Family Story

Life & Times of Thomas & Marthia and Family

Provided by: Janet "Jan" Ward
From Interview with Sister Betty Paul Mabe
Great granddaughter's of Thomas & Marthia

UP^

Thomas M White was tall and Marthia was 6 ft in stocking feet. She had
very hard labor with the twins. Thomas placed her on a pallet on the floor and went to get the doctor.

When they got back and walked through the door Marthia told them "don't step on any of them". The doctor replied 'Oh, Lee, you'll never be serious'. She laughed at that.

In the early 1930's she fell and broke her hip. They tried to set it but couldn't. Therefore, she was on crutches the remainder of her life. Betty said that her leg hung free as she no longer had control of it.

She was dark headed in early life. Had beautiful blue eyes and snow white hair in later years.

Our granddad, Charles T White was a farmer all of his life and died in 1965. He was 6 ft tall. They lived a short time near Old Boston and a year or so at Sand Hill before moving to Maud.

Uncle Rex & Uncle Leo were probably 5'11". Not quite as tall as all of the others.

Uncle Gus was a farmer. His daughter Lizzie Mae and Clyde Fisher moved to Nash and bought a store. They added onto it and built a house behind the store. After Gus retired from farming, he moved to Nash and would help out in the store located Hwy 82, Nash, Tx.

Uncle Rex was in business with cousin, Perry White. They had the General Store in Maud that had everything in a country store, groceries, tools, piece goods, farm implements, etc. Aunt Ilie worked for Rex for years before they married and tended to the piece goods and women's stuff.

Mr Glass and wife Edna owned the drug store which had a soda fountain. Betty and the girls spent a lot of time their because the boys were soda jerks.

Mr Arnold owned a store which had the post office at the back. It was off Hwy 8 to the south.

Mr. Chandler owned the Ice Cream Parlor.

The Maud Methodist History Book

Entire Family, Children and Spouses were all named in a book, "The History of Maud United Methodist Church 1874-1974, Written by Joe V Clouse, Pastor and P. E. Cooley.  The book describes each of Thomas's children and there spouses and children, and displays the Thomas White Family Picture that we've have on this web page.

Maud Methodist book says Martha moved to Bowie Co 1868 at the age of Sixteen. And that Thomas and Martha were married 1875 at Corley Bowie Co TX, after there marriage attended the Maud Methodist Church, as long as they were alive.

In September 1876, Martha and Thomas M. White bought a farm about 3 miles from the present town of Maud. The farm home is still in the family. This is where nine of their ten children were born and reared. Marion Augusta was two months old when they moved to their new home. A number of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren reside in Maud at the present time. Several of them are members of the Maud United Methodist Church.

1879 Partial Map Bowie Co Texas

Thomas's 54 acres of land in the Saml Proctor HRS, Saml is a heir to Nathan Proctor,
this is where Benjamin White, Thomas's father, bought 320 acres, and thus, the 54
acres was Thomas's Inheritance from Ben's estate, and the 100 acres in Thomas's
J  S Herring HRS, is land Thomas inherited from Elias White's estate, it
appears he sold these 2 lands, and purchased 135 acres in the John B
Downey HRS, south of old Boston, and in the small town of Corley,
very close to Maud Texas.
