A Family Story - 'The Death of William 'Billy' Nettles'

William "Billy" L. Nettles was a law enforcement officer, family legend calls
him a Town Constable, in Redwater, TX . Billy died as result of a bullet wound.

At a WHITE Family reunion in Texarkana in the mid eighties, an elderly
Collins relative related this story, as told by his father.

"Billy Nettles was called to a disturbance in a local saloon where his friend the
postmaster, possibly named Mosher, was drunk and disorderly, firing his pistol
in the air. Billy approached him, relieved him of his weapon and told him "to go
home". The man went home and later secured another weapon. He rode by horse-
back to the home of Billy Nettles and shouted for him to come out on the porch.
Billy stepped outside and was shot and killed."

This story is similar to the one his daughter, Emma Nettles Kelly, told her
children and grandchildren.

This writer tried to obtain an official record of Billy Nettles' murder from Courthouse
records.  Unfortunately, the records that would have answered the questions regarding
any official action taken against the killer were destroyed by fire.

Billy died at the young age of 38, leaving his wife Margarit with six children, age
sixteen and under.

Margarit died four years later and the two eldest children, Johnny and Emma,
struggled to keep the family together. In 1901 when Emma married she took younger
brother, Eugene, and sister, Bessie, into her new home.

It's easy to understand Emma Nettles Kelly's great dislike for "liker". She was at home
when her father was killed and always associated his death with the use of alcohol.

Mrs Pat Boone

Notes from Mike White:

From Bowie County Postmaster records, the Postmaster of Ingersoll (later Redwater),
was Giles T Moser, May 5, 1890, however, he was also the Postmaster of Redwater,
Mar 13, 1903. Thus, if the reference above to Mosher the postmaster, in 1892, is true,
It doesn't appear he was jailed for the matter, or, was released, or it was someone else.
The Bowie Co Court house was destroyed by fire in 1889, so, this case may be on file,
as the William's death came in 1892. (remember the paragraph above is from 'Family Lore')

[William's death is remembered on several web sites, honoring fallen sheriff's and police officers]

NETTLES CREEK - Redwater Bowie Co TX

Was driving on US Hwy 67 through Redwater Bowie Co TX, and saw a bridge crossing, named "NETTLES CREEK", and wondered which Nettles this could have been named after, went directly to the Texarkana Main Library, and couldn't find anything, and neither could the Librarian. I emailed Glenn Thrapp, of Redwater, as he is very knowledgeable about the Redwater area: This is what he had to say:

"Hi Mike,

On the subject of Nettles Creek, you went to the wrong place for information. The second road east of Nettles Creek is CR.1214, 1 mile north is where the Thrapps live. That's where information is kept. The public library is useless. Pat Boone in Houston would be your source for Nettles information. Not sure how the names were selected for the 2 creeks just east of Redwater. Nettles Creek begins in Elliott Lake & the other creek is named Elliott.

The Whites owned land from west of Redwater High School to Cr. Rd. 1214."

 Obituary

"R. T. Kelly, one of Jonesboro's leading business men, died Friday morning at 5 o'clock at a
sanitarium in New Orleans after an illness of several weeks. The sudden illness and taking of Mr.
Kelly was a great shock to his many friends. He was one of the best liked and highly esteemed
men in our city.

Mr. Kelly came to Jonesboro 18 years ago, and for a time held a responsible position with the
Tremont Lumber Co., and later engaging in the mercantile business. His genial spirit being
proverbial among all with whom he came in contact. As a citizen, he was ever progressive and
lert to the best interest of the community.

Mr. Kelly was taken ill about five weeks ago, and went to New Orleans where he was under the
care of specialists. A brave fight was made to restore his health, but science could not cope with
nature, and on Wednesday the attending physicians wired Mrs. Kelly, who had returned home a
few days before when seemingly Mr. Kelly was much improved, that Mr. Kelly would not survive
but a few hours. Mrs. Kelly motored to Alexandria to catch a train, so that no time would be lost in
reaching his bedside, and was with him until the end came.

Services were held at the First Baptist Church at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon, Rev. A. N. Murray
officiating, after which interment was made in the Jonesboro Cemetery.

The services were largely attended, attesting the popularity of the deceased, and his grave was
covered with numerous floral offerings, the final tribute of a host of friends. In addition to his
widow, the deceased is survived by seven children: Mrs. Jimmie Whatley, Trout, LA., Mrs. Myrtle
Long, Joyce, AL., Mrs. Ila Mae Rockhold, Alexandria, and Robert, Willis, Mildred and Rufus Kelly.
One brother, R. F. Kelly, Monroe Ga., and Mrs. Sadie Queen, of Monroe, Ga.

 About Mr. Robert Kelley

Mr. Kelly was fifty-eight years old, born in Monroe, Ga., where he spent his boyhood days. His
father was a Confederate soldier, and was killed in the battle of Seven Pines, Va., and his mother
joined him in the Great Beyond, a few years later.

