Obituary: Delphine Young Christopher:
Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Advocate, The (Baton Rouge, LA) - Sunday, May 2, 2004
Deceased Name: CHRISTOPHER, DELPHINE YOUNG

Delphine Young Christopher, 77, died peacefully Thursday afternoon, April 29, 2004, at her home with her husband Robert W. Christopher. She was born in Shreveport and spent a large portion of her life in the Shreveport area, although she spent many years in Baton Rouge, Houston and her last 20 years in New Roads. She is survived by her son, Mel Bellar and his wife, Peggy Bellar of New York City; her husband, Robert W. Christopher of New Roads; and her stepson, Robert Neil Christopher of Houston. She was the valedictorian of her class at Benton High in 1944 and received a full scholarship to go to college, but chose to support our World War II effort as a Rosie the Riveter instead. She had a sharp mind for numbers and for many years worked as an accountant at the LSU bursar's office. She was an avid bowler and bridge player in her earlier years. She will mostly be remembered for her kind heart as demonstrated toward her love of her family and her love of animals, which she had a tendency to spoil in excess. There will be a graveside service at the Roselawn Memorial Park in Baton Rouge at 2 p.m. Monday, May 3, 2004. In lieu flowers, donations can be made in her name to the American Cancer Society or the Pointe Coupee Hospice.

In his position there as director of research and development, he helped plan wastewater disposal procedures at Disney World and in China, and was instrumental in founding the Center of Energy Studies at LSU. In recognition of his achievements, LSU named him "Outstanding Alumnus of 1984." He is survived by a son, Robert Neil Christopher, of Houston; the light of his life, his granddaughter, Casey; brother, Dr. James L. Christopher and wife Dianne, of New Roads; and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his father, U.S. Army Col. Warren Neil Christopher; mother, Dorothy Converse Christopher; stepmother, Mary Munson Christopher; brother, U.S. Marine Col. Willard Christopher and wife Charlotte; sister, Dorothy Ruth Young and husband U.S. Army Gen. Charles M. Young; and wives, Nellie Marie Thomas Christopher and Delphine Young Christopher. Services will be held at United Methodist Church, LeJeune Street, New Roads, on Friday, Jan. 7. Visitation with family will be from 9 a.m. until memorial service at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Jeremy Jones officiating. Masonic rites will be under the direction of Ray Mosher. Maurice Babin will direct American Legion tributes.
