Information and photo provided by: Janet Ward

The original picture was faded to almost all white. The sign on top side reads "John Read's Hack'". Story is that he would meet the lawyers from Texarkana at the train station in New Boston and take them to the Bowie County Court House in New Boston.

1900 Census shows Mr Read's occupation as 'Hack Driver'
He transported many of the Texarkana Lawyers to and from
the train station to Bowie County Court House in New Boston.

What is known about this Harris Family?

John Calvin Harris, was the son of Charles Thomas & Mary (Ramsey)  Harris, Charles & son John C were born in Charlotte VA, and then moved to Botetourt Co VA, and then Lee Co Va, where Charles & Mary lived until their deaths.  It is said, and my reserach is still young, that Charles Harris descends from the Harris line of Rockbridge VA.  It is further speculated the Charles Harris's parents were Joseph Harris I, and Joanne Almond, and that Joseph's father was Charles Harris II and wife Ann Hazelwood.  At this time none of this verified by myself.  Census records at this time are my main source, and the closeness, in which they lived to each other... John Calvin Harris's second marriage record shows his parents as: C & Mary Harris, I believe this is Charles & Mary Harris, John's parents.  I hope to find a Will or Estate, that will show John Calvin Harris as a son or heir.

Charles Harris is living in Charlotte in 1830, and in 1840 he was now living in Botetourt Co VA, north east of Charlotte.  John Calvin Harris appears on the Census in Botetourt Co VA, in 1850/60, it appears some of his siblings had left that county, some to Montgomery Co VA, and some to Lee Co VA.  By 1870, the family appears to have reassembled in Lee Co.  John C's 1st wife Mary died in Feb. 1861 in Lee Co, so John's family had to have arrived just after the 1860 census.  John C remarried to Elizabeth Edsall, of Lee Co, in Oct of 1861.

Lee Co VA was in the very south west tip of VA, the last county before leaving the State.  John's father Charles Harris died 1 Apr 1872, his mother, Mary Jane Ramsey Harris, lived until 7 Dec 1879, and also died in Lee Co VA, at this time I do not know where they are buried.

It is my opinion that John C Harris left Lee Co VA, shortly after his fathers death, as John C & Elizabeth's son Lewis, was born in Bowie Co TX Nov 1873.   Would have had to leave between Apr 1872 and arrive in Bowie Co prior to Nov 1873.

These Harris's are seen on the rolls of the Maud Methodist Church in Bowie Co TX, and on County census and Tax records.  When the devastating 'Twister' hit Maud in 1914 completely destroying the town and churches, Son Leroy is on several list of contributors to the reconstruction of his town, apparently, god loving folks, involved in their communities.

There is a story, I am trying to confirm, that 'John & Elizabeth left Lee Co VA in a two horse buggy, all the way to Texas'... Am told this may be in the Lee Co Heritage Book, will update when I find it.  In reality, with so many children, I suspect a Wagon or two went with them, however, the 'Iron Horse' called the Railroad may have played a factor in that travel west, during this period.

John C Harris's family was quite large, 16 children total.  The where-abouts of the children is not known at this time, son Leroy Fulton Harris appears frequently in Bowie Co records, but is the only one, my reserach into this line is young, someday I may be able to assemble the family and figure out what happened to some of the children.  What is apparent, they did not, all, stay in Bowie Co TX.

The Bowie Co Probate Clerk did not find a Will or Estate for John C or Wife, Elizabeth.  Nor did they find one for Thomas Monroe White, but did find a Will/Estate for Marthia O, Thomas's wife.  It will take someone visiting the Bowie Co court or library to take a personal look to completely rule out the existence of these records.

Several of the children from John's first marriage, did not come to Texas, initially, they were grown and went their separate ways. Newton & Milton R Harris are living at home in Bowie Co TX, in 1880, Marthia of course was married to Thomas White.  That would leave Charles L, Mary and Elizabeth unaccounted for, they may also be in Bowie or remained in VA.  Most were to young to fight in the Civil War, so I believe they survived to carry on their family history in different parts of the country.

Notes:
It is possible our Harris's were in this area before they
appeared in Charlotte Co VA, the best I can estimate,
is Charles & John had moved from Charlotte to Botetourt
between 1830 & 1840, and remained there at least to 1861.
Then moved to Lee County VA. They may have retained
property in Botetourt and sold it while they were in Lee Co.
It is possible some of the children remained on this property,
after some of the family had departed.

Map 1

Maps below show J C Harris's 100 acres land within
the John Downey Headright survey (HRS). South of
Big Creek, where the Harris Cemetery is located.

Approximate location of John C Harris's 200 acres,
south of the Langham or Big Creek, in Bowie Co,
within the Jacob H Collom headright survey,

Also note, that J C, owned land
within the John Downey HRS,  John Kittrell, &
C Joiner, these last 2 may have been within one
of the said headright surveys mentioned. See the
poll tax records above for years between these lands.

