. John H. Wisdom of Gadsden,
Alabama however had previously hastened on the errand that gave the
people of Rome the first warning of the coming danger for which the
people of Rome richly rewarded him."

John Henry Wisdom was 43 years old when this happened in 1863.

On September 25, 1843 when John Henry was 23, he married Suse Ann Silvy
GILLIAM, daughter of Robert Dukes GILLIAM & Mary White SILVY, in Floyd
County, Georgia.1 Born on November 15, 1825. Suse Ann Silvy died in
Hokes Bluff, Etowah County, Alabama on August 1, 1900, she was 74.1

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES FOR SYLVIA:

By Betty Barrow

Sylvia K. Murphy never married. She had lived with her brother, Isaac P Murphy, since, as it was put in
a letter from Susyann Delilah Bailey, "Sister Silvy wanted an interest in the home place but he (Isaac P Murphy)
thought it best for her to have it in money and lone it out and get interest but the war come and spoiled our money
and she lost her parents estate and she had been there with him (Isaac P.) waiting on him ever since father died
therefore he (Isaac P.) thought proper to treat her different from the rest of us. (re: Isaac P. estate) . When Brother
Isaac died sister Silvy chose to go to Brother (Jason) Wiley's. She left a will for you (Edy) to have 50 dollars, sister
Polly 50 dollars, Brother Hiram 50 dollars, Brother Jepthah 50 dollars and the balance equally divided between myself
(Susyann Bailey) and Brother Wiley and told the reason why because she could see us and enjoy our company." In most
of the letters written by Isaac P. and Susyann Bailey to Edy Jackson, they spoke of Sylvia's afflictions.  In a letter of
24 July 1870 Nancy W. Murphy (Jason Wiley's wife) wrote that "Isaac and Silva is doing tolerably well. I. P. carries on
his own farm, has freed folks to do the work. Silva does her own cooking, a freed woman does her washing and milking.
" Isaac wrote in a letter of 27 May 1872 that "Sister Sylvia complains of her back being effected with something like cricks
occasionally but she keeps going attending to her chickens and been doing her own cooking when the wood and water is brought
to her but she appears to look older and older and her hearing more and more deficient. IN his letter of 24 Feb. 1875, he states,
"Sister Silvy says she is never clear of suffering entirely, always complaining of soreness in her system generally and particularly
her hands and arms and feet and legs and has been complaining for some days, from cold and suffering more that usual from misery
between her shoulders and cough with asthmatic symptoms, but she is up doing all day at something of other."

In the letter of March 1879, Jason Wiley and Nancy Newton Murphy writes, "Brother I. P. and Sister Silva is up both feeble, Isaac
can't see much, has to put up with his work as he can get it, the same freed folks lives with him. Sister Silva has spells of something
like gravel. Dr. says she ruptured, it is a pressure on the neck of the bladder, looks like she can't live at times. She don't have anyone
in the house to do for her, the negroes come and waits on her when she can't do."

Sylvia K. Murphy died 4 Aug. 1886.
She  had a talent for poetry.
See poem following:

By Silva Murphy - 1833

1. I want to read my title clear
To mantions in the skies;
To bid farewell to every fear,
And wipe my weeping eyes.

2. By faith to view my pardon seal'd,
Through thy atoning blood;
To feel thy love in me reveal'd
And trust thy Gracious Word.

3. Help me they promises to claim,
To me thy Grace afford'
By faith to see my sins all slain.
While leaning on my Lord.

4. Should Earth against my soul engage,
To bring on grief & thrall;
Help me to stand against her wrage,
and trust in Christ my Lord all.

5. While thus secur'd by Grace divine,
Help me my cross to bear;
Oh may I be by purchase thine,
And Thou the Glory wear.

Miss Silvy Murphy

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES FOR HIRAM:
By Betty Barrow

Hiram Byrd (Bird) Murphy came to Georgia between 1850 and 1860. Hiram B Murphy
sold his 209 acres of land in Union County SC to Charles Barnett on 8 July 1853 and
purchased 160 acres (Lots 256 & 285 in the 14th District 2nd section of Cherokee Co GA)
for $500.00 from Joseph A Mathis on 20 September 1854 Deed recorded 7 February 1856.
He also purchased from Andrew Riggins on 2 Oct 1854 for $275.00, 130 acres, land lot 257
in the 14th District 2nd section.

On 20 Dec. 1878, H. B. Murphy sold to Pierson L. Worley (his son in law) part of land lot
285 containing 56 acres more or less but reserving 8 acres including saw mill and dam and
east part of pond.