Everyone in the community has been touched with grief at the passing of Mr. Kelly, and every
heart goes out in sympathy to the grief stricken family."
~ ~

R. T. Kelly was diagnosed with pernicious anemia. After his first blood transfusion he responded
but died after the second. Family members speculate that his blood type may have been A
negative. Three known children and several grandchildren and great grandchildren share this
blood type. His illness was not considered leukemia, however two of children with this rare blood
type developed leukemia.

Regarding Robert's actual age, he was 60 years of age when he died, not 58. His father, James R.
Kelly, died in May 1864 and Robert was born in September of that year. Census records and
Confederate service data confirm that this was the year of his birth. Please note that James was
AWOL in January and February, 1864.

Daughter Mildred Holliday said, "When Papa first met Momma he told her that he was a 34 year
old widower with a small daughter. Perhaps he thought she would think he was too old if she knew
his correct age. So I guess he had to stick with his story." Son Rufus Kelly agreed with family
members that both his father's known age and tombstone birth date were incorrect.

"Reprint from Jackson Parish Louisiana Historical Book, published date unknown."

"R T. Kelly and wife Emma, with three children, Jimmie, Myrtle and Ila Mae settled in Jonesboro,
Louisiana in March 1906, coming to this town from Redwater, Texas.

He was employed by the Tremont Lumber Company in the Planer Mill Department. After the mill
ceased operation in 1915, Bob and Jim W. Hammett and Lynn Atkins established a general
mercantile store where is now the Key Note Cafe. Later the firm became known as Atkins, Kelly
and Poole, after J. E. Poole, brought Mr. Hammett's interest in the Store.

In 1920, the property where the Popular Price Store and the Wholesale Automotive Parts is now
located, was bought from John Templeton, and the store became know as Kelly and Atkins. At
that time the Livery Stable was located next door, where Gatlin-McDonald Chevrolet Company is
now located.

He remained in business until his death in November 1924, at which time he was survived by is
wife Emma, and seven children, Mrs. Jimmie Whatley of Trout, Louisiana, Mrs. J. C. Long of
Joyce, Louisiana, Mrs. Homer Rockhold of Alexandria, Louisiana, Robert, Willis, Mrs. Mildred

Co. D - 44th Alabama Infantry Regiment

"The Southern Cross of Honor"

CIVIL WAR

Fourth Alabama
Infantry Regiment

This regiment was organized at Dalton, Georgia, May 2, 1861, and proceeded at once to Virginia. Mustered into service for twelve months at Lynchburg, May 7, it proceeded to Harper's Ferry. It soon after fell back to Winchester, where it became part of Gen. B. E. Bee's Brigade - of which the 2nd and 11th Mississippi, 1st Tennessee, and 6th North Carolina were the other regiments. Moved to Manassas Junction, the regiment took a prominent part in that conflict, losing 38 killed and 208 wounded out of a total of about 750 engaged. Gen. Bee, killed at Manassas, was succeeded by Gen. W.H.C. Whiting.

The Fourth wintered at Dumfries, re-enlisted for three years in January 1862, re-organized in April, and about that time moved over to the vicinity of Norfolk. It was engaged both days at Seven Pines, losing 8 killed and 19 wounded. A fortnight later, the brigade was sent to the Valley, but came back with Jackson's corps a few days after. It was hotly engaged at Cold Harbor, losing 22 killed and 108 wounded out of 500 present; and lost slightly at Malvern Hill. Moving northward with the army, the Fourth participated at the second Manassas, losing 20 killed, and 43 wounded.

At Boonsboro the loss was slight, and at Sharpsburg 8 were killed, and 36 wounded. After this campaign Gen. Law was assigned to the permanent command of the brigade which was shortly after organized with the Fourth, Fifteenth, Forty-fourth, Forty-seventh, and Forty-eight Alabama regiments as its complement. The Fourth was engaged at Fredericksburg, losing 5 killed, and 17 wounded.

It lost slightly in the brilliant fight at Suffolk, and soon after took up the line of march for Maryland. It passed into Pennsylvania, and was engaged in the assault at Gettysburg, with a loss of 15 killed, and 72 wounded and missing. In the fall the Fourth moved with Longstreet's corps, and took part at Chicamauga, with a loss of 14 killed, and 54 wounded out of about 3000 engaged. It moved with the corps into east Tennessee, and in the attack on Knoxville lost 5 killed, and 24 wounded. Rejoining the army in Virginia, the Fourth was hotly engaged, and lost 15 killed, and 58 wounded at the battle of the Wilderness out of about 250 engaged, and 4 killed and 11 wounded at Spottsylvania.

It took part in all the operations to the second Cold Harbor, where its loss was slight. Then, for nearly ten months, it lay behind the defences of Petersbrug, taking part in the various movements and assaults, losing 10 killed, and 30 wounded during the time. It surrendered 202 men at Appomattox, Gen. Perry of Macon having been in command of the brigade for nearly a year.

Of 1422 men on its rolls, about 240 perished in battle, nearly 100 died of disease, and 408 were discharged or transferred.