J C's land is off the first county road leaving Maud going west. Turn right off
of 67, proceed north until the main CR turns west, continue straight for approx 1
mile until this road turns east. Our gate entrance is here on the left. The cemetary
is across a power line and northwest of the gate about one half a mile from the gate.
Big Creek runs across the northeast side of this 114 acres, which we call the
Seals Place.
(Appraisal office has JC's land location in the J B Downey HRS as A-148, on 1998 Map)

Company F(1), Captain S. Ratliff's Company, was formerly Company F(2) of the 21st. This company disbanded in January 1863, after which many enlisted in the 10th Kentucky Mounted Rifles (Diamond's) or in Company B, 22nd Virginia. The only commander of this company was Sparrel Ratliff.

64th Virginia Infantry
Roster

The 64th Virginia Mounted Infantry Regiment and its precursor unit, the 21st Virginia Infantry Battalion, were recruited in the autumn of 1861 in Lee, Scott, Wise and Buchanan counties, on the Kentucky frontier. The men jealously guarded their right to remain in their home area as a solemn promise, throughout the war, even while the infant Confederate States crumbled around them.

The 64th Virginia Infantry was formally created on December 14, 1862, by the consolidation of the 21st and 29th Battalions of Virginia Infantry. The Regiment was reorganized September 1, 1863 at Cumberland Gap and became known as the 64th Virginia Cavalry.

General Humphrey Marshall wrote to Adjutant and Inspector General Samuel Cooper on December 14, 1862, from Abingdon, Virginia.

I forward the muster in Rolls of Captain M. V. Kilbourne's Co. H, Capt. Sparel Ratcliff's Co. F, Capt. Geo. N. Tyler's Co. K, Capt. Wm. F. Webb's Co. C, Capt. Harvey Gray's Co. E, Capt. Wm. W. Wynn's Co. G, Capt. Joshua E. Hobbs Co. A, Wm. R. Boles Co. B, Capt. Lexington M. Day's Co. D. Five of the first lettered of these companies formerly composed the 21st Battalion Va. Vols. commanded by Lt. Col. Slemp. By Order of Sec. of War I consolidated this battalion with a battalion organized in Lee & Scott Counties by Mr. Saml. Salyers. Thereby forming a full Regiment, all Muster Rolls of which are herewith transmitted except one muster roll which was sent back to the Regiment for the Captain's signature. This Regiment will now have to be numbered as a new Virginia Regiment laying aside its battalion number (21). The muster rolls of the old Battalion's companies have of course been returned heretofore but I thought it would be preferred that all should be forwarded at the time the regimental organization was completed.

The Commissioned are asked for: Campbell Slemp as Colonel, A. L. Pridemore as Lieut. Colonel, Jas. B. Richmond as Major, Geo. R. Johnson as Adjutant, H. C. Slemp is already Asst. Qr. Master, John Riddle as Commissary, C. C. Johnston as Surgeon (now Assistant), Wm. W. Morgrave as Assistant Surgeon

John's unit has been remembered in VA History
in the following book:

" 64th Virginia Infantry, by Jeffrey C. Weaver "

======================================

John's unit and Roster is listed in this book, it is no
longer in print, but copies can easily be found on the
internet.   It talks of the unit and area and terrain and
will enlighten you in the process.  The writter places you
in the times, and you get a feel for the people, the suffering
and agony that the war caused.   It appears the 64th had it
own agenda, the area neither favoring the Federals or Confederacy,
These were Mountain folks, living in conditions compared to the
1760's, still frontier folks.  The fact Lee Co VA had KY to the West
and North, and TN to the West and South, created unique problems
for the folks in Lee Co and surrounding counties...

Researcher LHM - writes the following on the 64th:

"I have found some info on the unit of the 64th VA. mounted infantry.

They were organized as a unit sometime in December of 1862.   They occupied Knoxville, VA at that time.   Their commander was Colonel Campbell Slemp .   The unit was mounted and probably had no more than 600 men.

Usually in their situation and the locality of the war in east Tennessee, it was better for these men to be on horses than on foot.  There was a scarcity of men in the remote area of Lee Co. for the south at that time.   Most were fighting on the fronts of Richmond or defending the rail lines between Richmond and Atlanta.

From my readings upon the capture at Cumberland Gap this happened most likely on Nov. 23, 1863.  The men were under the command of Lt. Col. Auburn Pridemore.
They were ambushed at Cumberland Gap by some Union men in the country.
He lost over half of his men.   Most likely this was what the Harris brothers were related to.

Upon this encounter , it would take near the end of the year before the south was able to protect Lee County and control it.   They did so at the battle of Jonesville on Feb. 22, 1864.
but they would never able to take Cumberland Gap.

From what I have found, the purpose of the 64Th VA. was to protect the salt works at Saltville,VA.  By controlling Lee Co. they would hold the western approach to S W Virginia.

So far this was all I am able to come up with as of now.
My source is coming from a book that I am reading called CONTESTED BORDERLAND by Brian B. McKnight.

I will look into the VA records on the unit and see if there is a roster of the men who were in this unit.