The 1860 Cherokee Co., Census list Hiram B. Murphy in the P. O. Sharptop, Shakerag Township.
Page 739, Dwelling 566, Family #594. As a farmer, with 1800 property value/349 personal property
value. Born in SC.

According to his tombstone, he was a member of the Baptist church for 55 years and a deacon of the same.

Hiram B. Murphy and his wife, Elizabeth were members of Chalcedonia Baptist Church (before 1875)
Hwy 5, Cherokee Co GA.

They were both dismissed by letter (no date given). Hiram B Murphy served as a deacon of
Chalcedonia Baptist Church.

Both Hiram and Elizabeth are buried at Sharp Mountain Baptist Church, Cherokee Co GA.

Hiram B Murphy must have been a man of strong morals as he did not mind bringing other church members
before the church, as he is found doing so in the minutes of Chalcedonia Church.

He must have been an outspoken person; in a letter from Jason Wiley Murphy to Edy Jackson he says,
'Remember us all to Brother Hiram and family, tell them to write to us. I would love to see his handwriting
and hear him express his mind once more. "

He was also very trustworthy as seen in the following:
Shoal Creek Baptist Church  --  State of Georgia
Lot No. 278 13th Dist 2nd Section Cherokee Co.
In view of the resolving of the Baptist.
Church of Christ at Shoal Creek, We have
rested the parcel or lot of land belonging
to shoal Creek Church in the hands of Wm.
     B. Daniel and Hiram B. Murphy and in case
of their death of removal then it to fall
into the hands of the Deacons of the
nearest Baptist Church of our faith and
order and their successors in office to be
reserved for a Church yard and Burying
place of our faith and order. It being
Seven acres of Lot No. 278 in the 13th
     & 2 section.             W. W. Worley, Mdr.
                                     H. B. Murphy, Clerk
     Recorded July 15th 1860
               O. W. Putnam, Clerk

Hiram B. Murphy was named a legatee in the Estate of Isaac P. Murphy.

Hiram B. Murphy lived in Cherokee Co GA near Murphy's creek, where he farmed. It is said to
have had a mill on the property at one time and in the 1880 Cherokee Co GA census, at the age of
72, it showed Hiram B. Murphy, attending mill.

Battle of Cedar Creek Virginia

American Civil War
October 19, 1864

At dawn, October 19, 1864, the Confederate Army of the Valley under Lt. Gen. Jubal A. Early surprised the Federal army at Cedar Creek and routed the VIII and XIX Army Corps.  Commander Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan arrived from Winchester to rally his troops, and, in the afternoon, launched a crushing counterattack, which recovered the battlefield. Sheridan's victory at Cedar Creek broke the back of the Confederate army in the Shenandoah Valley. Lincoln rode the momentum of Sheridan's victories in the Valley and Sherman's successes in Georgia to re-election.

Result(s): Union victory

Location: Frederick County, Shenandoah County and Warren County

Campaign: Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign (August-December 1864)

Padgett's Creek Baptist Church Union Co SC

January 19th 1895 - Rev L. C. Ezell restores  Bro. Jason Murphy to his
membership at the Padgett's Crk Baptist Church.  Nancy is deceased at this time.

Rev. Ezell had this to say about the old dispute his church had against
Jason, "The Pastor remarked that he could see no reason to revive the old
matters of fifty years, since that Bro. Murphy had lived an irreproachable
life, and now wished to be restored, & he is an old man; let him be restored.
Upon motion his application was granted & Bro. J. W. Murphy restored."

During the remaining years of his life Jason W. Murphy was a devoted
church member until he died, in October 1899, in the 88th year of his age.

Jason wrote his sister about this unfortunate situation, you could tell by
his words, this troubled him for many years, he found his peace... And
he and Nancy now rest in the Cemetery of the church Jason's was raised,
and the cemetery where Nancy's grandfather lay, and their roots began.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES FOR JASON:

By Betty Barrow

According to the History of Padgett's Creek Church Book, Jason Wiley Murphy
served in the War between the North and South.  Also according to the same book,
J. W. Murphy was active in the Church, serving on the building committee set up in
1844. In the month of August, Jason Wiley Murphy was elected deacon of Padgett's
Creek Church and was ordained four months later. During the next 3 years, he was
very active on committees and also being a delegate to the association. In 1845, the
church voted to disapprove of some of the acts of the last Association; however,
Jason Wiley and T. M. Murphy said they would not submit to the action of the Church.
After waiting 30 days for them to change minds, which they did not, they were excluded
from the church membership. 50 years later, on 19 January 1895, after a strong sermon
was preached and the usual invitation given for the reception of members, Jason Wiley Murphy
presented himself for restoration.
SEE THE STORY BELOW.

