Co. A - 20th Alabama Infantry Regiment

"The Southern Cross of Honor"

20th AL Inf. Regt. Flag

Story of the Unit Thomas, Stephen and John
served in during the Civil War:

20th Alabama Infantry Regiment

The 20th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Montgomery, with recruits from Bibb, Dallas, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Perry, Russell, Tuscaloosa, and Washington counties, on 16 September 1861.

Proceeding to Mobile in November and to Knoxville in February 1862, the regiment was placed under Gen'l Danville Leadbetter of Mobile. Transferred to Gen'l Seth M. Barton's Brigade, the 20th operated for some time in east Tennessee and advanced into Kentucky with Gen'l Kirby Smith, being in Gen'l Alexander Reynolds' Brigade, Henry Heth's Division.

It was in the pursuit of Union Gen'l Joshua W. Sill along the Salt River and joined Gen'l Braxton Bragg just after the Battle of Perryville. The regiment was in Col. T. H. Taylor's Brigade for a short time, but shortly after the return to Tennessee, a brigade of Alabamians was organized, the 20th, 23rd, 30th, 31st, and 46th regiments, and placed under Gen'l Edward D. Tracy of Madison, and in Carter Stevenson's Division.

A few days prior to the Battle of Murfreesboro, the division was sent to Vicksburg, and the regiment fought at Port Gibson the following spring, losing heavily in casualties. At Baker's Creek it again suffered severely, and was then at Vicksburg. During the siege there, the ranks of the 20th were greatly thinned, and it was surrendered with the fortress.

After the fall of Gen'l Tracy at Port Gibson, Gen'l Stephen D. Lee of South Carolina commanded the brigade, until Gen'l Edmund Pettus of Dallas was placed over it in the parole camp at Demopolis.

Ordered to join Gen'l Bragg, the 20th participated in the battle of Missionary Ridge without loss.

The winter was passed at Dalton, and the regiment was engaged in the constant fighting from Dalton to Atlanta, being conspicuous at Rocky Face Ridge, and losing heavily at Kennesaw.

It participated at Jonesboro, suffering severely. It moved into Tennessee with Gen'l John Bell Hood, and lost heavily at Nashville.

From that field, the 20th passed into North Carolina and fought at Kinston and Bentonville. It was surrendered at Salisbury, about 165 rank and file of the original 1100 men with which the 20th took the field.

At the close of the war, the 20th was consolidated with the 30th Infantry Regiment at Smithfield, 9 April 1865.

Notes for John J Letcher:

Comment on Industrial Accident that took John J Letcher's life:

To the best of my knowledge we don't know if he moved there or was working
construction there in a ship yard. I think he suffocated in the accident.

Hi Mike,
You have the same Letchers I have found. I have found somewhere that Emma
Virginia was a Garner. I also think that John J. married again after Emma's
death...

Mike and all,

I have found my notes and John J. was in Chilton County from 1880 till 1910. In 1920 Grover was in Shelby County. I guess I had forgotten about Chilton?   John J. had a second wife by 1900 and it says they had been married for 8 years. Her name was Susan W. "Susie", I don't know her maiden name.  In 1880 Thomas G. was in beat 8 and John J. was in beat 7. Someone ask me if I had found the 10 son's of John J.?? I have each census and I can only find 6 sons. The 1900 census was bad, some pages looked completely blank it was so dim. I feel lucky to have been able to make out John's family. Also, the hand writing wasn't very easy to read either. One name I transcribed as Robert, I later decided must have been "Tolbert"! A son on the 1880 listed as William (R or B) must have been Richard who is on the 1900 and 1910 as Richard the same age as William so it must be "R". Richard is married to Laura and on the 1900 have one daughter, Jetter in 1900, Jettie in 1910, b. Sept. 1898.

(Note from Mike:  Richard was the son of Thomas G Letcher son named Jetter)

Lucy Jane Letcher

Sandra Knight writes:

Here is a picture of three of Grover and Lucy Letcher's children. Must be made before the last one was born? John is the youngest standing between Irene and "Brown" or Julian, that must be his nickname as it is on several of the pictures. John has kind of long hair, I thought it was a girl at first, but Chris said it was "granddaddy". But this picture was probably made during the time of Buster Brown haircuts, etc.??

Back - Charles, Julian
Front  - Lucy (mom), John & Irene

Back Side to Picture at Left

Sandra Knight Writes:

This is not a good snapshot, but it does have Miss Lucy and all her children.   The back says: Uncle Charles, Uncle Julian (Brown), John (Dad), Aunt Irene, Miss Lucy (Grandmother).  But they are not in that order.  I know that is John in front with the suit and Charles is the one in service

Note:
Above, Sandra is referring to an another identical picture, not shown here, but this will help in identifying those in the photo, at left.