As I was saying, this unit was not formed until December of 1862.
This was after the battle of Perryville in KY that was fought in Oct. 1862, so my hunch is this unit was used for defensive purposes along the KY, VA, TN border.

It was vital to keep the rail lines in east Tenn. protected.   The borders had to be secured.
What made it  so bad was that east Tenn. was mostly pro-Union. "

64th Virginia Infantry

Roster of Unit
May be other relatives - future reference

Field and Staff Officers were:

Campbell Slemp, Colonel
Auburn L. Pridemore, Lieutenant Colonel/Colonel
James B. Richmond, Major/Lieutenant Colonel
Harvey E. Gray, Captain/Major

Company A, Captain Joshua E. Hobbs' Company, was formerly Company A of the 21st Battalion Virginia Infantry. The only company commander was Joshua E. Hobbs.

Company B, Captain William R. Boles' Company, was formerly Company B, of the 21st. Company commanders were Captain William R. Boles and Captain Benjamin F. Poteet.

Company C, Captain William S. Webb's Company, was formerly Company C(2) of the 21st. Commanding officers were Captain William S. Webb, Captain William A. Falin, and Captain Hiram Demosthenese Pridemore.

Company D, Captain Lexington D. Day's Company, was formerly Company D(2) of the 21st. The company commander was Captain Lexington D. Day.

Company E, Captain Harvey Gray's Company, was formerly Company E(2) of the 21st, first commanded by Gray and then by Captain Martin B. Fugate. Fugate's Company was enhanced on March 1, 1865 in Scott County by the enlistment of members of the 13th Battalion Virginia Reserves.

Company H, Captain Ira Creech's Company, was formerly Company A of the 29th Battalion. Creech was the only company commander.

Company G, Captain William W. Wynn's Company was formerly Company B of the 29th Battalion Virginia Infantry. Some members of this regiment had served in the 94th Virginia Militia. Most of the Company was captured at Cumberland Gap on September 9, 1863.

Company I, Captain William J. Collier's Company was formerly Company C of the 29th Battalion Virginia Infantry. Some of the members of this company served in the 21st Battalion and in the 49th Militia Regiment.

Company K, Captain George N. Tyler's Company was formerly Company E of the 29th Battalion Virginia Infantry. This company was consolidated with Company E of the 29th Battalion to become Company K of the 64th. Most of this company was captured at Cumberland Gap on September 9, 1863.

Captain James Franklin's Company was organized with at least 20 men about March 1, 1865. Many were former members of the Virginia Reserves, according to the caption of events for the company. However, only one man was found to have transferred to this company from the 13th Virginia Reserve Battalion. Others may have been members of the Scott County home guard. These men were among the last to surrender. None surrendered at Cumberland Gap with the rest of the regiment. Many, however, were found to have been paroled in mid-May at various places in the South. Apparently this company was never assigned a letter.

**from a descendants point of view, these men served in other units and battles, the writer above has his own view,
and obviously has little knowledge of the folks or area - remember the 64th was formed from other units, and later
after the capture of most of the unit, the others went on to fight other battles. **

These mountain men in porportion  to other populations, provided more soldieries than other Virginia counties.
These were mountain Farmers, lived in conditions, compared to the 1760's, very indepentant, and a known fact
that they did not get along with City folk soldiers, well documented.

They fought to stay in their home territory, families being so isolated, would have spelled sure death and starvation
for their families.  Most other communities were not in this situation, these men are to be commended for and honored
for their service.  ** there now, this descendant is a bit happier.. **

From a military point of view, the history of the entire regiment hinged on the first nine days of September 1863. The capture of two-thirds of the regiment's effective force at Cumberland Gap was never overcome. The 64th's first regimental commander, Campbell Slemp, was cashiered from service for disobeying orders. Auburn Pridemore and the other field and staff officers, however, were apparently no better at military discipline than Slemp was. In-fighting among the 64th Virginia Mounted Infantry's regimental and brigade officers destroyed a potentially valuable group of soldiers for the Confederacy. The regiment's men finally accepted more far-flung assignments, but it was too late to be of benefit or to redeem their reputation.

The casualties taken in battle were among the lowest of any regiment in the Confederate Army. Despite the lack of shed blood, the regiment suffered a horrendous death rate, mostly at the infamous Union prison at Camp Douglas. The record of the regiment is mixed and so is the commentary. A group of men with no vested economic interest in Southern Independence served, but only served where they could care for the needs of their families.

**from a descendants point of view:   ' I was born and he is the reason I am here today, god-bless them all '....**

**I also note that the Prioson at Camp Douglas Chgo IL, was close in Jun of 1865, our Gr Grandfather was paroled at
Cumberland Gap, I do not believe he was sent to Camp Douglas, at this time.  4,000 Confederates died at this camp.
Those released at the end, had to take oath to the US. May be a record of these...

**Note also that John C and brother Charles Harris were paroled on May 2, 1865, Camp Douglas held their prisoners
until June of 1865.   If anything, John eluded capture at Cumberland with the 3rd that escaped....

**Note also that John C is listed as PRESENT on the rolls of 30 Jun 1864, am sure he was not captured.