Another moving experience in the life of Jason Wiley Murphy written about in the Padgett Creek
History book is:  Hiram Wilburn, 87 years old, feeble and tottering on the arms of stronger man,
came during an invitation and related that he was converted 40 years ago but had neglected his duty
in making a profession of religion and uniting with the church. Adding to this solemn, moving experience,
Bro. Wiley Murphy, who was nearly the same age as Mr. Wilburn, approached his old friend and neighbor
and now brother in the church and fell upon his neck, embracing him and weeping for joy.

Jason was a farmer, working very hard putting in crops of 'Cotton, Peas, Corn, Wheat and Nancy Newton Murphy
wrote quite regularly to Edy Jackson and Hiram B Murphy after they moved to Georgia, keeping them abreast of
the happenings around the connections of Union County, S.C.

JASON WILEY MURPHY

Reunited with the Padgett's Creek Baptist Church
The church from which he was ordained a deacon
The Church of his childhood

This is the Story of his Excommunication from this Church in 1844

In the month of August 1844. J. W. Murphy and Carlton Ray were elected deacons of Padgett's Creek Church, both being ordained four months later. During the next three years, J. W. Murphy had an active part in the affairs of the church, being appointed to serve on various committees and delegated to attend the Bethel Association. In the year 1844, when the Church decided to build a new Meeting-house, he, along with Carlton Ray, John Norman, Thomas Ray and Ambrose Ray were named for the committee to make plans and estimate the probably cost for building a new church.

On April 19, 1845, the Church in conference, voted to disapprove of some of the acts of the last Association; however, two members of the Church namely, J. W. Murphy and T. M. Murphy, said they would not submit to the action of the Church. The church delayed making a decision, for a period of thirty days, to see if these members would reconsider and agree to the action; then after learning from them that they stood as before, the Church by a vote finally excluded them from membership.

Nearly fifty years later the following is recorded in the Minutes of the Padgett's Creek Church:

"Saturday, January 19th 1895. The Church met at 2 P. M. The pastor, Rev. L. C. Ezell, preached on the test: "Finally my beloved brethren be stron in the Lord and in the power of his might." After the sermon thr usual invitation was given for the reception. Bro. Murphy had been excommunicated from the Church because he objected to & declined to acquiese in the approval of a resolution passed by the Association. The same not being stated nor specified in the records of the Church. The Pastor having had some conversation with the applicant for membership states, that Bro. Murphy had expressed regret for having lived the independant life which he had lived, that he wished his steps to be correct that others might also be led aright. The Pastor also remarked that he could see no reason to revive the old matters of fifty years, since that Bro. Murphy had lived an irreproachable life, and now wished to be restored, & he is an old man; let him be restored. Upon motion his application was granted & Bro. J. W. Murphy was restored."

During the remaining years of his life Jason W. Murphy was a devoted church member until he died, in October 1899, in the 88th year of his age.

Notes:
This problem the the Padgett's is talked about in one of the letters mentioned above, that he wrote to one of his sisters, it must have troubled him for some years, and appears in the end, he made his amends.

Jason's wife, our Nancy N White was deceased by 1895, she was the daughter of Robert White Jr.  Both Jason & Nancy are buried at the Padgett's Creek Cemetery adjacent to the church.

In a paper dated 2 Nov 1887, J. M. Murphy of the county of Fayette, State of GA., "but now temporarily in the County of Cherokee said State" authorizes Joshua P. Spears to go to Union County S.C. to receive, receipt for me and in my name to receive the monies due him from the estate of his deceased brother Isaac P. Murphy late of Union Co SC and also empowers him to look after and to take such steps as he thinks best and proper in regard to his interest in the estate of his aunt Sylvia K. Murphy late of Union Co SC. This was witnessed by P. L. Worley and H. W. Newman with James L. Jordan C. S. Court.

In a letter (Vicki Devlin's letter's) from Jason Wiley and Nancy Newton Murphy to Mrs. E. D. Jackson written July 24, 1870...he states that "they would love to hear from Brother Jephathah how he getting on"...

Another letter of Vicki Devlin's from J. W. & N. N. Murphy dated March 17, 18 (date left off) from Union County S.C. to Edy Jackson in Cherokee Co GA., says " We got a letter from Brother Jephthah a few weeks since Nancy has gone or is going to the Mormons."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This company became Company G, upon reorganization in 1862.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This company left Camp Young near Savannah, Georgia for Wilmington, North Carolina December 14, 1862, and arrived there December 19, 1862.

This company was organized in Fayette County, Georgia August 1861. Was mustered into service at Camp Bailey, near Fairburn, Georgia, as State Troops and went from there to Griswoldville, Georgia, from whence they were ordered to Savannah, and were in General Wilson's Brigade. At the end of twelve months the company was reorganized. We were ordered to Wilmington, North Carolina, where we did coast duty, and from thence were ordered back to Savannah, Georgia In June 1863 we went to west Mississippi and were in all the skirmishes around Jackson. From there we went to Chattanooga, Tennessee We engaged in the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia September 19-23, 1863, and in the campaign back to Chattanooga and Missionary Ridge. Went into winter quarters at Dalton, Georgia When we left Dalton we were under fire of the enemy practically all of the time day and night. Were in battles from Dalton to Lovejoy Station, Hightower River, Resaca, Calhoun, Pine Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, Atlanta, and Jonesboro We went from Jonesboro to Dalton, had a little skirmish with the with the enemy, then crossed the Tennessee River and went to Franklin, Tennessee, where we engaged in battle, then went to Nashville, where practically all of the company was captured.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES FOR SUSYANN:

By Betty Barrow

Susyann Delilah Murphy - They are buried at New Prospect Baptist Church in Union Co SC. The Epitaph on Johnathan N. Bailey's tombstone reads:  "The deceased was a consistent member of the Baptist Church for 37 years. He was a good citizen, kind, just and an affectionate father." The epitaph on Susyann Deliliah Bailey's tombstone reads: "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord."

The last lived in Sedalia Union Co SC.

According to a write-up in the 1981 Union County Heritage Book, in the write-up on the Wiley Estes family, says that in May 1898, Delilah went upstairs to get some apples for friends. She fell down the stairs and broke her hip. Two months later, July 8 1898, she died and was buried beside her husband, Jonathan Bailey, in Prospect Cemetery about a mile from her home in Sedalia.

Jason Wiley and Nancy N. Murphy writes in their letter of 24 July 1870, "J. F. (Jessie Franklin Bailey) is farming this years on his Fathers river place, has been overflowed all the spring. Keeps planting over, he said he can't make a great deel of corn. He comes here for his home. He staid with Chaney's (his brother in law) all the spring while at work until the last of June his Father (Jonathan N Bailey) died, then he staid with his mother (Susan Deliliah) of a night. Mary (Murphy, Chaney's wife) staid with us her health was bad.  J.N.B. (Jonathan N Bailey) was sick a long time, he put himself under the care of a physician in February, gradually grew worse until June when he was so low they called in a assistance physician. On Saturday morning, he went to sleep. They could not wake him. The Drs wakened him by using the battery. He never was at himself much of the time after that but lived until the next Thursday. He died the last day of June was buried 1st July. His disease was complicated, liver, heart & brain."

In a letter written by Jason Wiley and Nancy N. Murphy in March 1879, they state, "Delilah is staying with Franklin Bailey, has good health for an old lady."

=========

Jonathan N. Bailey

...was received by confession of faith at New Prospect Baptist Church September 27, 1849 and was an active member until his death, he is buried at the New Prospect Cemetery, his Epitaph is erected to his grave. "The deceased was a consistent member of the Baptist Church for 37 years. He was  a good citizen kind, just,  and an affectionate father."  Susyann D Bailey was also buried at Prospect Cemetery. They resided in the Sedalia-Cross Keys section of Union County.

David's probable Burial Place:

David died in Staunton Augusta Co VA, the location of the largest Confederate General Hospital during the war. Most all of the wounded and sick CSA soldiers who died at this facility were buried at
Thornrose Cemetery, in Staunton VA. It is almost certain that David is among the many unknown soldiers buried in the Confederate Soldiers section, at this cemetery.

Staunton Virginia avoided much of the battles itself, however, in early June 1862, it came under a major Union attack, though the Confederates were successful in repulsing this attack, many were killed and wounded, it is possible that David took part in this battle, as he died later that same month in Staunton.

His death is recorded in a couple of books:
Union County Heritage SC 1981, Page 17.
Broken Fortunes 1995, Page 14.
